  • Here is the third tree in the 2D tree series - drawn by hand by me.
This is an animation created using a drawing program that I wrote in Processing. The audio was handled by SuperCollider. The program records the drawing of the large pixels so that they may be played back later and that is what you see in this video. There are seven different colours with seven different corresponding tones. The tree is reconstructed exactly in the order that I drew it. This is the same drawing program that I used to recreate the embroidery drawings for the Ukraine project (robgillthings.net/projects/uk...)
This is generative art based on a fairly simple formula: draw a tree structure with the originating trunk starting at the bottom middle of the picture plane. No two colours may be adjacent and no branch may touch another branch. All space must be filled up by making sure that every branch extends as close to its neighbours as possible (within one square distance minimum). No small, one square branches may be made in the middle of a branch, only the end (otherwise you end up with a lot of small random ‘buds’ which I omitted for aesthetic reasons).
Trees are an elemental computer graphics form that I like to explore in my artwork along with such other essential forms as pixels, cubes, height fields, and triangle meshes. The tree structure offers a lot to explore. It is an important construct in computer science - there are many different kinds of tree-based searching and sorting algorithms. Below you will find a link to the overall tree project page - I also have a series of 3D trees that I am working on right now. At the time of this writing I have also just completed a very large project called 'High Park Branches' (robgillthings.net/projects-2/....
I am in the process of turning this into an interactive web app that will reside on my website. Visitors will be able to generate their own trees using simple key commands. What you see in the video is the playback of the creation the of the tree and this is the first and most rudimentary form of 'analysis' that I apply to the artwork that I create. I am currently working on animating this structure once it has been built using different systems such as complex systems, cellular automata, and other non-linear systems. This will also be a part of the web app I am working on so this is definitely an ongoing project (much like many other projects that you see videos/animations from on my channel).
This artwork, like most of my other projects, is defined by a particular formula (as described above) which is designed to reveal a certain aspect of psyche. What does the tree structure reveal about our inner domain? That is what this project seeks to investigate. The processes of analysis described above serve to deconstruct the artwork further - observing it in different ways - thereby revealing new information.
