In the special episode of the Exo Colony Devlog series I show you what I was able to achieve in 1 year of unity game development. About me:
My name is Pascal, I'm a Game Developer from Hamburg, Germany. In my free time I work on a crafting and space farming indie game called Exo Colony which is also a top down pixel art game. Exo Colony is inspired by other games like Astroneer, Lumbermill or Littlewood. On this channel I want to document my progress and share the development experience with everyone who is interested in this type of content! Of all the random things I've come across/seen this year - Dog Dating Simulation is def getting the award :D Great work! It's so great to see a dev gain such a large following. Hardwork is always worth it :D
The progress over 1 year is absolutely insane! Congrats on the success so far, can't wait to see where Exo Colony goes😁
The new sprites added quite a lot, also the day/night cycle. Lights adds lots gradients which brakes the solid colors and makes the image rich. You have no shadows during day time. Those are good for selling the idea of a light source. I thought about maybe faking some real time shadows by rotating the shadows, but it needs to be more sophisticated to interact with other objects properly

I've seen some videos of these games but I've never played them. But sure - totally possible that these games also inspired some features, especially the conveyor belts :) Thanks for the kind words!

The great thing about game dev is that code is code, when you learn the fundamentals you can apply them anywhere. The graphics is what really takes the time in my view. edit: wow you only have 4,2k subs your production value is unreal

This looks so fun! I'm a big fan of games like satisfactory or factorio so I can't wait to try it. One thing tho, what is/will be the "end goal"? Would there be anything that the player is working towards?

Absolutely fascinating seeing the progress! I’ve been following the game since the beginning, but seeing the achievements all compressed and sped up like this is super fun.

Something you may want to consider is a wind state, limiting the efficiency of the windmill. This is just a thought because if I can only use solar during the day(which is obvious for real life reasons) but the windmill out put is constant there is no reason to build solar in the game.
Oh there is already a wind state in the game, I did not explain that in the video though :/ I skipped some minor things which are already in the game. Thanks anyways! Hope you enjoyed the video.

Hey! I really liked the game, but I have some constructive critiques to make, I don't know how you want to build the game, but how I see the game a bit too "farm like", chickens, cows, fishing, I think if you could add more alieny or spacy stuff the game would be better, can't wait to see what you will add after this row of polishing, really nice game, can't wait to play!

looks good, BUTi have a big critique:
why would you make an alien game where everything looks like Earth? ground, grass and water color. rocks, ores and trees. even the "alien" animals, are real animals with a slight palette change.
try to make it more alieny and it will have a lot more personality, and can make the game standout in a saturated genre

Add Combat to the Game
I'm new to this game developer stuff so pardon me if this is a dumb question. Aren't you afraid of someone stealing your game idea? Or is your goal not to monetize your game? I mean like if a small developer team were to come by, see what you're doing, and could copy and finish it before you did. That would be my fear for sharing my game idea in progress online.
That's an interesting point. I would say there is a risk, that's for sure. So if the idea is like super unique and never been seen before I would probably be more careful about it. But most "devlog games" you find on UA-cam are not that genre breaking super innovative kind of games which would make sense to steal. Also a lot of them are quite personal to the developer and that's more than often what's charming about them. Also I know that I would have a much harder time to finish a bigger game in my free time when I'm not allowed to show anything to anyone until it's more or less finished. So the devlog and youtube feedback is a big part of what keepts the development rolling. So I'm more than willing to take the risk that someone might steal some of my ideas.

I actually never played Factorio but I get that a lot. From my understanding I have at least some features planed which will differentiate Exo Colony from Factorio.

How did you learn how to code in the beginning? did you do tons of tutorials? did you just go at it and try to make full scale games? I feel pretty stuck myself.
I studied computer science and also code for a living. For Unity I did do a lot of tutorials

Hey Pete - hell yeah, you do! Love your channel and your videos :) You think some of the games art would be up for a critique of yours or is it too basic?
Yeah I see too many features implemented, especially the fishing. It's a game mechanic most games don't even need. Of course trying out what works and what doesn't is a good idea. But implementation is a whole other thing. You could simply make the idea on paper and try to test it out that way first. Try to define what's fun in your game and concentrate around that and the game sometimes designs rest of itself.
