I've been reading the comments on a lot of these master class videos, and I'm getting tired of people bashing the teachers. A master class is designed for the teacher to provide constructive criticism for the student, not ooh and aah about the student. Noah Bendix-Balgley is kind and helpful, with a delightful sense of humor. And yes, obviously the better musician. Ann Yu certainly spent hours practicing her piece to prepare for her audition, while Bendix-Balgley is just walking up and perusing the score without warmup.
The twaddle you read in the comment section sometimes... Goodness.

This guy is great! Anyone who has played a while can see how technically she played it. Instead of stating such he instantly broke down her technique, gave her context, and gave her the tools to make her instrument have a voice and sing!

Exactly right. With respect to Ms. Wu, she seemed to be playing notes with hardly any sense of the line of the melody.

@Ramesses II Setepenre I think she's holding her violin lower and not as upright as he is. A violist tends to hold their instrument lower due to the length, so I think that's why

@@vla179 I had the luck to be conducted by one of their second violinists, Stanley Dodds, and to work with different members from Berlin Philamonics as soloists and it may be true: music is never finished or perfect for them. But what I saw with all of them was that they all care for young musicians and try to teach as good as possible. And to be honest in 14 years of violin lections i never learned as much as in the few orchestra rehearsals with Mr. Dodds. So maybe, its never perfect for them, but they will always encourage and help you to get to your best version.

How should we play it for an orchestra audition: like it is really properly played in the section or rather like a solo?
Because nobody is going to play like a soloist in the section (but perhaps sometimes the concert master). Also, couldnt it be a mistake by the judges to hire a musician to sit in the section who cannot play well those delicated soft passages but is more used to play full blown (like everybody is ordered to play all the time)?

The titles are a little different. A “principal” or “concertmaster” is what in America we’d call an associate or assistant principal. The actual “principals” as we would think of them have “First” before their title, so First Principal Cello or First Concertmaster. (Some German orchestras instead give them a “solo” title.)
In addition, in most sections there is also more than one First Principal. Most sections have two, and there are three First Concertmasters.
