Visiting an Extinct Track: Atlantic City Race Course

  • On the way to my family vacation, I stopped by Atlantic City Race Course, which closed in 2014. This once storied track still stands, although it has been run down and the racetrack has overgrown with plants. Nonetheless, it was still a cool experience to see the track still standing and learn the history of a once popular racing venue.

I am from the Philadelphia area and grew up attending the races at all the area racetracks. Delaware Park was where we went every summer weekend. We vacationed every year in South Jersey so we also went to Atlantic City Race Course. In fact at my youngest age was not allowed to go into the track due to New Jersey not allowing children in at the time. My mom my sister and me would picnic along the fence near the paddock where my dad would talk to us between races. Later when I was older I attended the races at Atlantic City regularly. I also went to Garden State Park and Liberty Bell Park in Philadelphia. Like ACRC those two also closed. Casino gambling was the main demise of the two New Jersey tracks, Liberty Bell Park was replaced by Philadelphia Park, now called Parx for thoroughbred racing. Delaware Park and Parx racetrack still are open thanks to both states approving casinos at the track. Horse racing is not as popular today mainly due to all the competition for the gambling dollar: casinos, lottery and now sports betting. So there is little chance ACRC will ever run again unless the state allowed both casino and sports betting at the track. I do miss it as you noted they had a first class turf course and top notch racing in years gone by. The big races still are very popular like the Kentucky Derby and Breeders Cup and set new betting records most years so there still is proof racing is not dead, just less popular on a regular basis.

Went there years ago I remember the trolley that picked people up in the parking lot. I got stung by a big wasp in the truck on the way there. That took care of it at the infirmary. Was a fun time.

went there as a 15 year old in 1962 with a friend of my Grandparents . I knew nothing about horseracing but iI got in because I was a big 15 yr old and bet the Daily Double 3 and 1 and won, wasn't much as I remember - probably the favorites -but a great day and I still remember the crowds screaming as the horses neared the finish line ! Wow ! I wondered why all these people were screaming ! HaHA

Didn't know it at all except one or two mid afternoon cards whereby the off ocean breezes cooled the apron off.

Noble Dancer won the United Nations in 1978, and 1979. I owned a filly out of his last crop. The 1995 Arlington Million was won by Awad ,he was out of a Noble Dancer mare. Awad just got caught at the wire in the 1996 Arlington Million finishing a close 2nd.

Rockingham Park in Salem New Hampshire. I never got to see that track during its heyday. It's been torn down and turned into a mega shopping/residents complex.

I was lucky enough to attend Suffolk Downs in Boston during one their final years. Do you know if there’s any kind of plaque or something commemorating Rockingham in the area? If I’m ever up in that area I’d love to stop by!

If you want to get an old-time deal, you could go to Delaware racetrack it’s not that far away. It’s absolutely amazing. It’s still looks like it did 100 years ago just to be safe check out that they haven’t remodeled before you leave and thank you for the video was terrific

Well done video. I've dealt with many Michigan closings - Detroit Race Course, Hazel Park (both demolished). Saginaw and Sports Creek both still look like ACRC with the abandoned grandstand and trees overgrown on the track surface and infield.

You can add Arlington Park in Chicago. For the second time in its existence, Arlington Park has been closed down. One could theorize that the incredible rise in violent crime led to its closing. (That could also be the reason that the Chicago Bears are leaving as well.) Haven't heard about Sportsman's Park, which is a Standardbred track, so I don't know if its still open.

@@apharoah12 I couldn't find anything on it on Google. But I was there in 2000. It was old and dilapidated and there was an ancient and faded sign that said Davis Downs., but an acquaintance was training his bullet mare. She worked under some kind of sweat sheet and ended up winning 28-50k. for her Dad in a match race. Thanks for the comment. I feel important talking about racing. Haha. Love it.

The only way they could reopen if they put Sports Betting or Slots at that track. There is no reason where NJ is right now we have to be to that level.
