The point is not "are they technically safe", the point is "are they safer than conventional locks". As a software engineer, I always dismissed these "smart" locks. But after watching the Lock Picking Lawyer, I'm not so sure anymore... Perhaps a combination of the two is what's needed to be "Technically safe".
Regardless, nice video! Spreading awareness about these things is important. I was shocked to find out that in order for my LED strip to be turned on by my Google Home, a call is made from the google servers to the (Chinese) LED strip manufacturers website which maintains a wss connection with the LED strip and turns it on. The packages need to be verified by the user, but many users don't know anything about that, obviously. I think a solution on router level is needed to fix this stuff.
And we need to get rid of these smart hubs. There is no reason why we can't have a single point of communication (a google home or Alexa, etc.) instead of dozens of unsecured ones...

All of that is good and all but if the WiFi fails for some reason, you'll be blind and won't be able to view remotely from your phone.

Can't someone just say "(insert smart device wake word here) unlock the door"?
