I just started playing double bass about 9-10 months ago. I started playing electric bass and I have been using regular fingerstyle for both basses. Should I be finger picking like an electric or like jazz upright players do. I mostly play in the jazz style. I can play blues, mixolydian, Lydian, and Dorian scales pretty fast and I have my intonation built up for them. When I do the same on upright I can’t get it as fast as fingerstyle on the electric bass. Again, my short term solution was to use electric bass fingerstyle on upright. What should I do? Thanks😀
We have several right hand technique lessons you can check out in our free lessons library discoverdoublebass.com/lessons-library/ ...but the short answer is that most bassists use 1 or 2 fingers of the right hand with a more 'side on' approach to utilise arm/hand weight and get more flesh on the string when playing slow/medium tempos.....but there comes a point where the tempo requires you to move to two fingers and as the speed increases a more perpendicular angle. In this position you can't use arm/hand weight as well and it's a lot more like electric bass technique...but the distances your fingers are moving are obviously much greater. I noticed that most of your contributors are playing the same bass. I gather this is your personal bass that everyone is sharing? Is it mainly set up for classical music?
Yes, it's often easier for traveling artists to use my bass. The set up is pretty much the same for classical jazz, it's just a case of adjusting the string height using the bridge adjusters and changing strings if requested. The set up Jospeh was using in this video is pretty much identical to the jazz videos John Goldsby shot. Pretty much the same string height and strings (spirocore weich). I think the difference between jazz and classical basses is not that big now. It's really about getting the right strings on a beautifully set up bass which is really playable and has a consistent sound. The rest is up to the player.
