THANK YOU so much Banjo Ben for giving the gust of putting BOTH strap buttons on my beloved bass. I did everything you showed us, plus waxing both screws, and the result is just fantastic. Really proud of believing in you! Play and let play. Cheers, mate!
Good tip about using the hole through the button as the drill guide. Also the tip about positioning the button so it does not foul your hand. Good video thanks
I would never, ever drill a hole into a beautiful guitar. Just put the strap around the tuning box. No big deal. Then if decades later you decide to sell the guitar, or pass it on, generations to come will thank you for your respect.
I hear what you're saying. I went through the same internal debate with myself with my beautiful new Martin D-35. However, the guitar is a tool, an instrument, and having the strap attached above the nut makes the guitar slide all over my shoulder when I'm playing -especially standing up. You have to make the tool work for you. By the same logic, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a used Martin that had a properly installed strap button.
You want to put a piece of tape around the drill bit at the point where you want to stop drilling - a "depth stop" if you will. Drilling too deep is not good.
Have you ever installed strap buttons like that on an electric violin? Looking to install a strap on my electric, so I can strap it behind my back while I perform. Thanks for your video!
It's like the 5th video on strap button installation im watching that doesn't mention the rear end button. At this point i think i'll leave the guitar as it is...
My luthier put mine in a spot I don’t like. I should have done it myself. Any suggestions as if I should drill a second hole or just live with it? It hits the palm of my hand. Thanks
I would set it up the way I want, so I'd drill a 2nd hole. If the first hole bothers you, there are ways to fill it in and I'm sure how-to vids on youtube.
@@BanjoBen I picked up a new strap button yesterday at the music store. It made a huge difference! I wiped the sweat off my head. I think I can live with it and if need be I’ll change it. The new button is a little bit lower profile. Just hurts when it’s an expensive guitar.
My tech installed my parlor guitar strap lock on the back of the heel facing me. And I find that my strap constantly slips off with it in this position. And feels uncomfortable. I wanted the hole on the side as you are demonstrating. Can I get a tech to drill another hole on the side of the heel and remove the first strap lock? Will that little empty hole cause problems if I remove the strap lock that’s facing me?
Would you use the same position for the strap button with an acoustic bass (Stanfor Big Sur Fretless)? I'm a bit unsure about it but would love to upgrade my acoustic bass in that way. Thanks for the video btw :)
Tks , interesting sharing. I allow mysel a somewhat peripherical question ; I have -according to my standards- an expensive guitar (Breedlove circa 1500$), and I don't see myself making a hole in it. There is a button, but quite big, because it's also the jack input. And, there is only really a tiny groove to lay the strap (hope it makes sense, I am French). I think I am going to make bigger the hole of some ordinary strap, but I am not so happy with it. WOuld someone have an idea? Thank you .
I put one of these on my Martin 000-15m and I like it. There are 2 sizes depending on the pickup/jack you have. www.musicnomadcare.com/Products/Acousti-Lok-Standard-Jacks/
Some customers do not want them, so we ask first before we install. Other shops may not install them because it takes time and expertise to do it correctly.
@@BanjoBen great video my dude. Imma try it i ordered some already. In my opinion i think it looks more presetable with the button then on the top. Aye but thats my opinion👍.
@@gary1960 Of course it doesn't hinder your playing, but some folks don't like the way they look when they're not being used. You can remove it but you're left with a hole in the guitar.
Installation of guitar strap requires installation of 2 buttons, correct? You didn't explain how to install the second button which is the most difficult..... Your video is "uncomplete"!
No need to drill to screw in a strap button - if it should be there it would have been fitted by the manufacturer. The recommended location for the other end of the strap is at the top of the fret neck below where the strings are fitted secured with what looks Iike a shoe lace

Thanks for this video! I especially liked the trick of using the button as a guide for the drill. My pilot hole was aligned perfectly.
Great tutorial, the other videos weren't as detailed as you. I followed your instructions and now have a legit guitar strap button!
Using your instructions, I installed a button on my Martin D18. It worked perfectly - Thank you.
Good tip about using the hole through the button as the drill guide. Also the tip about positioning the button so it does not foul your hand. Good video thanks
Bought my grandson his 1st guitar and this helped a lot, Thanks!
Very helpful to me as I was doing this. Thank you!
Thank you! I did in my acoustic guitar, and works perfectly! Nice one!!
My favorite part is...he works like I do. Ooops. Dropped it. Pick it up and keep going. Thanks for the clear and practical tip!
Like the cupping hand tip!
Installing new strings on acoustic guitar for this green newbie will be next. Do you have a video for that?
Why use the felt ? Very good tips .

I don't think this method needs that. He never directly drilled into the wood. It was finished with the button and screwdriver.
@@jackdarby6080 if he didn't drill directly into the wood then how did he make a hole?
@@frogblues my bad, was probably drunk when watching this video
Thanks for sharing, I'm attempting this today

I usually don't care for safety gloves but doing it this way you definitely should use protection. Sweet lord
Thank you for this video!!!xoxo
What size drill bit do you use? How do you know what size drill bit is used for the screw?
Wouldn’t mounting it back a little on the less “meaty” section do a better job of getting out of the way on the lower frets?
Pretty alright! Nice cut.
This is sweet! Saves a trip to the shop, and a little help in the wallet department!
What about the button on rear end of the guitar?
Exactly what I've been wondering on a few videos. Is there something I'm missing?
yep incompetent video..two strap buttons not just one aeee
Most acoustic guitars already have the first button installed that's why they always show only the second one.

The word when you do something accidentally "whoop", such a midwestern thing. I do it too. Up north they say "ope".
Can I do this to my ovation guitar?

Another video only doing one pin.. OK I guess I'll just put the other one through 2mm of plywood without instruction then, thanks, big help mate.

Do you have to make positioning allowances for bolt on necks?
The other button installation will come in Episode 2 :) keep watching
It probably came with the other button installed. Most do.
very good thank you
But why are we adding only one button? What about the other end of the strap?

The same size as the screw shaft, whatever it may be.
Why are some guitars shipped out without a strap button?

Yes, I was a little disappointed when my Seagull came in without the button, so thanks for the tip on installing one guys.
You can do it!
what bout the other button???? there's two buttons ffs
The other button is usually there when you buy the guitar lol
@@TheMusikryder It's the input jack. You can't put a locking system in the input jack, when you're hooked up to an amp.
Why don't guitar makers just install it in the guitar when they make then.
Because not everyone wants one, many folks prefer to attach their strap to the headstock.

That way all the weight of the instrument is trying to bend the Neck to Body area and flexing the Head for hours at a time.. Great idea.
