- Conversation between Colonel Trautman (Richard Crenna) and Zaysen (Marc de Jonge) while Trautman is being interrogated in Afghanistan. During this conversation, Trautman warns Zaysen about how stupid it is to start a holy war in the middle east in the name of freedom:
Colonel Trautman: The Kremlin's got a hell of a sense of humor.
Zaysen: Please explain.
Colonel Trautman: You talk peace and disarmament. And here you are wiping out a race of people!

I like how no one seems to notice that Trautman low-key admitted that the Vietnam War was wrong.
Well, he was one of the people who got to observe it at close range. Plus, he saw what it did to Rambo.
Most of the senior brass of the US Military, including Westmoreland and Creighton Abrams(before he suddenly passed away), knew Vietnam was a quicksand. They warned McNamara, he wouldn't listen. And McNamara had a grip over LBJ who turned the conflict into a spiral.
@@JnEricsonx Trautman probably also had a majorly critical view of how the leadership handled the whole affair too.
I don't think he said it was wrong. In fact it was very just. We just could win without nuking north Vietnam back to the stone age and killing million's. The mission wasn't to win or kill the enemy but to liberate from communism. Opposing communism is never wrong.
@Ryan Warner it was wrong considering most Vietnamese people wanted communism and the south was a cruel puppet dictatorship

the irony of this scene..smh.
+lunatiksAlterEgo Not really... The Taliban is the "invading army" if you have a proper definition of what an invading army is. The attack yesterday was a perfect example of why the Afgani's want the U.S. there
+Nate Sobol the reason why he is saying this is ironic is because the Americans were funding the Mujahideen. only years after did they realise that the Mujahideen had links with the taliban. So the people who America was funding for almost an entire decade turned against them. yes the taliban may be the invading army but America is the one who made them who they are today. without the billions of dollars of funding the taliban, Alqaeda and other radicalised islamic groups wouldn't of been able to of gained any sort of power. the thing was that once the soviets pulled out in 1989 America stoped funding the Mujahideen. America weren't bothered about the afghanis they just wanted to suppress the commis. America should've atleast help Afghanistan build back up to a stable goverment instead of just abandoning the freedom fighters, who broke apart and started forming separate groups (some of which who became radicalised, where as some like the north and alliance became allies with america)
sameei21 I know why he's saying it's ironic, but it's wrong. Let's start from scratch. The United States was against Communism because of the devastation it brought to the Soviets and America's pre-existing private industry. Stalin was arguably worse than Hitler. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan in the 80s to expand Communism and create another puppet state. The last 16 years the United States has been playing a large role in Afghanistan fighting radical groups trying to impose Islamic Laws on Afghani's. During the 1980's, and throughout the Cold War, America's main focus was to stop the spread of Communism, because they thought Capitalism and Democracy were better (like it had been for Western Europe and North America). The United States, at that time, was only concerned about macro issues like how do we defeat Communism or are we going to get nuked tomorrow? On top of that The United States was already in a huge budget deficit because of increased military expenditure under Ronald Reagan. So many people expect the United States to predict the future, and because we didn't, we're therefore hypocrites. The Soviets didn't build schools, and I doubt they would've if they took over. They would've just raped the land of resources and left. America's current military doctrines are based off WW2, where you liberate it from it's invaders or oppressors and than hand it off to the people hoping that Democracy would occur. After WW2, this was never the case. I can assure you now, for the past 16 years, we've been building Afghani's schools.

"Where History Happens"
This was and still is the most famous and meaningful Rambo film in the Middle East, Northern Africa and at the time Eastern Europe under the communist regime, it was very much needed uplifting God-like figure to look up to. Hint, it is no coincidence that Rambo does look from a distance like someone from Middle East as well, it is a film that is seen as symbolic rather than realistic, which is what makes it powerful, because it creates an archetypal fairytale story and hero that people can apply to all kinds of situations in life. It can be both dangerous and also helpful. But one can see how this film can be understood by anyone no matter what language anyone speaks.
Including as a lesson to the home country where this film is made.

Tell that to British, the Mongols, the Greeks.
They never really were "freedom fighters," they were tribal warlords-who just so happened to be fighting against the USSR, which the USA hated more than anything at the time. They did not turn into terrorists, they just showed their true colors.
At least the Afghan communists treated the women better.
They were Islamic fundamentalists rebelling against Afghanistan's communist government. When you see pictures of Afghanistan in the 70s and 60s where people dress like westerners and women went to school, that's from the communist period. Then the jihadists decided enough was enough and they were going to take over the country, and they basically did almost immediately, which is why the president of Afghanistan asked for support from the Soviet Union, which shared a border with Afghanistan. Soviet troops invaded Afghanistan to push back the Islamic militants, but the USA just had to rush in there and give them special forces support, stinger missiles, guerrilla warfare training including IED construction, etc. At the time, Reagan's America thought any religious person was better than a "godless commie".
This is why the CIA's motto should really be, "oops! Accidentally broke another country!"
Ashes Mandalay go one better: after the fall of the Taliban in 2001 a conference was hens between NATO representatives and a number of tribal leaders in Afghanistan to plan out the future. The Afghans indicated they wanted the former king, Mohammed Reba Shah, reinstated. In their eyes he had never ceased being the only head of state with a claim to legitimacy, and they remembered his reign as a time of peace and stability. The US shot that idea down because hey, we don’t have a king so it must be a silly idea. Instead they favored Karzai because of how his northern alliance had helped defeat the Taliban. And Karzai turned out to just be another corrupt warlord.
@@dkupke the king's name was Zahir Shah. And putting him in charge would have made Pakistan hostile since Zahir Shah used to try and break away half of Pakistan and annex it into Afghanistan.
