LYRICS
I remember in my younger years
Walking to the city pool
Got yelled at, called a faggot
From this kid I knew in school
His dad, and dad before him
lived outside of town
With a lack of education
The options weren’t around
Sometimes I'd see that boy in class
With bruises on his eyes
Red and pretty swollen
Tears tangled up in pride
Repeating memorized rhetoric
About it being God's way
And if I didn't follow the good book
There'd be some hell to pay
But I don't blame you for how you turned out
A habit's hard to break
You're were born into what you became
And I was born this way
I can try to show compassion
Before you take that shot
Out here in the open
...Whether I like it or not
Driving back from a party
With friends on Saturday night
I slowed down to a wreckage
In the coldest part of night
That boy who called me faggot
Lie bleeding, almost dead
He wrecked that truck from drinking
And the windshield met his head
I pulled him from the driver seat
Said help is on its way
Put my hand up upon his chest
Said it'll be okay
When he focused on my likeness
I could see it in his eyes
Everything he'd been taught to hate
Would finally save his life
And the irony about this
I told him with a smile
Your God must work in stranger ways
than your heart will allow
He caught his breath between the tears
His eyes bloodshot and dim
His rebel-flag, tattooed hand, holding mine to him
He said...
Please don't blame me for how I turned out, I learned a little late
I was born into what I became
And you were born this way
I can try to show compassion
That might be all I've got
Out here in the open
...Whether I like it or not
Goddamn great solo on the outro, f***! Awesome, sound, tone & notes...damn again 👊👍
Amazing song
Thanks Butch. This is what's needed to have both sides meet somewhere in the middle. Couldn't have said it all better.
Absolutely love this track.... so good. It’s got a distinctly “Henley” production vibe and melody with an amazing and insightful lyric. Plus, absolutely killer outro solo. Butch, thnx for continuing to inspire singer/songwriter/lead guitarists everywhere.😊👍❤️
Seriously this solo is incredible! Goosebumps every time
I have been in love with Butch Walker's music for years. His behind the scenes contributions producing and writing songs for other people should be known more
I like some of your music, and yes this song is a touching one.
I remember when you premiered this in Phoenix on your last tour. Beautiful then, beautiful now. ❤
Sounds great brother!
I’ve been a fan of Butch’s for almost a decade and he has only ever released amazing music. This latest album is amazing and this song made me cry x
This is definitely some of your best work so far. I bought the album and I listen to this daily. I remember recording M3 in 1999 in Tulsa, with your kind permission of course, and to see the evolution in your writing and productions is so very inspiring. Now please give us more, more, more😎
I love Butch!🥰🤘🥰
Hey, Butch! You're amazing . Loving the music. It's much needed. Love the new music.
This one makes me cry, but I love it!
Thank you Butch.
Bro, your music is so different and so familiar at the same time. You are on to something. Sounds great!! I will be promoting and sharing your music across platforms today, because I think it's just what people want to hear. I'm impressed and will assume that if you make wise choices, you will see nothing but success in the near future. Thanks Butch Walker- my fiancee and I are enjoying your music on a Friday afternoon... thought provoking.
This hits the feelers, I had an uncle who had to tell my grandpa that he was gay in the 80’s. Took my grandpa a bit but he came around.
