Track and field athletics is the least popular sport in the US if it weren’t for the Olympics most Americans wouldn’t know who any of these people are ,ask Noah Lyles. They are probably more popular in Jamaica than the states, so it’s the world versus the small pool of athletes participating in Americas collegiate track and field programs .. which has way more international students participating in than I thought especially with the NIL opportunities available to them I just imagine in Jamaica track and field is the national sport
There are about 120 Americans to every one Jamaican. There are probably more Americans participating in high school, college and professional track and field than there are Jamaicans. So your "small pool" argument is invalid.
It might not be a sport that is hyped up BUT there are still loads of schools and people who participate. After all it's not like track and field has a lot of space and empty lanes in the US and they struggling to find runners...these things have a cap as to how many people can enter events. So as mentioned in another comment there are still loads of peopel participating in the sport...Now whether the VIEWERSHIP matches the NFL or the NBA is what you are talking about in popularity, of course Track and Field don't draw as many like those BUT they are very much NOT choosing from a SMALL POOL...They are still seeking out the top athletes to run...Jamaica is still operating farrr above the potential of others...we should celebrate!!!
Have you seen a high school meet, any of the shoe meets and also Junior Olympics...numbers outperform most sports here in the US. The problem is there is no money to be made. The sport is quite popular at the youth level.
