    26:30 - If the mass of the helicopter is 0.034 kg it means that to take off you need at least 0.034 * 9.81 = 0.3354 [N] of thrust. If the rotors give combined 0.112 N it means you do not even have power to take off not to mention to achieve any acceleration.

    Dear Mr. Andrew Gross,
    This video was good in that it showed many people (me included) how to use the software more effectively. Parametric studies truly are well welcome!
    However, there is a fundamental flaw in the second simulation concerning the interpretation of data from helicopter model. The amount of thrust generated is not enough to overcome the weight of the model itself.
    The correct formula is NOT F=ma but (for vertical moving objects acting against gravity) is F=ma+mg or F=m(a+g).

    I have a problem that perhaps you could help with? I have a gas sensing unit that uses a pump to suck in air at a certain pressure and I want to see how the amount of air it sucks in changes with turbulent conditions around it, essentially putting it in a wind tunnel. However I can't seem to set up the suction pressure of the sensor unit within the wind tunnel test section. How would you go about doing that?
    Great video by the way, best guide I've seen on youtube.

    • @goengineer
      @goengineer  7 років тому

      Hi David,
      Force measurements in Newtons is definitely more technically accurate but referring to this measurement in kilos is more practically understood. This is similar to how pounds are both a measure of force (lbf) and mass (lbm) in imperial units but not quite the same.
      Yes, measuring the force would probably make more sense.

      In the particle study would reveal how many of your particles are leaving versus entering your system. The difference is your accumulation of particles that stay in the hopper.

    Useful video for me, i wonder if the flow simulation can simulate the polymer in the extrusion die, if yes , can you share some tutorial? thank you for your wonderful video again!

    • @goengineer
      @goengineer  7 років тому

      Hi wukehongli,
      Flow Simulation is designed for somewhat less viscous fluids then an extruded polymer. However, with the release of 2018 and free fluid surfaces it may now be possible to put in extremely viscous fluid parameters and do this. We have not seen an specific testing to that affect though.

    Hey,
    Thank you very much for this video, it helps a lot to break this irrational barrier of just using few tools from fluid simulation.
    I came across a problem using time dependency. Do you know if it is possible to add motion to parts in function of the physical time, that are not in the boundary limits (same as a valve)!

    • @goengineer
      @goengineer  7 років тому

      In the Flow Simulation calculation none of the bodies can necessarily move. Things like rotating regions actually have the solid portions of the model remain static while the air is made to move around them. In this way the setup simulates how the air would react to a moving blade but it is the air that is moving and not the blade.

    But as stated Alwyn Hartman a year ago, the amount of thrust generated is not enough to overcome the weight of the model itself.
    I tested this simulation with a model of a working quadcopter. I got almost the same results. The thrust would not be enough to lift the drone. What could be the problem? Or am I missing something?

    • @goengineer
      @goengineer  7 років тому

      Hi AED Team,
      I am unsure where the source of the dependency may lie but it is always worth checking an analysis for mesh independence (reducing the mesh cell size until the results no longer change).
      Ultimately this question is too complex to answer in the comments section of UA-cam. You would be advised to contact your local SOLIDWORKS support VAR in order to open an investigation of your model to see if a problem exists with its setup or with the program itself.

    @inspiredserge6604 9 років тому +4

    Thanks for the presentation.
    I think that the helicopter acceleration calculation is not right - you didn't take into account the gravity. Lifting force needs to overcome the gravity force, which is m*g=0.034[kg]*9.8[N/kg]=0.33[N]. So the "good RPM" should provide force bigger than 0.33[N]+0.034[kg]*3[N/kg]. (3[m/s^2] requires 3[N/kg]).
    Please check.
    Regards

    • @goengineer

    Using the parametric study option, is there a way to find a minimum or maximum for a goal? I'm testing the drag on a race car and want to minimize the force in the negative x direction (maximum value).

    • @borret_
      @borret_ 9 років тому

      With the secant method it's using you cant do this easily. I would just use a stepped input as opposed to a range. Then you can create a smaller range after you figure out where the sign of the result is not changing and narrow in on the result which could end up where the sign changes.
      Example: I created a range input of a sports car wing from -.2rads to .75 rads. At the end of the range, the values are very small. 35 pounds of downforce and it never reaches my target of 300 pounds. With a step input it finds a bunch of values in between with it appearing the largest value near 0 rads. We can assume that this is the maximum in this case, or you could do a tighter range near zero with a smaller step. You dont set a target in the step case.

    hmm, one question about : ua-cam.com/video/wv4gvsojKNo/v-deo.html at 26:03
    if the helicopter mass is 0.034kg, then its weight is : m x g = 0.034 x 9.81 = 0.33 N
    then the 0.112 N calculated thrust can not keep more than one third of helicopter airborne, can it ?...
    or can someone tell me where i am wrong ???

    • @goengineer
      @goengineer  7 років тому

      Yes, you are correct. Since the thrust force from the blades is 3 times less than the weight of the helicopter it would not be able to take off from the ground. It seems clear that this helicopter is in need of some kind of redesign.
      The overall process to analyze the helicopter is sound though. It would have kept this design from going to manufacturing as it is here.

    I had a question regarding the RC-Helicopter.
    When setting up wizard, in the page where we set it to "External" and "Rotating Regions" , in the bottom left the ask for the axis, I noticed you continued with X-Axis.

    • @goengineer

      Hi Lilo17x,

  • @alihaider82

    If the zone is moving in ClockWise direction, then what will be the rotation direction of the blade? I simulated a helicopter rotor blade in Fluent: When the blade incidence angle is positive (trailing edge down), rotor goes negative lift and airflow going up instead of going down but reverse in case of negative blade incidence? why?

    • @goengineer
      @goengineer  7 років тому

      Since the rotating region is actually moving the air across the blades rather than having the blade itself move through the air the rotating region direction is the opposite of the direction the blade would be moving in.
      It sounds like the same is true of Fluent. In that setup you are seeing the air spill off the blade in the wrong direction so the rotating region should be reversed.

      Such a setup would not be possible in Flow Simulation. Flow Simulation is not able to run calculations where a liquid and a gas share the same fluid domain. That is to say it cannot work with systems that have a free surface of liquid with air above it. That is a limitation in the software.

    • @goengineer
      @goengineer  6 років тому

      Griffin,
      These components are probably made "In-Context" in the assembly. That would mean they went to 'Insert', 'Component', 'New Part' to create a new part work space then placed a revolve feature into that part by editing it directly from within the assembly. That way the disk can be positioned exactly on top of the rotor blades for this analysis.

      I am unsure what exactly you are referring to with this question. What is the time code of this video are you looking at and can you expound on what you mean?

      GoEngineer for example, look at 23:30...there at the boundary of the lower rotating frame, you can see that colors doesn't always match... there is a part where cut plot shows yellow inside rotating region, just by the boundary, but inside rotating frame...however, right there at the same point, but outside the rotating frame, it shows a green color. It sudenly changes color (so also velocity), just over rotating frame boundaries.

      Giuliano,
      I asked around about the discontinuity that you pointed out and there were no apparent answers for it. If you would like to pursue it further, you may want to send a screen capture, or link to this video, to your local SOLIDWORKS VAR (www.solidworks.com/sw/purchase/varlocator.htm ) so they can open a service request with SOLIDWORKS Corp to answer the question.

      GoEngineer yeah sure i'll do. I don't really know if it is a graphic card compatibility issue or just a mesh stuff. I also have notice when you local mesh the boundary with a high quality mesh, the plot becomes smoother and smoother, depending on how high level you use.

    how to tell CFD results are reliable? Without experimental data.

    • @goengineer

      Hi fadoobaba,
      The only way to check if the Flow Simulation results are of good quality is to reduce the mesh cell size and see if the results change. At the point where the mesh cell size can be reduced and the results no longer change the solution has converged to the limits of the applied boundaries. Whether this applies to the real life analog though is up to the judgement of the analyst.

      ***** thanks for guiding me. i have been long time to why the rotor is not rotating. but i can do lessen burden from you. i don't know how is thanks

      Due to how Flow Simulation runs the calculation for a rotating region you would not see the rotor rotating. In this analysis the solid portions of the model are static (including the rotor). Rotating regions applied around the rotors cause the air to spin in that region and deflect off the rotors giving an effect of how the rotor would redirect the air.
      The result is that the rotor itself is not moving but instead the air moves around the rotor.

    Good training video but I think your engineer made a mistake calculating the helicopter acceleration since he didn't consider the weight of helicopter since with this thrust force it cannot even be lifted!

    • @goengineer
      @goengineer  7 років тому

      Yes, indeed there was an oversight there. The helicopter definitely wouldn't take off.

      Denis Lipatnikov marketing major people will never be able to optimize the designs. Those engineers who use these software are often or more than often asked to optimize the product analyzed based on some design goals, you need engineering knowledge for that!
      I don't think a marketing major would ever understand principle stresses or even basic thermo/aerodynamics like entropy or lift theories etc. for example, that's why they are marketing major in the first place.
      Marketing people talk well, just talk well. They don't know the technical side of the thing, I guess the best move by MS was to appoint Nadella the CEO he is a designer, a CS guy not a marketer.
