A New England Shaker Museum

- Last week after Kayaking, Mark and I took a little drive exploring the area we were in. To our surprise, we discovered an old Shaker Village. In today's video, I am sharing what we found but first, as promised, I will show you the "almost finished" backyard project.....how we got rid of our Bishops Weed and Bamboo.

Carla, I absolutely loved this video, your garden is looking beautiful & the stone wall is just exquisite, that natural look of stone is gorgeous. Mascoma Lake looks so pretty & The Shaker Village history is so interesting, enough to give me some good reading material tonight. The buildings are truly magnificent. Carla, is this Amish Community? I do find the Amish history & way of life very interesting, their morals & values, their belief in hard work, the community spirit they share is all fascinating. Great video Carla. Thank you…🙂
Thank you Jean. No, this was a Shaker Community....different from the Amish. I have visited a few Amish Communities when I lived in Michigan. Holmes County Ohio was definitely my favorite....just beautiful and of course the food was delicious! Happy Sunday Jean!

Carla, let me be the first to comment on your enjoyable video. Thank you for sharing your tour and brief history of this beautiful Shaker village and shrine of Our Blessed Mother. I know about the apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes and Fatima, but nothing about Our Lady of La Sallette ( not sure of the spelling ). You inspire me to google the story of this apparition. I love the values, faith, and simplicity of the Shaker + Amish communities. We all can learn a few lessons from them. God bless your "kindred spirit". Robert

Carla, you inspired me to Google the story of Our Lady of La Salette. It was on September 19,1846, Our Blessed Mother appeared weeping to two shepherd children in the French Alps speaking to them in their native French dialect. She gave a message of repentance, conversion, warning, and hope for all humanity. The Catholic Church approved this apparition in 1851. It would be interesting to find out how this devotion and shrine made its way up to New Hampshire decades later. Thanks again, Robert. @@mynewenglandstory
The lake is "Mascoma" Lake. My son and grandson fish there almost every weekend. The lake and the Shaker Village are not far from us. The Christmas display at the shrine is beautiful.

My husband and I have visited all the NE Shaker Villages over the years. I thought Enfield had the prettiest of locations. I would love to stay overnight there. Other lovely ones are in Sabbathday Lake Maine and Pittsfield Mass (esp the Round Barn). The story/philosophy of the Shakers is so interesting and the furniture and crafts they created are amazing. Thanks for the tour. On another note, your property is going to be gorgeous. Absolutely love that stone wall.

That Shaker village and station of the crosses looks lovely . I was wondering why there was no one there, til you mentioned it was closed. It looks like a peaceful place to contemplate.
I haven’t been to the Enfield shaker community. After seeing your beautiful video, I’ll have to plan a day trip to explore.
I’ve been to shaker community in Canterbury NH a few times. It’s one of my favorite day trips. The area is absolutely beautiful, the tour guides are very knowledgeable and you can bring a picnic lunch.
There are also smaller shaker communities in Harvard Mass, and Shirley Mass. the buildings are currently occupied by private homeowners but there is an old shaker cemetery.

Thanks for sharing this piece of history. It must have been a busy place in the times when the Shakers were living there and farming all those acres of land.
I watched a documentary on PBS about the Shakers. If I recall correctly, one of their mottos is "Hands to work hearts to God" definitely a place I'd like to visit. TFS

I had to laugh when you talked about growing rocks. We grew rocks on our blue ridge property in West Virginia.
