You two are putting your heart ans soul into your dreams. Outstanding! 🎉
Thanks! We are indeed. Its nice to be able to make her our own.
Blaine
As an old aluminium boat builder we cut a lot of sheeting with a circular saw with a tungsten tip blade it is ten times easier and faster.
I used a circular saw to remove a lot of the portions of decking that we replaced. It was just a standard carbide tipped blade but those blades are cheap. It worked very well indeed.
Blaine
You're putting a lot of yourself into your boat. I appreciate your craftmanship. You'll definitely know your boat from stem to stern. An invaluable resource.
We definitely don't mind putting in the time to rebuild it the way we want it. We do enjoy the work for the most part as well. Over the last few years we have definitely been through every part of the boat and are comfortable with every individual system. Glad you enjoy the content.
Blaine
The correct nautical term is bulwark. That is what the aluminum sheets are for.
Thanks! We don't always know/recall the correct terminology.
Blaine
You guys definitely nailed it. Love your videos and your boat/ship. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
Hello over there! Glad you are enjoying the videos. We plan to circumnavigate Australia some time in 2028 ish.
Blaine
That looks great. The welding job was awesome too.
Thank you! I do my best.
Blaine
Blaine knocked that one out of the park 🤙 what a chore to recreate/rebuild what was there. I myself would have had a work float to work off of. I would have fallen overboard 😂 or dropped tools into the chuck. I used to build fish farm pens with dad 25 plus years ago. I know how easy it is to lose tools to Davy Jones locker 😬 When you guys had Tangaroa tied to the dock it showed the scale of her she is a long boat.
Thanks! That was definitely one of the big jobs. It was difficult maintaining motivation on that one. There may have been one or two tools sacrificed. She is definitely a lot of boat.
Blaine
That looks really really good.
Lots of work but so worth it.
Thanks! It was a pretty big job that spanned a very long period of time. Glad the hardest part is behind us.
Blaine
32:57 all of those routed pockets for those stanchions were perfect
They worked out really well.
29:18 I know that was a lot of hard work with all the curves and the angles and the grinding job.Well done.
Soooo tedious but worth it.
I have no idea how you tackle this restoration. It's incredible and something I can't imagine. I do maintenance and projects on my 44 DeFever but it feels miniscule after watching these videos! Boat is a verb to me. And labor aside I'm sure all the supplies etc are not cheap.
It's definitely a challenge to stay motivated and we have to take the odd break from working for a bit. Supplies aren't cheap but being I own an automotive shop I get pretty heavy discounts on many things which helps immensely. Thanks for watching!
Blaine
You guys nailed it it looks awesome. There will be no more rot
Thanks! Just have to spend some time at some point and fix the corrosion that's there already.
Blaine
nailed it for sure......very impressed and you have fun while your at it. My son lives near Cortney I hope to she your ship in person some day. DJ
Thanks! We were just in Comox at the beginning of the month!
Looks awesome!
Thanks! We think it turned out well.
Blaine
Railing looks Great
Thanks! We love them!
Blaine
Yes you nailed it. Love the lines of the boat. Good job
Thanks! We are very happy with the result. Still a bit of finishing that needs to happen but the hard part is done.
Blaine
Compound angles have to be spot on. Otherwise you’ll be miles out. I found that out the hard way, when I was cutting jack rafter for the roof.. love the video 👍👍👍
Pretty amazing how much it will affect the seams when you put it all together. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Blaine
Happy new year …….🎉
Forget the negative reactions and do your own way ……it looks fantastic and well done.
Greetings from Holland
Thanks! Happy New Year to you as well! We don't let the negative stuff get to us. We actually get a good laugh out of it sometimes. Take care over there!
Blaine
100% nailed it, I would never paint it.😁
Glad you like it!
Blaine
@5:20 Do you have to disconnect the batteries when wielding, like on a car?
@29:10 How awesome does the hull look without paint. Does my head in why people paint ali.
I get the privacy at seating area, if not instead using formed lounge seating, but what's the purpose of the ali panels down the side, vs just having hand rails? All they cover is the wall behind them. Plus add extra boat weight, fuel burn.
I have not had to. In these cases I am actually welding off of the battery bank through the inverters as we do net even currently have an AC generator. I do have a little device that clamps onto the batteries when I am working on cars but I think that this bank is likely large enough that it basically filters any AC waveform back fed onto it. Haven't had any issues with computers or anything. When I am welding at the shop I get the odd computer issue but not on the boat. We love the bare look. It is more utilitarian but so much easier. The aluminum panels were just there as an aesthetic. The rear upper deck area is enclosed as a weather proof area and I think they likely continued the panels forward just to keep the appearance consistent.
Blaine
Impressed by the knowledge, willingness to carry out the tasks, and time management / sharing.
Thanks! It can get pretty tiring at times but we push through. We work well together. Take care.
Blaine
“Nailed it”!!!!
Thanks! We love it too.
Blaine
Another huge project. You guys have so much patience-and thank God for a talented fabricator husband!
Thanks! I try my best!
Blaine
'Safety squint!' At least there is none of that famous 'weldling by braille'....
Lol, very difficult to TIG by braille. Don't think I want to try that.
Blaine
Nailed it! Happy new year 🎉
Thanks Joe! Happy New Year!
First, to see the new look.....😊
😁
Growing up always held my stepdad get his boat ready watching this even though I miss it reminds me not having a boat well that and I'm a truck driver just don't make enough to
You never know what life may have in store. One day things may change and you can get back to boat stuff. Take care and thanks for doing what you do.
Blaine
I just started watching your channel yesterday (subscribed). On the rail replacement video now. Do you have a living space and bridge tour video?
We don't have one up yet but there has been lots of interest for that. We will try to get that done. The boat is a bit of a disaster currently as we are still in full on refit mode but will see what we can do.
Blaine
Great job!
Thanks so much!
Blaine
Are you not always worried about dropping your tools, welding helmet and everything else overboard? Great job as always, I'm loving this series and am a new subscriber.
Lol, always! There have been a few casualties but fortunately none of the expensive tools. Welcome to the channel!
Blaine
Blaine, great Tig welding there.
Why, thank you! I am not the best but I do my best.
Blaine
31:17 5200 sealant is the best stuff in the world next to Stika flex
Its pretty crazy sticky stuff!
Eventually you should put peened over aluminium rivets in where you used screws. Hint a little air hammer works great.
Interesting idea, aircraft style. We do want these things easily removable though so caulking can be refreshed in the future. Drilling out hundreds of rivets would put me over the edge 😂.
Blaine
Why have a door at the end of the walkway, if the sides of the aft deck are still open to the elements? Unless there is clip on canvas walls 👍👍
That whole upper aft deck has a full canvas surround. Makes for a nice outside space in the winter that can be heated.
Blaine
Great bulwarks.
Thanks!
Blaine
If I’d have been doing that I’d have fallen in the water at least once a day, & lost the majority of my tools!
Looks good though 👍
It got pretty damn awkward in a few places. We are quite happy with the result though.
Blaine
scarf joints need marine wood glue. You'll never get the same strength out of caulk.
We were looking for it to behave like more of an expansion joint. Time will tell how it works out. Take care.
Blaine
I think its rivetting aye
😁
Thumb switch for your welder would help... foot pedal looks awkward
I should for sure at some point. I have learned to operate the pedal in some pretty awkward areas though.
Blaine
Money pit i would not have bought that boat Australia good luck
We look at it a bit differently. Obviously there will be money to be spent however my motto is "You can spend lots of money or you can spend lots of time". Doing everything ourselves saves an immense amount of money. We do enjoy the work for the most part as well. We will see you guys in Australia some time in 2028 likely as our plan is to make our way over there to circumnavigate the country. Take care!
Blaine
It occurred to me while watching you struggle with the pedal that you are only using it as an on/off switch. Have you ever thought of switching to a torch with an on/off switch on it? You don't seem to be using the "adjustable" function of the pedal at least on the work in this video. Adjustable current may be necessary in other usage, but it does not seem to be used in this instance.
It was just an on/off switch in this situation as the welder was at its maximum output for this stuff. It needed all of the jam all of the time. A torch with the adjustment at the end would come in handy at times though. Pretty awkward welding in some of the places on a boat. Thanks for watching!
Blaine
I thought aluminium is light 😂
Lol, that only goes so far. Carrying those bloody things that far was definitely no fun. Can't say my cardio game is on point though.
Blaine
she's looking SWEEEET
Glad you like it. We love it!
Blaine
God forbid that you should be anything like me, but I'm just curious, how many tools not to mention kilos of screws did you lose overboard during this install?
Oh, there were a couple of tools sacrificed to the sea gods but fortunately none of the expensive ones! Plenty of screws went for a swim though.
Blaine
I've had metal and glass pieces removed from my eyes, when you said safety squint I thought NO SURELY NOT, omg you only get 2 eyes please think safety first
I do try to remember to wear them but sometimes I am bad about it. In fairness though, I didn't squint in that video. I closed my eyes completely. 😣
Blaine
Is their a reason why you can't use Gorilla glue on the scarf joints it even sets up with water
Not really sure. The stuff we used is nice as it remains very flexible after curing and can move with the wood. Not sure how Gorilla glue works for that.
Blaine
Did yo u ever consider the purchase of a MIG welding set. It would be a lot easier in awkward areas.
Thats what he's using to weld the Al and Stainless steel..
A spoolgun is on my wishlist. Maybe Janis will get one for my birthday.😁
Blaine
What happened to your other channel? I’m like watching things again am I not?
Its still running they bought this stuff back to form a seperate technical ...largely none sailing .. channel rather than newcomers having to go back through all the full story.
Clive is correct. We found we had a split viewership and it was making it difficult for UA-cam to find our people. To solve this we split the channel. One is only the traveling and exploring stuff and the other is only the tech stuff. We will also be going a bit more in depth into the decisions and solutions on this channel. Thanks for watching!
Blaine
The panels should be painted
Just a "Tangaroa-UA-cam" decal
Thats how come they had to strip it all off and found it had corroded inder the paint anyway... So this is going to be naked metal and either a brushed finnish or engine turned but a wipe over with natural lanolin after its stable oxide layer has formed will be all it needs to protect it and stop further corrosion developing...
That just leaves the teak to refinish.
I think decals will be all we would ever put back on her. We do have some ideas.
Blaine
Your dangerous with power equipment
Yes indeed.
