To me folk music is the best kind of music, it just has this rare ethereal quality about it. It comforts you and gets you through the winter, it inspires you and sends you to another place, a very beautiful place.
Wow, been approximately 8yrs since I last saw this! Time flies an' all that! I distinctly remember trying to pull Lo Polidoro here (she invited me to the gig)! A few weeks later I was hanging out at her place! Alas, I didn't get anywhere ! She was just being (very) nice to me, & she already had an 'on/off' boyfriend at the time (they're now married with a young son now)! Hey-ho! And oh yeah, on a different note, the host Danny sounds like Tony Blair to me! =OD =O)
I listen to "new folk" and "pysch folk" ...that's pretty much my favorite stuff! I don't really see what's wrong with the label folk. Ultimately it boils down to marketing, I guess. Artists want to be "beyond labels" or "above genres" in order to separate themselves from the pack. It's a way of saying "I'm better" without literally saying it. Sort of like the exclusive scene of late 70s NY disco.
greenplanet2400 My guess is that they probably don’t like being labeled folk because it’s a really vague label to be listed under. Just like how most Southern Rock bands/musician didn’t like being called Southern Rock bands/musicians or how most Grunge bands bands/musicians didn’t like being called Grunge bands/musicians. They al have different sounds from eachother, and sometimes even have different audiences, yet they’re still slapped under the same roof that is their given genre label.
I think it's also because using a label makes it easier for people to visualize what you are doing. Folk=Bob Dylan, Freak Folk=Devendra Banhart. Bad Folk=Joanna Newsome. The thing you shouldn't do is pigeonhold people (DB is tired of the Freak Folk label, apparently...). I honestly wouldn't care if an artist with so & so label pinned to them decided to go down a different direction musically or just switch things up a bit...as long as it's good stuff. People just have to open their minds a bit.
The magistrate has decreed that thou must go into ye stocks for seven days and nights for such words. Indeed ye devil has gotten hold of thy tongue and thou must be seen as a varlet and a rogue and pelted with foul things.
I don't realy consider myself a Folk artist either simply because you are often stigmatised by the term. Most people expect Folk to be traditional and although these artists and myself may draw from some traditional influences the music that is created is not purely a result of this. Here we enter the relms of magick and myriad possibilities!

what a wolly!
Why is devendra Banhart not on here?
or cocorosie?
Folk music sounds 'woody" - best description ever. "Mushroom pixie rock" even better. I prefer "psychedelic folk" - what's wrong with that?
