If the earth were devastated by a full scale nuclear war it would *still* be more habitable than Mars
It gets even more ridiculous when you do the math behind how much energy it would take to give Mars viable oceans and a hydrosphere needed to sustain climate, precipitation, and land life. Even with far future technology, the sheer amount of energy required to bring that much water to Mars is a very tall order, and water is by far the lion's share of the mass you need to bring in for terraforming, compared to atmosphere.

It is SO MUCH EASIER to fix earth than make mars habitable. Wanna lower temps on earth? Solar mirror between earth and the sun that can be used to regulate now much sun reaches earth..now I hear you thinking "that seems pretty much impossible", I agree, it sure does.. but it is still TRIVIAL compared to moving trillions of cubic miles of ice from the kuiper belt to mars… So, sooo much easier building a god damn sun wall in space.
That really puts into perspective just how dumb the mars terraforming project actually is. And elon’s plans to sun bathe on mars by 2021 starts seeming unlikely at this point…

That is the crux of the argument Musk makes.
And the Earth is becoming uninhabitable for reasons that are essentially man made, including social and psychological reasons. So even if we could live on Mars, we or whoever goes there would be bringing those mindsets with them. Which would guarantee the exact same ends, only accelerated.
It reminds me of the end of the Bounty Trilogy. The story is about a bunch of british navy go to Tahiti for the first time. The men fall in love and hook up with the local women. Some of them stage a mutiny against the tyrannical captain. After lots more infighting, finally some of the survivors end up on an isolated Island, named Pitcairn Island today after the leader of one of the mutineers. Decades later, someone finally found them on the island. None of the men had survived. There were only women and their children. The men kept fighting and killing each other until the women finally got sick of them and killed the rest.
If Musk ever did go to Mars, which will not happen of course, but if he did, I guess he'd be the first one killed.

There is a great book that goes into this ‘escapist’ idea that somehow humans will escape the planet in the event of a great catastrophe. “Remembrance of Earth’s Past Series.” goes into why we will never leave the planet without everyone leaving at the same time. Because if you start drawing straws for who lives and who dies, it will only end in violence.
