Learning the slap is killing me. Ive been messing with these drums for years yet can never get that really crisp pop sound. Are the drum tuned really high and does synthetic skin have better 'pop?
Wow thanks lotta info here. So like i told the OP, was gifted 3 handmade congas (tumba, conga, quinto) by a client/friend -by a guy who carves out the drum and created over maybe 6 months. The problem was i was never given a sound sample before they shipped and they came to me tuned extremely low - a fact i realized after watching the sonic crack of a whip slap like in this video. The other major fact is that these congas are rope toned and i hadnt the slightest about how to work them until watching a few videos - which successfully raised the notes from the bottom of the piano scale to now a G for conga and a B for the Quinto -then I ran outta rope. The slap is definitely better now but still not at as sharp as the above - Im registering the video's quinto tone note at a high E so that seems a pretty far way for me to go -im gonna need alot more rope :D Just contacted the drum maker and he said the skin is "medium thickness" and made outta Steer hide - not really sure what a steer is as im a city boy lol
Exactly. Also a good way to practise is on a wood table. You'll be amazed on how well your different strokes can improve this way. You'll notice when ever you began to play a drum again,,,
Cathy S Sure, I'll send it to you within a few days. The tricky thing is that the rhythm starts on the beat of one with an open tone in your right hand. But when you repeat the rhythm, this open tone is left out, and there is a pause instead. From this point, there are no strokes on the first beat, neither in the first or in the second measure. But it'll be easier for you to see when I send the notation.
Hi...nice, please write out the notation with the rests etc...standard notation is good, it really helps, I got to learn 100s of patterns , can't remember, thanks
