Far from the Madding Crowd - Locations in Devizes, Wiltshire

A tour of some of the locations in Devizes town used in the making of John Schlesinger's film of Thomas Hardy's "Far From The Madding Crowd", starring Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, Alan Bates and Peter Finch. Bill Huntly talks to Bill Underwood, who was an extra in the film, and witnessed the filming at the various Devizes locations.

That was fascinating, thank you. I live near Devizes but, not being a local born and bred, only cottoned to some of the locations when I saw the film again recently. Will have to have a little explore, I'm a big Hardy fan.

Jan B Thank you for that - I presume that you saw the original Julie Christie/Terence Stamp version? If you have access to the new, re-issued version of the movie (not the re-make) you will see that we have made one of the "extras" on the DVD - "Devizes then and now" which is a shortened version of this video.
