Goodbye to Japan's Epic Ice Falls?

- The Nanataki Falls are one of my favorite spots in Hachimantai all year round, but the ice falls in the winter are a really fun casual snowshoe hike. In fact, I'll be guiding some snowshoe tours out there this February! (Just hit me up on Instagram or email if you want more info on that.)

As some of you may know- I've been away guiding in central Japan since 3/13, and thus couldn't be filming or editing. In my absence, Hernie (twitter.com/HernieEdits), my new editor, used this footage from January to made this video! He's edited the last 4 videos on my channel including this one. Did any of you notice a change? If you didn't.. good, and if you did and it was a positive change, also good!

The ending was particularly nice; the music and slow fade with the gorgeous landscape. Kinda sad but still lovely. Good job to both of you!

This channel is underrated. More people should watch it.
It is hard not to be concerned that the climate has changed so quickly that the falls no longer freeze even halfway. Still beautiful, but a sign of what is to come. It is nice to know what they were when winters were consistently cold, and to have that experience to remember throughout life.

I'd bet that you'll be able to enjoy a frozen Nanataki falls again, just there should be an increase in the number of seasons where it doesn't quite happen.

The first ever video I saw on your channel and which instantly made me fall in love with your work was a previous video of you visiting the Nanataki falls, so it was rather lovely to see you visit them again in this video. I love the snowy forests so a walk to the falls would be kind of paradise for me lol. It's very sad that future generations may not get to experience some of these beautiful natural sights which are fast changing and diminishing. Where I live we just don't see snow anymore, so long gone are the fun snowy days that I used to experience 30 years ago when I was a kid. Is concern about climate change something quite strong in Japanese society would you say?

To be honest, I don't hear Japanese people talking about climate change anywhere near as much as westerners do. BUT- if I talk to other older people about the mountain conditions they will quickly talk about how much the climate has changed in terms of snow and ice, and then get into how the climate overall has changed. There is an air of resignation, of that it can't be helped.. which I suppose is kind of true on an individual level.

I think people who spend a lot of time in the mountains can’t help but be worried for the future and of what we have to lose. I guess it is important to be grateful for what we still have as that soon may be gone

I feel calmed after watching this. Has to be good for ones health. And who is to say that the waterfall will not return to being fully frozen. Like the unpredictable bloom of the Sakura.

Thank you for showing us this. I live in Connecticut (east coast USA) and I too, have noticed our winters are no longer winters. We mostly received rain this year, very little snow. :(

Climate change has vastly changed winter in my part of Canada. This year it has been short, wet, and warm. Grew up with a good amount of snow by Xmas and staying around until early April with frequent days of -10 to -25 C. No where near that these years. It has really changed over the past 5 or so years.
I've been away from Wisconsin for the last couple decades, but I hear that the situation is similar.
so a second thing lost :( I do remeber the previous vids and the fantastic colors of the fall..what a shame. I suppose if it happens less often it will be even more treasured (uh..and overrun)...
anyway, the forest is still lovely :) and waterfalls have something wonderful about them even so...I miss having snow regularly..i've said it many times before but htis place barely gets snow anymore these days :( but spring is now upon us and we will see what the next winter brings when it comes :)

Here in the mountains of Nagano Ken we have a very similar situation. No long cold spells in winter anymore. The ski slopes suffer lack of snow sometimes, but nobody here mentioned 'climate change' actually I have never heard anyone uttering that term at all. It's just the way things are and don't ask any questions. That's the Japanese way.
That's a shame but we have to enjoy what we have

QUESTION!!!! Are wild pigs a problem when overnight camping/hiking? If so what do you do?
Not yet. Haven't heard of any wild boar injuries. They are around, but haven't caused problems for hikers or campers yet. Just for farmers.
A beautiful hike, but sad that the era of frozen waterfalls may be at an end. Where I live in the US, our native eastern brook trout is a species directly imperiled by climate change - and there is only so far they can retreat up into the mountains to find the cold waters they require.
I didn't know about the brook trout, but so many species seem to be threatened right now... I don't know what to say.
Hope you don't mind me saying, but you come across as one of the nicest guys on UA-cam and your videos are gorgeous. Here's to many more, climate change be damned. Take it easy bud :)

Wow the Japanese guide thinks he’s a meteorologist. Blaming “climate change” on a local waterfall not freezing.

I mean, if the waterfalls no longer freeze over, which this video clearly show, then the climate has indeed changed. This area is warmer than before.
the meaning of the word "change" must be alien to you.
Meteorologists don't study the climate, Climatologists do (weather ≠ climate).
Funny how, oftencase, those that have less education and knowledge are the ones with the stronger compulsion to grab the megaphone.
