  • Have you ever thought about walking away? Can they survive without you? Can you snap out of it? These are some of the questions that people with mental health conditions and their caregivers answer on this episode of Can Ask Meh? Season 3.
The 2016 Singapore Mental Health Study conducted by the Institute of Mental Health found that 1 in 7 persons in Singapore has experienced a mental disorder in their lifetime. Despite this high prevalence, stigma and misconceptions remain. The Study on Public Attitudes towards Persons with Mental Health Conditions in Singapore conducted by the National Council of Social Service found that more than 5 in 10 respondents were not willing to live with, live nearby, or work with a person with a mental health condition.

Thank you for bringing this up. It is very touching because I feel that a lot of people understand my struggles. I suffered from bipolar disorder and my husband is schizoaffective. My mother in law is also bipolar and very often relapse. She will trigger my husband who will in turn trigger me. A lot of times I wanted to walk away. Seeing how others also struggled help me realise I am not alone.

My whole life I never knew love I was 39 I met this one person that took my whole heart.while I was with her I started to b successful.i had a reason 💯 deseri Marie Monte.love was real but deseri has a nephew and he had issues I started pointing thhem out.out of no where she was gone and had everyone believing what Tina and Joe Harris have everyone believing about me saying I'm this way and that way and I'm not anything other then caring .Xmas. 2 years ago my (hate this word)mom.she said I had to leave I was making her dogs nurvous..they still say the same thing ABOUT me years later that I realise they don't even know me.deseri left took our daughter and left me alone .abandoned me I was homeless.no one cares I care.. hypocrite Christian want to have everyone else pray for them I miss my daughter I cry everyday I was hospitalized 3 times last year for attempts and no one cared and when I say something I'm always this way or did that and said this..judgment stegma makes me automatically guilty homeless and childless..I act on impulse I'm suffering with major depression I was blamed for a cut on her head 2 days later .went to court sat alone on left side she was on right side saying everything to hurt me make her look good and she sounded like my mom and said so many things about me that everyone coached her to say.that washorrible listening to her as I sat there alone tears were dropping off my cheeks..why

I am absolutely loving the conversations that are opening up about mental health. I personally struggle with depression and and an eating disorder, and I'm fully aware that my family supports and tries to understand my condition as much as they can. I see them going to great lengths to ensure my safety and happiness. It makes me wonder whether I am just becoming a burden or placing extra and unnecessary stress in their lives. But my mom tells me constantly not to think this way. We help each other. We all have our struggles. We are here for each other. We take care of each other no matter what.
Mental health is an important yet invisible pillar of health. We should take care of it just like we take care of our physical health.
Thank you for this wonderful video.

Mental illness is still, sadly, a taboo topic in sg and i hope people dont blame the victims for their mental illness. No one wants to be labelled as a person with mental illness. It's something we cannot control so please stop victim blaming, saying that they "deserved it" and their "mentality is too weak" etc... I remember when i was first dignosed with depression. My parents, like typical asian parents, blamed me saying that "your sister have depression now you have depression? Why like that?" They talk as if i WANT this to happen to me. I do not want depression. You cant choose to accept or reject a mental illness if you have one. So i hope people are more open-minded about this because social support is very important in one's recovery❤ and to everyone who overcame their mental illness, you did a good job and to everyone still fighting, keep fighting and you will get there someday!! Dont give up❤

Thank you for the video. I had depression since puberty because of multiple factors out of my control. I didn't know it was a disorder, I was conditioned by my family that it was something wrong with my attitude or personality. I only sought help from professional counsellors at age 26/27 after suicidal thoughts returned so strongly. I had to do it without my family's knowledge because of their mindset "if you have a problem you must only keep it in the family and tell us only." But I can't because their reactions made everything worse, eg "Be grateful, last time we didn't have so much nice food.", "Smile more", "Because you didn't do ___ enough"... How can I confide in them? My counsellors from SAMH and Fei Yue were a godsend, they started me on my recovery journey. Now I'm so much better, but I still couldn't tell my family what happened. I wish I could and I wish they will understand. I'm so happy for these people that they have such supportive family members, what I've gone through is mild compared to them.

My mom suffered from schizophrenia. My father and my 3 other siblings refused to care for her when she suffered relapses because they had no idea how to help her... the first step is to see a psychiatrist but so many people are scared to do that for the stigma of finally admitting they or their family members are mentally unwell. The 2nd step is to ensure medical advice is followed, whether it's hospitalization or CONSISTANT oral/ intravenous medication. The last step is the most important - repeat follow up visits with your psychiatrist. It's a lifelong illness. Finally, patients themselves are clever enough to know whether someone really cares for them. And they will want to get treatment if you really care. Compassion and patience are what moves them.

I'm an occupational therapy student, and during my final year of diploma (2019) we were assigned to the psychiatric department. The opportunity to communicate and engage with clients in the psy ward may be one of the most unforgettable experience ever. We had to do a case study on a chosen patient, so we had the liberty to go through their folders and read through the history, plus sitting in meetings with psychiatrists giving explanation on new cases. It was definitely an eye opening experience, and I still remember the faces and names of some of the most memorable patients then. They were like our friends though being muchhh older than us haha the youngest we've had in the ward was a high schooler and reading through his folder made my heart cry for him cuz he had a dream but due to his condition he got warded, and he had to see other patients leave one by one as he stayed there. One morning, he even waved and yelled out me and my friend's name from the ward cuz he saw us walking into the hospital from the gate lol asking if we'll be going to the ward later 🤭

What he said about having wings and being shackled to the ground is almost like he was describing the hypomania and depression that can change your mood even over a matter of hours. Its very confusing having moodswings like that. Im really grateful that they decided to highlight this story. It means a lot to those, like me, suffering from this disorder.

Last year, I was admitted into IMH quite a number of times. I stayed at the normal ward (Ward 22B for women) and the Sayang Ward which is more expensive, but nothing was working. My mental health was deteriorating every day and I started to think of suicide. My mom decided to try moving me to the Mood Disorders Unit there after receiving advice from my cousin's husband who works at IMH. There's where I met Faith, who works at MDU.
Through the activities held there I really got better gradually, though I still got readmitted a number of times. I really like how Faith encouraged me during those trying times and I am eternally grateful to her and her coworker Jerlyn for helping me.
Side note: The food there is really yucky though so I always looked forward to my mom dabao for me haha xD

Jesus..I was dry faced at the beginning of the video..not now. I too have bipolar disorder. It is isolating..you do feel alone, even when you’re not physically alone..I do feel like a burden, always. I have an angel, he is my husband.

I hope i get the same thing when I finally "have" a caregiver.
Having bipolar disorder and alone in this journey is freaking hard. Not that I'm not thankful specially to my parents who support me no matter what, but knowing that everyday they're getting older and my mood swing is getting worse, it makes me want to go away and not look back to them
