- This motorcycle restoration video was a fun little project that kept me busy for a couple of months in the Hard Luck Garage. The bike was a 1976 Honda CR125 Elsinore that featured many rare vintage performance parts from the Flying Machine Factory (FMF), Fox Racing shocks, Pro-Fab swingarms, and Mikuni carburetors.
As usual for me, the bike started out in pieces and parts and was in pretty rough shape. The bike lived a hard life and required extensive repairs. The engine was rebuilt with new bearings and seals and a fresh bore. I also replaced a bent shift shaft and a damaged clutch basket. The frame had a couple of cracks and the normal drooping foot pegs that had to be weld repaired until they were level again.
Probably the nicest parts on the bike were the suspension components. The front forks have the FMF weld-on coolers and I replaced the pitted chrome fork tubes with nicer items found on Ebay. The last touch to the front end was a set of yellow FMF foam fork protectors. The rear suspension consisted of slightly longer travel air-adjustable Fox Shox. The cool shocks bolted to a strong chromoly steel Pro Fab swingarm which containted quality bronze swingarm bushings to keep the bike handling tight and straight on the track.
Engine improvements featured several more FMF products. The cylinder was ported and finished off with a trick FMF porcupine cylinder head. The down pipe FMF exhaust with the rather unusual silencer section appeared to be a rare single year FMF item. The pipe was originally painted red by the FMF company and I refrained from painting it to a more modest black with this restoration. The ported motor was also allowed to inhale more gas from a larger Mikuni VM round slide carburetor. Finally, the carb received its fuel from a light weight FMF RC Replica fiberglass gas tank. Originally, the tank leaked like a spaghetti strainer and I had to do several fiberglass repairs before I got it to stop leaking fuel.
The final touches on the bike was a beautiful Pro Tec spring-loaded chain guide. A rebuilt seat with new foam and cover. NOS high and wide DG
handlebars and a set of Full Circle vintage racing rims. Finally, I added numerous period correct vintage decals from Fast Guy Stuff .com.
I had 2 of those 76 CR's. The first one I got from FMF with everything already done to it. Both bikes had FMF pipes and porcupine heads. I have never seen a silencer like that before. Also you have your porcupine head on back words, the tall end goes towards the front of the bike. You did a great job on that bike and it brought back some great memories, Thanks for sharing it.
That which was ridden by Mart Smith, hallowed be he, has to be one of the coolest MX bikes on the planet, ever. Thank you, Flying Machine Factory.
Great looking bike, all class.
Bought one new when I was 13 with my lawn mowing money. It was a76 but this would have been 79. Dealer had two. One still in crate. That was a quick bike but only went about 60mph with the sprocket setup. My dad bought a 750 virago that year and I challenged him to a race down the street. Blew his door's until I hit top speed. What memories.
You did an awsome job. I really love seeing FMF parts on it
I got that bike when I turned 13. I rode it till the wheels fell off. It’s one of the things that started my love affair with motorcycles. It’s been going on for 50 years. I still can’t wait to see the new models come out every year. And if you haven’t seen the new Ducati dirtbike Look it up it looks nasty. Keep the shiny side up.
Looks great but those down pipes got smashed pretty quick. They went to snail pies and eventually snaked them thru the frame. Yep those were great times for us old guys.
Off the HOOK 😎🇬🇧👍 PRICELESS WORK OF ART.
I had a 1975 and restored it loved that bike wish I still had it.
Amazing restoration, beautiful.
Marty Smith days. Those were such awesome Moto days glad I got to live during that special time awesome bike sir and crazy women are fine just don’t marry them
Those are how they looked in my day!
They looked better than they do now!

Perfect.... bar the death footpegs 😊
I had the same FMF Porcupine head on mine...👍💥💥💥💥
Awesome build... 🇦🇺👍👍👍👍
Its not a complete video without starting it at the end. But nice bike.
I was at mid Ohio when Marty Smith beat Bob Hannah in both motos saw both passes was ten feet away for one of them on a tough table top first gear u turn. Awesome
素晴らしい、手間と時間、技術が凄い、私も82年XR200R大分レストアしましたが予算なく手放しました。いいね👍
Very nice job...
Wow!
I would like to see 1 of these engines fitted into an XR250 frame.
Nice job, but why did you not fire it up for us to hear?
Missing one critical detail. The sound!
I bought one of these bikes when I was a young teenager. It was a fast bike but I always bottomed the exhaust pipe out and kept breaking it off. Terrible design having it go under the frame.
Prediction ; It'll never see the dirt 😂
Beautiful I love it but the front forks colour would of been better in black but its a Beautiful bike
Needs big fat sprocket on back is all lol
lost me at the music
Beautiful ' but I really dont like the shock springs being blue' they clash'would be better black or red.
Could have been so much better, completely strip engine then paint, no hardware store bolts should be used, all spacers, etc.. should be billet
How much ?2

Bel restauro Honda. Una critica pero' la devo alla marmitta che il suo colore rosso stona e che a mio avviso era meglio lasciarla grezza oppure nera. Per il resto e' OK !!!!
