Rita Streich was the very first Zerbinetta I had ever heard, and still one of my favorites!

Isn't this from the full recording of the opera? Sounds like the same performance to me, but it's been years since I've heard it.
You're partly right. And there aren't many voice teachers, who can raise up real singer. But I think that this real "Bel Canto" technique is fading out. You can compare the singer singing on the same stage in the same opera: one of them uses still "Bel Canto", the other... well, something what "sounding a bit like an opera singer" as you wrote.
Just listen the recordings in the '30s, '40s, '50s. Back then everybody still sang with Bel Canto. Since then something went wrong...

If I may suggest you the book about my former teacher spoke to me. He taught me in the spirit of this book and now I'm trying to teach the same way. It is downloadable in many e-book format and very-very useful! And it is for free and legally :) The singer who wrote it was famous in her times, her name was Lilli Lehmann. Just simply google for it under "How To Sing by Lill Lehmann" and it will lead you to the site of the gutenberg org.
