That wasn’t the point, he was talking about how the perception of their classmates defines them in the social hierarchy and status. Peyton at her core is the loner and tortured artist BUT by others perception she would absolutely be a prom Queen. She’s a cheerleader dating one of the star basketball players and previously dated the other ones. Rachel is CONSIDERED “friendly” because she has a reputation for being that way despite us honestly not seeing too much of that in action and at her core she’s a deeply insecure girl who feels alone. That’s his point, internally we know who we are but in the concept of high school and social hierarchy who were perceived to be by the general population is what defines us in that context. That’s also why he says once everyone is out in the world in new environments they can change who they are to onlookers because it’s a blank slate. Rachel could be the loner, Mouth could be friendly, Brooke could be the geek, etc.
