i watched this doc yesterday.... had a big ol cry. i knew her very well... i found her hard to stomach in many ways because she was unkind a LOT when she was off her meds.. and i was too young to understand the nuances of her illness. i really appreciate your critique.. and love.. for this magnificent documentary.
Hal Hartley *and* Poly Styrene? On the same channel??? Two deeply formative artists to me growing up and into my twenties. What an amazing channel!
I loved this documentary so much. I made my (teenaged) kids watch it too and they both loved it.
Hey, thanks for all the great comments over the past few days - really makes a difference! I managed to get both Hal and Poly onto the same syllabus this semester - curious about how both will go over!
Thank you I will have to check this film out
And agreed about Poly's Translucence album! I went and checked it out after I saw to doc too and fell in love with it. She's got a good ear for hooks and it's weird and eclectic and warm and dreamy and just...yes. (It's got a lot of Blondie in it, actually, another top favorite band of mine, so...)
Glad you enjoyed it so much and it's great this is out there for more people to find her work. :)
Really great film - somehow both fierce and touching. I loved it!
"Punks" not "punkers".
