- 28-year-old mortar battery commander, Major of the "Azov" regiment Arsen Dmytryk, miraculously survived the attack on the Olenivka prison. Fellow prisoners from the row of beds he used to sleep - all died.
We've asked the interview to take place in his hometown of Berezhany in the Ternopil region. However, we arrived at the moment when Arsen was planning to go to Lutsk to attend the funeral of his brother in arms from "Azov", who died in the battle of Bakhmut. So we went on the road together.

I'm so astonished, he and many of his fellow soldiers made it out, and were actually returned. What amazing sacrifice they made in Azovstal, the medics especially being so resourceful with so little.
We were all watching and praying for them.
For the many thousands who died in Mariupol, may you rest in peace and be avenged.
Such a tragedy that this Russian mindset continues to stain our world. It isn't good for anyone.

The positivity, optimism, strength and cheerfulness of this young guy is amazing. He is a force of nature. He has seen such immense loss. Fighting at Azovstal for months and then to be ordered to surrender, surviving months in captivity. Then to lose another 50 or so in a bomb attack at Olenivka. I don't know if it's his faith that keeps him going, but he is made of some incredibly strong stuff. The Ukrainian men of this generation are truly incredible. Glory to the heroes. It is humbling to watch.

How the Major can go through so much and still hold a positive, well reasoned outlook is encouraging that Ukraine's fighters will survive this, will be able to get the support to come through this horror of a "special military operation". The Ukrainians are a strong people worth a great deal of respect and support by all European nations if not the whole world. They deserve to be aided in full to recover their sovereign integrity. As a veteran, and son of a highly decorated veteran, who knows good commanders when he sees one, I recognize not just your efforts, but your abilities and spirituality as well. We’re I able, I would come to Ukraine and fight fir you under your command. Unfortunately age and infirmity exclude this possibility.
