Same here lol. Trump's been saying he'll do this since the trail, didn't think he would bluff for a second considering he doesn't have to worry about a reelection.
How? India is already lowering costs for the US. The importer pays for the cost. You can say they will put it on the consumer but then you forget those jobs moved to the US off sets any increase on those imports.
Here’s how tariffs affect the country: For example, Europe has a 100% tariff on American-made cars, which makes it impossible to sell American cars in Europe and negatively impacts American car companies trying to expand their customer base there. The main point is that tariffs have a significant impact on countries. Even though Canada and Mexico don’t pay tariffs, they are still affected negatively; if they weren’t, they wouldn’t respond back. It’s both negotiation and trade war.
European Union on cars imports from U..S.A. is 10% (ten). U.S.A. tariffs import on cars from European Union is 2.5% and 25% (twenty five) percent on light trucks and commercial vehicles.
100%?? It’s 10%! What’s even worse than your blatant lie is people actually believe it! Also we print money out of thin air and import stuff, they actually HAVE to earn that money. Even with no 2.5% tariffs we’re probably getting the last laugh
Mexico, Canada, and China will all become trade partners and lower tariffs that they have on each other. America will be isolated after putting tariffs on everyone and will have no one to trade with. Maybe the American economy crashing form this will be the turning point that causes a communist revolution.
Hahahaha I always appreciate Brian’s updates and I think he does great work. But I do recall him saying this and that we shouldn’t take Trump seriously with every word. So this is hilarious now that Trump has followed through
There's a LOT of people complaining about 25% tariffs when these other nations already have Tariffs over 30% on consumer goods and upwards of 350% for Dairy. Seriously, enough is enough.
@higiniomorales459 Is it? Cause it seems more like shooting at someone and being surprised that they shoot back. Mexico and Canada both are at fault for letting the immigration problem get this bad, but at the same time if the criminal element is on both sides of the border, shouldn't the bad actors be the issue and not effect the people trying to go day by day. Same thing with the drug issue, if one country supplies it and the demand from the other is so high. It's unreasonable to flip it on a dime. It's not like DOGE is automatically flipping all the corruption over at once. These things take time
Exactly! Trump and his oligarch cronies will have their pockets well lined!!!! Tariffs are being paid by the regular guys, the American consumers. Everything will go at least 25% up!!! Talking down to groceries, up to cars!!!!
The non-wealthy lose, because the essentials take up more of their budget, relatively. Both wealth and non-wealthy get hurt from the essentials getting more expensive. However, the wealthy will get hurt relatively less. Arguably, when they're hurt relatively less, they're relatively winning. Equivalently, when we all lose, just one is losing less. However, this sets up the non-wealthy for failure. When we all of a sudden start winning, some will have that extra advantage, an earlier start from the starting line. It'll be the wealthy who'll have that extra advantage, and will then win relatively more. Where there's finite resources, losing relatively less is winning and winning relatively more is winning, and losing relatively more is losing and winning relatively less is losing. The question becomes: how much losing does it take until it causes significant human suffering for those losing; how much does the relative difference gap need to widen until it causes significant human suffering. At what point, if any, do we want to step in and intervene in this slow moving train wreck.

Companies are interviewing job candidates for 1-3 months and at the last interview they reject them or often ghost the candidate because they are not really hiring or there are very few office jobs available. The candidates spend days hours weeks months jumping through hoops for these companies to try and land a job, but nothing ever comes of it and two or three months have gone by and more rent and bills are due. Candidates end up in this situation for many many months which turn into a couple of years, and they lose their 401 K and savings and end up living with relatives but if they have no one to live with they end up homeless. The job market is very bad and companies are being very vindictive in having these long drawn-out interview processes that go on for months when they have no intention of hiring the person.
You can buy at a bottom if you are lucky but that bottom can go for a long time or a false bottom on the long run if the conditions that created it does not change over time.
Good chance we will now see price increases, yet they hardly ever go down. Nice that the everyday citizens life gets put in turmoil yet the wealthy won't notice.
Not just prices rising. Prices rising 25% or more to cover the cost of the 25% tariffs! How many people’s budgets can cover a 25% jump in the cost of nearly everything they buy? America is no longer a manufacturer of everyday items. We import almost everything. And if American goods become cheaper, American businesses will take advantage and price gouge until the cost of their products matches the price of expensive imports. In the end, Trump hates the American consumer.
Mexico and Canada are increasing their tariffs. I guess they decided they want to screw over their own citizens, too? Why would they increase tariffs if they ONLY hurt the country increasing them? I say ONLY because apparently tariffs only have one use, according to all the economists in the chat
The wealthy will get all the tariffs they pay from the customers plus a margin. And the government will get all the money, 100% of it, that the companies pay.
The current trade agreement between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, (USMCA) is set to be renegotiated in 2026. If these tariffs are not short-lived, Trump is almost certain to keep these tariffs up until the renegotiation period. His goal would be to put Canada and Mexico in such terrible financial conditions because of these tariffs, that a renegotiation of the USMCA would be in heavy favor of the United States, who Mexico and Canada rely on for most of their industry.
Seeing as Canada and Mexico haven't created the same consumption-led economy like the US, Trump's tariffs seem to make a bit more sense. I am too uninformed to say definitively that the US is the only consumption led economy, but currently I believe it to be so. To quote Per Bylund, poverty is the default but what causes prosperity? I personally believe it's economic decentralization, followed by politics. Something other nations haven't continued working on, and something the US has regressed in. Look up Chinese business leaders speaking up and against central authority.

How many market options do they have compared to what tRump has done to those markets? Canada didn’t retaliate against those countries. Seems tRump has just cut us off.
We have been paying the price for the last 75 years. This is why we have no manufacturing and a dying middle class. If Trump simply banner trade with both, we would be just fine. Those two countries would crumble.
I worked at GM plant early 2000’s. This plant announced that it MAY move to Mexico. GM rued to negotiate with the union to approve a 15% pay decrease over a 5y period to stay. The union said nope and we will sue. Well GM moved the plant. And we were left with no job. Next nearest plant was 150 miles and they didn’t have any openings. So I would of went from $31 a hour to $26 but still had a job
But if they didn't move then their competitors would have moved, undercutting their price, driving them out of business. In both cases you'd be out of work. On the other hand, if we prevented outside competition with a tariff, they'd get lazy, producing worse cars and raising their prices since they know their market is protected anyway. That hurts everyone else.
Trump keeps saying that Canada and Mexico are “treating us unfairly” because they have a trade deficit with us. As I recall, wasn’t it Trump who re-negotiated NAFTA? In that case, isn’t the current trade deficit the consequence of his bad “deal making”?
were you asleep the past 4 years? Mexico and Canada let tens of millions of illegal migrants pass through their country to invade the United States. This isn't about deficits, it's about making sure our neighboring countries aren't openly hostile to us.

Tariffs as a negotiating tactic is fine but I think the rest of the world knows his “art of the deal” tactic. Unfortunately, tariffs are a two-way street and the United States doesn’t produce or manufacture anything. I think this could be more of a problem. I’m not a fan of tariffs.

Don't hurt them directly. But putting tarrifs, the prices of goods go up and less people would buy their products. You should very much use your advise 😅😅
The country imposing the tariffs enjoys increased tariff revenue (currently like 2% of total US revenue is from tariffs), but it's a tax on the importers, not the exporters. The importers raise the price of imported goods to offset the tariff. Demand erosion occurs when consumers curtail purchases due to the higher cost, but erosion does not occur if the product has no viable competition and is deemed a needed purchase. Governments retaliate (knowing their own consumers will suffer) merely as a weapon to compel a stand-down. When Trump started a trade war with China during his first term, one of China's retaliatory tariffs made American soybeans prohibitively expensive compared to Brazilian soybeans. Farmers in the US were hurting until Trump started to give them money to hush up (with the money coming from tariff revenues). So, the new revenues from tariffs was used for damage control rather than paying for bombs to drop on Gaza, hence the national debt continued to rise unabated.
I’m a canadian business…we are currently finding area in USA to start manufacturing to avoid tariffs. My prime minister is not smart, he just gave me the go signal to move some of my operations to the USA. Trudeau putting a 25% tariff on US goods... Well we're still at a 7% discount on a 1 to 1 basis. The currency conversion is currently 4¢ USD to 1 MXN. This means something that costs 1,000 Mexican Pesos only costs $40 USD. Any Mexican product/service purchased with USD is at a 96% discount. Mexico and Canada retaliating with their tariffs is literally all bravado. The Mexican President is MUCH smarter than Trudeau with her measured response.
I can tell you a FACT that the highest leadership within the HVAC manufacturing companies did not expect this to happen until April at the earliest. I had a conversation on Friday afternoon, that even coming to the realization it was eminent, at most a 15% tariff was expected. I suspect 80% of all Air Conditioning and Heating equipment, parts, and supplies come from Mexico. Congratulations, your HVAC replacement or repairs will likely cost you 50% more than it did a month ago… instantly!
The metal tariffs Trump did during his first term in 2018 I believe cost me an additional $5000 on a metal roof. Was going to be $10000-12000 but materials went up so much after the tariff, the roof ended up being $17,000 plus.
I’m ok with that if it means we get better products. Look at the situation with Toyota. They moved manufacturing to Mexico and now reliability for their V6 engines is in the toilet and the vehicles are way more expensive than ever before. So many auto companies are doing this and we wonder why no one can afford a new vehicle. I’d rather spend an extra 5 grand on a car that isn’t going to need major repairs in 3 years.
@ I agree with you, but this isn’t just Toyota. Semi-truck parts are also subpar after the warranty expires they die. It seems like quality has declined in everything, including Boeing, which recently faced quality issues. So, the question is, why is this happening? Are they cutting corners and passing the cost onto consumers? Btw. Why are they cutting quality? I think inflation is the root cause. They need to make products and not increase prices too much due to inflation they cut quality but keep the price stable.
says the guy who suddenly cares about prices being expensive, even though everything has gone up about 75% and you voted again for the guy who made that happen. You are textbook delusional and no one takes you seriously.
@JuliusCaesar797 It's going to hurt the Automotive industry way more than the Avocado industry. Americans are already struggling, who'd want to pay a 25% tax on top of what they already paying.
Yeah, the US won't buy Canadian lumber when it has a 25% penalty; US lumber will be much cheaper which means logging companies will hire more people to fill the available demand. Same with mining, etc.
I see this as a wake up call. The tariffs with shuffle a reset on how things are managed. I would imagine this is why the other country’s care about it and why Mexico won’t just set up protection on there side of the border. Mexico is run by criminals and for Canada yes, they as cool and fine but they do have a lot of raw resources that have been problems with USA for a long time. Trucker rally’y and all of that noise. Wtf does Canada even need all those resources for? It’s a huge waste of potential. Resource war is going to show us who needs and who doesn’t. This is much better than Russia going for nord 2 pipe line with actual war.
Corps and criminals in suits run the states also. Look at Healthcare and many other industries. Its probably worse than most countries including our neighbors.
If Tariffs are so bad, then explain why the United States was *the most prosperous* during the period of time where the government was FUNDED primarily by Tariffs, with ZERO income tax?
@@GrandChessboard The Tariff Act of 1789 was the first national source of revenue for the United States. Alexander Hamilton was a strong supporter of the act, believing it would protect American manufacturing and promote industrial growth. Furthermore, The United States has been the world's largest economy by GDP since around 1890. Finally, in 1913 the Federal Reserve Act was created. This coincides with the first implementation of the "income tax" in the United States. In other words, the US enjoyed it's largest "boom" in growth during the period where Tariffs were the primary source of revenue for the U.S. government, coinciding with the industrial revolution which occurred between 1876-1900. If you want the best growth and prosperity, tariffs are the most efficient way for the government to collect revenue, because you perform the dual function of revenue collection and protecting American industry. It's how America became the most prosperous nation. The UAE for example, does not have an income tax. The income tax is a direct unapportioned tax, which the founders specifically did not want implemented, which is why they wrote it into the constitution that such taxes would be illegal, and in order to even begin having such a tax would require a constitutional amendment.

The main flaw in the narrative that US citizens will be the ones paying and hurting because of the tarrifs... Really, then why would Canada implement tariffs back?? So their response to bad tariff policy is to do the same damage to their own economy? Can't have it both ways. Tariffs are about closing the trade deficit. Not about lowering the cost of a few items
Tariffs kill demand for the product produced in that country. It's not like you can't bypass the surcharge. You simply purchase similar product that does not have a tariff piled on top of it. Drink American beer. Purchase American Maple syrup. Use Chilean hot sauce.

Ford is one of the biggest automakers in Europe.

You must be the poor guy👌

How many people’s budgets can cover a 25% jump in the cost of nearly everything they buy? America is no longer a manufacturer of everyday items. We import almost everything. And if American goods become cheaper, American businesses will take advantage and price gouge until the cost of their products matches the price of expensive imports.

And, Trump doing that is clear extortion, intimidation, and just plain unnecessary evil.
Seeing as Canada and Mexico haven't created the same consumption-led economy like the US, Trump's tariffs seem to make a bit more sense.
I think Trump just wants Canada and Mexico to take the drug and illegal immigration seriously. They'll negotiate.

Going to WAR was not part of the plan
There’s companies already moving there businesses from Canada and Mexico because of the US
They've been skating by on super low tarffis for decades.
Kind of like 🥚s :(
Such stupidity- just hurting ourselves
Four more years of this. Buckle up.
The metal tariffs Trump did during his first term in 2018 I believe cost me an additional $5000 on a metal roof. Was going to be $10000-12000 but materials went up so much after the tariff, the roof ended up being $17,000 plus.

Why is it that other countries put tariffs on us it’s smart but if the USA puts tariffs on them we are jerks. Crazy
This is the same thing as to increase sales taxes by 25% on consumers. Get ready guys your paychecks will feel even more weak
Only if you're weak and buy Canada and Mexico products.
Prepare for much harder times. Obviously trump doesn't see that. The costumer is the only person who pays in America
People who are ok with this are delusional.
Like more than two genders? Or hiring based on skin color? 😅😅😅
@@vmcr right, whatever are they going to do without avocado toast. Orange man bad
says the guy who suddenly cares about prices being expensive, even though everything has gone up about 75% and you voted again for the guy who made that happen. You are textbook delusional and no one takes you seriously.
@JuliusCaesar797 It's going to hurt the Automotive industry way more than the Avocado industry. Americans are already struggling, who'd want to pay a 25% tax on top of what they already paying.
People complaining about it online are virtue signaling and have no understanding of macro-economics
If Tariffs are so bad,
then explain why the United States was *the most prosperous* during the period of time where the government was FUNDED primarily by Tariffs, with ZERO income tax?
Which years were those?
@@GrandChessboard the ones followed by the Great Depression! 😂
