That's how I knew she was a goner! The expression of unsure-ness & sadness on her face with the music? I knew it! I was praying that she'd retreat bcuz even Daemon told her that he & Carraxes can't face that big c*nt alone in episode 1! She should've known but it's already written in the book that she must die so she had to go thru 😭💯

I never thought I would shed a tear for a creature such as a dragon..but after Meleys died and Rhyaens locked eyes with her in that moment I couldn't hold back
I love how the show is displaying the connection the seasoned riders have with their dragons. When meleys looked back at her like, "we goin for s'more?"
And she smiled as if to say "oh, all right. Let's go get em". I love it!

I always she a tear when a dragon dies.
I knew how it went beforehand from reading the wiki, but Rhaenys, my favorite character since season 1, episode 1, evoked such sadness in her final moments.
Sunfire was like lost puppy trying to defend himself
Showed Aegon and Sunfyre's inexperience against the formidable and fast Meleys.
Aegon went at it like as if it was a joust. Lol.
But sunfire hug with aegon is cute tho, truly a puppy type dragon

Daemon telling her to team up with him to kill Vhagar seems like a really good offer in this scene.
Yeah, well, Rhaenys proved to be the lowest IQ Black member since late S01.
So, Vhagar is a sneak attacker. That's how she killed Arrax and now Meleys. She disappears - hide her fat a$$ and then sneak upon you.
Well she blended with the foliage surprisingly well. 😂
That means she is cowered Dragon 😂
All griping aside, there is a logic to this. Vhagar has been taken on countless military campaigns and flew with some of the most notorious dragons in all of Westerosi history. You don't survive fighting wild dragons and armies who hurl big spears into the air without learning a trick or two.
Plus each time she's gotten the jump on someone she's always used some natural feature of some kind. First she used cloud cover and here she seems to have used the cliffs to obscure herself. So there does seem to be some degree of method to her sudden ambush tactics

@user-qg9kn5ev8d a dragon the size of a castle that can only win by sneaking up on her opponents. Just keep your eyes on the flying castle and you'll be good. We're talking about dragons that can see things from miles in the air. This whole vhagar hid and swooped up without making a sound is terrible. Are we supposed to act like the soldiers didn't hear vhagars wings flapping from a mile away earlier in the episode lmao.
@@tyler-hp7oq In fact I doubt that you can. I' don't thing you'll be able to recognize the sound of "flapping wings" amidst all the shouting, fighting and screaming. A lot of things are happening simultaneously in a battle, it's very easy to miss a thing or two.
Meleys really lived up to her title as the Red Queen, one of the fastest and most fearsome of the dragons in The Dance. RIP.
I think the slight grin on Rhaenys’ face when she sees Aegon and Sunfyre shows her overwhelming confidence in Meleys, as if Sunfyre poses no threat at all. Indeed, Meleys makes quick work of Sunfyre. Despite the “help” from Vhagar, Meleys has already severely wounded Sunfyre while only losing a single horn from her head, by the time Vhagar shows up.
And when Meleys faces Vhagar, it’s worth noting that despite the size difference, when the dragons lock claws and spiral to the earth, it’s Vhagar who is thrown to the ground while Meleys flies away. I thinks it’s truly astounding how fearsome Meleys is and I just know Rhaenys was so proud of her. They did a fantastic job with this battle.

In the books, meleys caught sunfyre by the the neck and sunfyre caught meleys by the same but then Aemond shows up from above and descended upon The Red Queen and tores up her left wing. Causing the two to fall. It's just that quick. So for the tv show, they had to make Rhaenys have a "girl boss farewell" style
After seeing the episode, none of Meleys or Rhaenys deserve their titles.

I like how since Vhagar is the slowest dragon, they turned her into an ambush predator.
That part… she fat & slow at this point. So it’s always a sneak crunch/much for her
She’s like the T-Rex from Jurassic Park in that regard, her sheer size and massive wings also causes a lot of wind displacement which would naturally mess up smaller dragons flight.

That's because she is fat and old and other dragons are fast. The only way to fight them back is to hide and attack unexpectedly.
That death spiral in the sky symbolizes the Dragon family cannibilizing itself.

they studied into how birds of prey fight. The entire battle symbolizes how horrible it is when dragons fly to war, and yes partly how the houses are ripping at each others throats.
That literally means the dance of the dragons. The dragon dance throughout the night in the morning no one survived
Why do I feel more saddened by the dragon's deaths. Could not give less of a shit about Aegon getting roasted but Sunfyre didn't deserve to go out like that.

I feel bad for Sunfyre. Those cries he made after he caught himself from crashing- he just wanted out. Only to get ripped into again.

I find sunfyres maiming to be one of the most tragic aspects of this episode. He was too small and hes only doing what his rider tells him.
We also shouldve gotten more tome with sunfyre: we barely get to see him, except for in this episode, and now his glorious golden scales are fucked

I love how they used the flame liquid instead of blood for their wounds in this battle. Really reminisces how Viserion was injured since in both scenarios the dragons were recently using fire breath. Also the way every wound let out smokes like their innards were still burning hot

@@Pop-wl8yg It could have been blood, but if you look carefully at when sunfire is flying over the soldiers and sunfire's blood falls on them, the soldiers look like they are in pain. It could be that their blood is just hot af, or its igniting fluid used to breathe fire.

I love how the dragons physically dance in the sky at the 1:34 mark. It reminds me of how birds of prey will literally glide almost as if they're dancing when attacking each other. The showrunners clearly took inspiration from that.

same, expecting meleys was remianing on highly alert tho... was expecting she and Rhaenys both killed during fight in the air, not from sneaky ambush that they showed no chance. this combo is known for being one of the best team with tenacity and strongest bond, indeed was expecting it to show these during their dance with vhagar.

This is the saddest dragon death so far, and I tortured myself replaying countless times that last look Meleys gave Rhaenys.
Now I'm sure if craxes and meleys attached together vhagar wouldn't stand a chance... They could have easily won

She lost track of her enemy and/or did not verify the kill. That mistake cost her and her dragon their lives.
Technically her compassion dooms her and her dragon. She could've roasted the entire Green family in season 1 but did not. She didn't confirm the kill here either. But I have to say its fucking silly that I watched several scenes of Vhagar stumbling and struggling to even move suddenly get assassin kills like this. How on Earth is a dragon that heavy and cumbersome just hiding behind a castle and flying with agility like that? I'd expect more battling and eventually winning because she is massive and can withstand more attacks. Her gigantic and powerful jaws getting a good bite ends the battle. This ninja stuff is just silly.
@@mbovb006 No, her stupidity doomed her. She didn't roast the Green family "out of compassion" right after she killed 200-300 innocent people in one go for effect. Then, her advice got Lucerys and Arrax killed, and it cost them the Baratheon alliance.
She wasn't hiding behind a castle, the castle is in a cliff and she obviously was positioned on the cliff face and as Meleys flew towards and over the castle she wouldn't have seen her until it was to late. @@mbovb006
It's worse than that. She definetly knew she didn't kill either of them and still wasn't careful enough to pay even the least bit of attention to where the 500 ton monstrosity suddenly vanished to.
If not Rhaenys, then at least you'd expect Meleys to keep tabs on where Vhagar is.

It was a real strange move, meleys was flying still when vhagar fall into the ground. How did she lose sight of vhagar? How did vhagar manage to hide that quick, like a goku teleport? The point of the fall and the point of the sneak attack where too far apart, and vhagar is a slow dragon, even to take flight when she is injured

Sunfyre was getting attacked from all angles the poor thing. But I love how it shows the difference when an inexperienced dragon rider enters battle. The dragon will follow its riders commands, and seemingly when there is no command there is no coordination. So Sunfyre didn’t know what to do here and just got flung around like a peace of meat
I knew this episode was coming and i still wasn't ready. Rhaenys was incredible and it really showed the high risk, high reward, when dragons fight.
Same way as Lucery's and Arrax's death... sneak attack. Shows that Vhagar is an extremely experienced dragon. Gets easy kills the moment the victim thinks that has reached safety.
Big brain move by Aemond. Usually a heavy dragon would want the height, but aemond does exactly the opposite to throw off rhaenys. Smart af honesyly
You can tell who more experience with their dragon fire is not effective to kill a dragon you need to do physical damage
fire can be the deadliest damage also... just breath fire into there mouth and they literally will explode inside...

You need to break the dragon's neck, wing or belly as per the books.

1:34 love seeing the "Dance of Dragons" visualized. Especially this shot of the soldiers looking up at the fight in the sky in awe and fear. This is how legends are made and they're definitely going to write songs about this (if they lived). top 3 visuals of GoT.
1:46 the moment when Rheneys tells Meleys to attack for the second time, and Meleys understands they will die, but she looks back at her rider as if to say “Let’s do this momma” 😭
The thing that is completely illogical, is that any normal rider, any of us, if we were to fight like this, would never turn eyes away from our enemy. Imagine flying away from fallen vhagar and not constantly turning your head back to see whats going on. By not doing it you would lose battle orientation, and endanger your life, which unless you are really stupid, you would understand. Watching your enemy, even if you cant see through smoke, you still look for movement, which you would obviously see. For me, cinematically this was 10/10. Battle realism, 3-4/10.
That’s the worst, anyone in the situation will take advantage of Vaghar who crash when we saw Meleys was already above.
Oh you have a strong and fast dragon ? Why I shouldn’t fly low with no view against a beast like Vaghar ? Also anyone here will mapping with not problem after the first fly and will know there’s only one place Vaghar could hide if she’s not on the field or in the air and it’s the castle and the cliff. Stupid plot
This scene was heartbreaking first with the unexperienced Sunfire who was more like a puppy to Eagon than a dragon , and the way he was screaming in pain and trying to just hide and defend himself and his master brought tears to my eyes and the death of Meyless and Rheyness made me literally sobe for like half an hour , I felt the pain of the dragons as if they were reel creatures and it really broke my heart so from now on I'm not watching any dance of the dragons scenes, because mentally I'm on the edge and i don't need something to push me forward.

Judging by the reaction of those soldiers at 0:35, I guess dragon blood is hot AF.
In most fictional stories dragons blood is very hot so not really a surprise
@@DarioDenny I know dragon blood was hot in the books. When Drogon was speared in Daznak’s Pit, his blood partially melted the tips. Daenerys rips out a spear after she climbs him. The tip was half melted and glowing hot. So we know the internal temperature of a dragon is at least 450 C (900 F), because that's when iron starts to glow red.
I just don’t remember if they ever made this aspect clear in the TV shows.

Caraxes will be jump scare user, attacking both from side of the sun and side of Aemond blind eye.
It I think it will be the other way around actually.
If rhaenyra is the main charecter of the dance then sunfyre is the main dragon of the dance.And he is here, a dragon with a charecter arc. Hope they don't ruin sunfyre's story in the show

Meleys was originally Alyssa Targaryen’s dragon. Alyssa was Viserys’ mother. Meleys was at least 60-70 years old during the dance.

in the books, she only had the initial chance to. Before sighting the dragons. Meleys was the fastest dragon alive. Once she engaged with Sunfyre, Vhagar just collapsed from above and she had no chance.

@hafsahassan394 they are more human in the show. Maybe Rhaenys couldn't bear to leave the men that were fighting for their cause whilst they cower in Dragonstone. Rooks Ridge was like the 4th castle Cole assaulted in his campaign. Dumb yes, but it can be a factor.

Meleys REALLY could have killed Vhagar. I have always known from the start about the books, but this time I couldn’t hold back from crying.
She was my favourite dragon and her rider being the most wise of all.
Not really Vhagar is tank and that's when you realize Vhagar was the smallest out of the original three during the Conquest. Meleys honestly just pushed Vhagar into the ground and flew away Meleys knew that her best bet was agility 1v1 based on pure strength absolutely not had Rhaneys just fled when she took out Sunfyre she would've survived. But she went out like a champ and I'll give credit to her. Meleys is easily the fastest dragon however at the end in terms of brute force the dragon had nothing against Vhagar.

Size in fights do matter even with dragons there are weight classes in the UFC for a reason. We saw how stupidly Aegon went head on and attacked Meleys which is team blacks largest current dragon larger than Caraxes and the bigger dragon used brute force and made swift work of them. Had Aegon baited Meleys into a chase and had Vhagar attack her from behind than Sunfyre may of had a chance and got of the fight unscathed. But lets be real here Vhagar is 3 times Meleys size when it comes down to it Vhagar will win. That's like saying we have the worlds strongest man and put him aganist a polar bear and when polar bears stand up that can get it up to 10 feet or 12 feet sure the worlds strongest man may put up a fight but ultimately the bigger and stronger creature wins when it comes down to brute force. If Meleys kept her distance and used her dragons speed to manuever and try burning Aemond that would practically render Vhagar useless but thats really the only way I see Meleys winning against Vhagar by burning their rider.

I thought it was by mistake that vhager burned aegon but last scene cleared everything. It was pre planned. I was feeling pity on aegon to be very honest. First, he never wanted to be a king in the beginning but everybody forced him and now, when he wanted to be a king and get treated like that, even small counsel disrespect him.
Sunfyre was his dragon egg he had at birth so they naturally bonded with each other. Aegon was way to in over his head when battling rhaenys and meleys, who had much more age and battle experience than they had.
And aegon wasn't thinking like a leader should have, he made several mistakes especially pissing off your strongest ally aemond and vhagar, who are literally the only things that are keeping you from closer to the grave.
It's also his fault his council is bad he got rid of his best support, his grandfather Otto as hand of the king and gwayne his uncle as lord commander. He should have waited and brought daeron and tessarion to have more dragons since rhaenyra still had at least 8 too their 3 since helaena isn't going to ride dreamfyre ever. So I feel bad but a little bit, aegon was very foolish.

@@nicksmithnutmilk we've never seen sunfyre hatch so it could be either place I believe it's in the red keep bc the egg daemon gave too rhaenyra on dragon stone in s1 I believe that egg was indeed sunfyre and we saw that it was still an egg on dragonstone so when they brought the egg back too Kings Landing it must've hatch and had bonded with a toddler aegon.
@@nicksmithnutmilk aegon doesn't live on dragonstone so he wouldn't have any way too bond with them and dreamfyre was the only older dragon that was in the dragon pit and I think dreamfyre wouldn't have wanted too bond with aegon and naturally felt a more bond with helaena.
Rhaenys took her chance, and she lost. As far as she knew, Aegon and Sunfrye were dead or dying. She tangled with Vhagar and managed to get her to the ground relatively unharmed. Not only that, there's no way Vhagar could catch up with Meleys. She could have retreated back to Dragonstone, but she didn't. If there was even the slighest chance she could kill Vhagar, the war would be over at that point, even more so if she killed Aemond too. She turned around to look for Vhagar, hoping she was still on the ground. Unfortunately, Vhagar was back in the sky and all it took was one good hit to end the fight then and there. She took a chance, and lost. God speed Rhaenys.
How did Rhaenys not see Vhagar hiding behind that cliff ?! After the first clash, Vhagar landed on ground while Rhaenys was still airborn.

Great scene! But making Vhagar, the biggest dragon in the world kill her by another sneak attack? Seems kind of forced. In the sky with all that cloud cover it made total sense, but here, even with all that smoke her gigantic ass isn't hiding, especially not with how they made Rooks Rest. It's a teeny castle, Vhagar was standing proud above Stormsend's curtain wall. I know Rhaenys had to die here, but narratively speaking I think it would have been just as satisfying to watch Rhaenys, the most experienced dragonrider lose after an extremely hard fight, and for Aemond to use that to bolster his bravado in the coming campaign. Knowing what comes later I feel like it would pay off when he has the wind taken out of his sails.
Very much agree. It started off well.. rhaenys took a dive under Vhagar, locked with her so she can’t snap her neck n they tried to kill the rider by breathing fire…
But that ending, just didn’t make sense. But it is what is it is, n this episode was fire 🔥.

Meleys + Caraxes vs Vhagar would have absolutely been a victory for team black.
Yes, whatever asset Vhagar brings, stealth is not one of them. You can't hide such a large dragon behind battle lines. Unless Rhaenyra is too dumb to have any scouts or messengers. Many would have seen Vhagar flying from Kings Landing hundreds of miles to Rook's Rest.
It’s not forced. It’s because she is battle hardened that she knows that speed isn’t on her side and she knows about the blind spots of the other dragons and the riders. It shows experience.

vhagar is pretty vulnerable when he doesn't have the surprise attack going for him, meleys did a number on him...thats 2 times he needed to sneak up on a smaller dragon to defeat it. meleys heads up could have been fast enough to defeat the big guy...which makes me conclude that once vermithor arrives on the scene, he likely handles vhagar as he's nearly as big as vhagar as well.

Its honestly getting real annoying. Some changes and additions I am irked at, but this scene doesn't deserve it. I keep seeing comparisons to the animated Rooks Rest, and i enjoyed it too, but the budget would be IMMENSE to recreate it. I did like how we saw the dragons emotions more in the show.

Anyone else feel TERRIBLE for sunfyre and aegon?! Sunfyre is just a baby 😭 and how painful it must’ve been for Aegon hearing Sunfyre scream like that and bleed all over the field.
The only issue I have with this fight is the fact that Vhagar, as big as she is, managed to sneak up on Meleys.
Her wings flapping through the air alone would be enough normally to alert anyone of her presence but I guess the plot dictated that she was kill Meleys.
I mean I’m not surprised that this was the result of the fight as it’s exactly what happened in the book.
Though, I do wonder what would’ve become of Vhagar if Sunfyre weren’t there.
While Vhagar is a more experienced dragon when it comes to conflict, her rider isn’t. Aemond up until this point was a tourney knight in terms of battle experience. And he’s never fought a dragon (Luc’s dragon doesn’t count at all).
But Meleys? I don’t recall her having much if any battle experience, but her rider? She’s mastered dragon rider long before Aemond was even conceived. And is the swiftest dragon there ever was in Westeros. I honestly believe that Rhaenys would’ve won that fight had she gotten there after Vhagar.
Personally, if I was Rhaenyra though, I would never have sent Rhaenys to Rook’s Rest, while yes it was a castle right across the bay from Dragonstone, as Daemon himself stated, Dragonstone is easily defended. The Greens would never plan a siege on Dragonstone.
I would’ve sent Rhaenys to Harrenhaul. That way I could ensure a response from Daemon on his progress with assembling an army. Plus if any surprise attack were to happen, Vhagar or Sunfyre wouldn’t stand a chance against Meleys and Caraxes. Vhagar may hold her ground for a bit, and may even maim one of the dragons, but ultimately would not survive that fight.
From there, the only dragon that the Greens would have that’s currently being used would be Sunfyre, Dreamfyre in my opinion does not count as she’s never used in the dance. In fact she dies in the dragon pit according to the book.
And Aegon was torn apart practically by Meleys, I can only imagine how quickly Daemon would end a fight between the two. Plus, even if Dreamfyre were used, by that point Rhaenyra has more dragons: Syrax (Her’s), Meleys, Caraxes, Moon Dancer, and Vermax. All with riders.
Not to mention the riderless dragon Vermithor who is nearly as big as Vhagar along with three wild dragons (only two are mountable) and dragon eggs along the way).
Best of all, by that point, she wouldn’t have to even use them. The Greens stand no chance without Vhagar and their allies know this to be true and most would soon rally behind Rhaenyra.
Ultimately, Rhaenyra’s hesitancy and inaction was her downfall. She had every advantage. Vhagar was the real threat the entire time, had Meleys and Caraxes stayed together, Vhagar wouldn’t stand a chance in any conflict she was flown into. And that fear alone would delay the Greens from making any drastic move.
Rhaenyra’s council in some ways was right, they had to act quickly rather than as late as Rhaenyra did. And seeking peace was a fool’s errand by that point the King wanted blood and Aemond and Cole were plotting their own strategies of attack. Peace was never possible and the time Rhaenyra wasted is what cost her the war.
When the blacks have so many dragons - why do they keep sending 1 dragon out at a time when Vahgars the size of a skyscraper??
