Nice start to the garden, Modern Refugee! We have to wait until about the 22nd of May to put things in the ground. But we have lots started in starting pots ready to be transplanted!
Here in south Louisiana we just harvested potatos and onions. For us the hardest part is saving seed potatos. No basements here. Garden is looking good. Y'all have a blessed day.

Good morning MR, I harvested some rhubarb and thawed strawberries from the freezer and made 9 half pints of rhubarb strawberry sauce, a little jammy but not too thick. Thanks for the garden stroll. Have a blessed weekend.
A person can pick up extra tools at auctions, usually at a reasonable price.

Finding old good American made tools at garage sales is the way to go. Have some spare handles on hand too.
I just stopped at a couple rummages this morning and one of them had a ton of old axe heads, canning jars, all kinds of neat and useful things. So yes, spare handles is a must!
Edit: or, better yet, know how to make new handles 😉 give a man a fish, teach a man to fish!
@@katie7748 You might be my dream girl, ha ha ha! I wonder if every region has a type of wood that would be suitable for use as handles of if one has to stock up on Hickory or Oak . Hand tools like a wood plane or a spoke shave would be good as well.

Yeah, I’m not buying anything this year, just saved. Haven’t planted yet because we’re still getting frost warnings (northern MN), but soon. My strawberries are way behind yours, but coming in good anyway. ❤

Second comment for a laugh. I had to transplant the catnip and a neighbors cat came over (as usual) and was in a panic because the Kitty Crack wasnt there. It found it and was happy again.

Looking good! Seed saving is something I need to work on. Ive had some luck with melons and squash. I tried a similar bundle of the onions you showed and mine look about like that so I'm encouraged. I'm a lousy onion grower😂

We took in a couple in February. They helped around the farm, but they broke nearly every tool handle we had. The new hoe needs to be sharpened. I need to get some garlic like yours. I've tried other kinds and they just don't like my area. My planted potatoes look good, but one in a bucket is blooming! Have you discovered hot cherry peppers? I got some from the local U-Pick last year and saved the seeds. Not one germinated! I found wild onions last year and saved the seeds. They grew and are going to seed now. Little pearls. I had transplanted field corn to the west side of the house. Then we had a hard short storm. Some of the corn was washed away. Some Empress tree limbs landed on my clothesline. I cut it up for firewood and have the limbs to add to the burn pile. No idea where my squash and beans seeds ended up. If I find them sprouting, I'll move them back to the corn. The idea is to shade the west side of the house with the corn stalks and I prefer field corn. My Early Girl tomatoes are still alive in spite of the leaf spot. Bacteria? Fungus? The Creole plants are doing much better. My Rutgers seeds didn't sprout, so I bought 2 more plants for buckets. The English peas say it is too hot for them so I'm letting the last pods dry for next year. I have one collard going to seed and several turnip green plants. I did get marigolds to sprout. They will go around my tomatoes to protect them from bugs. Doesn't it feel good to watch things grow.

Enjoyed seeing your garden. We have planted some salad items and are looking at adding winter squash possible in a new garden bed.( My husband was able to repurpose a very large "box" that held construction items. )
Good video. I like to see what others are growing/planting. How they save seed for the next year, over winter plants, etc. I live in Michigan and it’s nice to see what works or doesn’t work when it comes to planting. Thanks
You mentioned the fish guts for your apple tree- I bought a fish cleaning table at cabelas and my husband cleans the fish by our small 5 variety apple tree, It has produced apples 2 years now. Our problem is knowing when to pick them. But we had good eating apples last year.

Gm. Trying same this year also. I dont have a big garden 20 x 20. Trying potato seed in feed bags dog food bags. So i can plant more in space i have. Saw they are coming up too !! Good tip for people w no space in ground. Ill let you know how they do.

Not really, what ever I can find on sale.
Early is a fine line not to get frost.
There are ways to mitigate frost, mulch, covering with hot caps & keeping the soil around the plants well hydrated all help.

Get two, they are great to have. Being high carbon steel you can also use them to strike a spark for a fire as well. Using local quartzite or chert.

Yes, we seen them for a bit, but it got cloudy.
I planted potatoes. Problem was, I didn't know how to care for them afterward. Do you soak the potatoes in water then let them dry out to 1/2 inch below the surface before watering again or only water the top of the soil to a certain depth? It's all a learning curve.
I plant the potatoes 4 inches deep. I work in compost in each hill. Potatoes are a heavy feeder or nitrogen. So as much organic matter you can give them the better. Potatoes like loose soil with a slightly acidic ph. Small potatoes usually mean not enough nitrogen.

@@user-si8vt5gv1h potatoes like to be damp. I water every other day in hot weather. When the leaves start to yellow when the potatoes are maturing I stop watering.
i'm anxious to see what your garlic turns out like, i have a variety folks really like down here. bigger bulb, easy pealing, last pretty well[ still have some in the bowl] [mary jane garlic] hardneck . we will pickle the scapes with a simple hot brine with pickle seasoning. i like them on my salads. if you add a contact email. i'll reach out and send up some really good garlic for seed and try. july 4 is the harvest date +/-
my mother likes throwing onion s in her strawberry bed, that works really well in ohio. we had her basement dug out and the dirts still high at the base of the house. she will throw onions in there . a place that gets the sheeting rain and watered occasionally. it works really well.
when i see a fruit tree failing, i will get a skidloader bucket of pooled manure pea/tea off the cow lot and dump that at the base of a declining fruit tree. we have to remember that a orchard might be 40 years old and nutrients do decline. there maybe a reason the tree is dying back. i've added a few more years to cherry and apple trees
Everyone should plant a garden even if in the city w a tiny space 🪴 my tomato’s did awesome last year.
