No, the games are not related to the film rights. When it comes to everything BUT films, Marvel still has the rights to Spider-Man. Video games, merch, etc, that's all Marvel still
Sony doesn't own the video game rights to Spider-Man. Marvel owns it and they can license it out to whoever they want. That's why you see Spider-Man in a lot of video games like Marvel Rivals, Midnight Suns, Marvel Snap, Ultimate Alliance 3, etc.
Sony will never give up Spiderman, what they should probably do going forward is to focus on solo project of other spiderman variants (spiderman noir, spiderman Gwen starring Haliee Stienfield, or even Spiderman 2099 with Oacar Isaac)
Sony has a lease on the Spider-Man film rights, they do not own them. Sony has a contractual obligation to make and release a Spider-Man film within a certain time frame or the rights revert back to Marvel. Sony will not let that happen and will make shit Marvel movies just to keep the clock ticking to keep the lease of the rights to them.
Honestly at this point the only way Marvel gets those rights back is if Sony decides to sell their movie division entirely. Spiderman is one of their only movie ips that actually makes money.
Part of me wants Sony to just sell the rights back to Marvel and stop making these godawful movies, the other part of me just has morbid curiosity about what they’ll create next
Sony has the rights to films only. Literally everything else Spider-Man Marvel/Disney can do without them. They’re not even responsible for the rights of the Spider-Man games on PlayStation. They are on those consoles due the preexisting relationship, not ownership.
If Sony ever had the guts to give the Spider-Man film rights back to Marvel, I have a suggestion of what could fill the void for Sony… Infamous. That’s their original IP. Adapt that PlayStation game into a film franchise and stop desperately clinging onto Spider-Man.
How are Sony's movie profitable if every other movie they made ( besides the Venom trilogy) bombed? Sony's SM universe is dead and they think taking a three year hiatus is going to change things? LOL it is not and it is time for Marvel to get Spidey back.
Venom- $856m, Venom 2- $506m, Venom 3 $472m, Morbius- $167m, Madame Web- $100m, Into the Spider-verse- $384m and Across the Spider-verse- $690m. Also... did you not watch the video?
it took them six years to make $700 million. If Disney offered them $7 billion right now Sony would jump at it. It would take them 60 years to make that much at this rate.
Yeah Sony would jump for that sum but you and everyone knows that Disney can't and would not offer that kind of money. But who knows maybe in tbe future Apple or Amazon would buy the rights from Sony.
The potential of how much they could have made is insane, I would say they “lost” money even if they’re profitable. If done well, they all could have been 800mill+ grossers like Venom, & with Spider-Man’s inclusion they all would have made a billion at the box office
Good point. If every studio and every film took the huge losses people often claim they do, everyone but the MCU would close up shop. Box office plus the ancillary markets (which are becoming the primary markets) push studios over the finish line with profit. And though any studio would love to post billion dollar profits, any smart business knows as long as you make a decent profit, you stay in the game.

One thing I noticed too recently… there is absolutely no merchandise for Madame web, morbius, or kraven. None. They probably saved money not doing that too
Even with the financial losses of Madame Web and Kraven (I think Morbius was a break even), the money they made in the Venom movies more than makes up for it. Not even including the Spider-Verse films, just the spin-off universe, they're profitable.
This is why I speak with my wallet. Sony hasn't gotten a real dime from me since the first The Amazing Spider-Man movie. They've shown they just want to keep the rights by making terrible movies just like Fox was doing with the X-Men and Fantastic Four movies. These studios have years of comic book stories to adapt but they just put out trash that doesn't resemble what loyal comic book fans loved in the first place. I know other people see these movies besides us nerds but I think we are the ones they should be aiming to please first because a lot of us grew up reading those classic storylines and we know the potential these great stories can be done on the big screen.
Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that (in the Spider-Man-less Sony universe), Venom has made them profitable despite losing money on all their other films? They would be more profitable if they just did venom movies.
Venom is the easy contender since common audiences know who that is and love it despite not having Spider-Man, Morbius, Madame Web, Kraven, and oddly enough Venom 3 had some meddling to take that Spider-Man element out of those films and just use the IP bc Marvel and they think audiences won’t know the difference. Unless there’s a Studios at the end people know it’s in the MCU. If Lord and Miller had full control of the Spider Verse type movie they can expand and make amazing stories rather than think of a character and see if it works
My god, that sounds so irrelevant considering the poor quality thise movies have. Even the THREE Venom movies are bad, the first one may be beloved by many, myself included, but I also acknowledge the fact that the idea and story for the first venom was executed badly. So I'm surprised that Sony, since the second venom didn't do anything to improve the quality of the following movies. It's like saying they almost did on purpose
Sony sold the TV and merchandising rights back to Marvel maybe 10 years ago. They’re kicking themselves right now. Marvel approached Sony and Microsoft to make the Spider-Man game. Xbox said they didn’t need it, and ended up with Insomniac at Sony. The Spectacular Spider-Man was the last Sony produced cartoon. After that ended Ultimate Spider-Man started on Disney XD.
Well, when you include the Spider-verse animated movies that everyone loves in the numbers, this really isn't that shocking. How profitable are the live-action, Spidey-less movies? And then what about once you remove Venom from the equation, since they are apparently done with that? I 100% agree that Sony isn't selling Spider-Man back, but might they at least stop trying to make live action movies about his villains that he isn't part of?
Simple Spider-Man is Sonys biggest money maker they’ve made billions off of almost each movie if Sony gives up there biggest property it will lead to there bankrupt
The way I interpreted the article (with some speculation) is this: the Venomverse is dead. Sony waved the white flag on those, because majority of the films are deemed a laughing stock. Hell, the internet tricked Sony into re-releasing Morbius because of memes. They're likely talking BTS about what to do now while SM4, SV3, and Noir are being made. I think they'll come back with either Spider Gwen or 2099 movies in a new universe of sorts.
I really would love to see a black cat movie with Sydney Sweeney and an agent venom and silver sable movie none of those require spider man snd each of those character hace thete own lore so those would work way better

This all sounds like you’re saying Sony owns Spidey completely. Uh, no. Marvel owns Spidey’s IP and the majority of him contrary to popular belief. Yes, Marvel really does. The film rights? Obviously they are a huge deal, but even if you’re aware Sony doesn’t own all of Spidey, your post makes it sound like does. No? Well it’s funny many seem to think so. On that note, know what remains the most popular Spidey animated show? The one Marvel owns and could bring back someday. 😁 U know that? Either way, Marvel having the film rights to *their* character only makes sense. They never will? Something tells me the many more billions they’ve made with the MCU alone (and without Spidey) makes them sleep well at night. Nuff said
Yea yea we get it, they legally own him. But guess what Sony, no one wants you to have him! You’ve proven time and time again that you can’t do this without Marvel’s help. Yes, you had your good movies and ppl will defend the Spiderverse movies for decades. But times have changed and the Spiderverse movies are a success due to brilliant writers and animators who succeed at visual story telling not your interference and greedy hands. You showed us you had one intention with these movies, keep the rights and continue to make money. When a studio is only interested in making money(big part I know)then that’s the sign they’re too far gone. We don’t want to see these cash grabs, we want to see characters we love in stories we didn’t know we wanted and see them develop and go through relatable ordeals. Marvel is far from perfect, especially nowadays, but they’ve proven they at least care about the characters in more ways than seeing how much money they can make. That’s the treatment we want for Spiderman and his side characters. So yea, you own the rights Sony, but we don’t want you to have them and the census from Kraven and your previous movies is telling, you dont deserve these rights and nothing you plan is anything we’re interested in seeing. So sell the rights before you embarrass yourself any more.
Your forgetting money to the director and actors so it’s actually much less profit for these 7 films, also let’s be honest what other villains can they really do that would be intriguing
Depends on what the deal with Marvel and Sony says, John speculates that Sony is not allowed to have its own competing live action Spider-Man while they ahve the MCU version

People forget they've made 10 billlion from spiderman alone
Nuff said
Oh yeah, and all that Spidey merch that sells like crazy? All that’s money that goes to Disney/Marvel. Nuff said fr
Sony will not be making more spin off films
Sony are only focusing on making MCU Spidey films,Spider Verse 3,Spider Man Noir and Insomiac Spidey Games
Your forgetting money to the director and actors so it’s actually much less profit for these 7 films, also let’s be honest what other villains can they really do that would be intriguing
I think those are part of the budget.
Lol salaries are absolutely part of budget
Morbius and Kraven would have been better if they were connected to the MCU.
Marvel should take Perlmutter's Tactics, & Kill The Spider-Brand, so they can Push Mr. Marvel as the Face of Marvel, & Sales be Damnded.
It just makes no sense that we know there’s a multiverse why Sony can’t have there own version of spiderman
Depends on what the deal with Marvel and Sony says, John speculates that Sony is not allowed to have its own competing live action Spider-Man while they ahve the MCU version
Disney would ruin it madam web times a thousand times
Yeah but Sony ruined Madam once that's plenty for me! LOL
One thing I noticed too recently… there is absolutely no merchandise for Madame web, morbius, or kraven. None. They probably saved money not doing that too
