Thank You. Just WONDERFUL. Have Loved Mr Merle Haggard since i was 11 yrs old 1968. I am 66 and Still Love Him. Now His 4 Sons Noel Lee & Ben. Listen to them & Their Daddy Every Night. Sometimes Marty & Scott.
I was a teenager. Merle is one of the greats that you just thought we would have forever - and like many of the others - Johnny, George, Conway, all the way back to Hank - the music he, and they, made will endure forever. RIP Merle.
I have been a fan of Merle's for over 30 years and I had never heard that story about this song. No one could write that song or sing it the way he did if they had not lived it. Thanks for sharing the story.
this always reminds me of a friend named Chris who played guitar and sang. sadly I lost him in a tanker truck explosion hearing his sing sang me back home
He's even mentioned in an old Statler Brothers song " Put a cry in your voice like Haggard " and I believe that it was " Nobody wants to be country, They want to go pop " .
must have missed this on back in May Don - one of my all time great songs - great tune and harmonies to die for - lyrics brilliant and very sad as well - what a thought - goin to be executed !!!!x enjoyed your usual great reaction xxxx
Love this song, Merle was an absolute classic. I was planning to see Merle live, I was going to buy a former co-worker (and now really good friend) a high school graduation gift of a ticket for him and myself to catch Merle live. Unfortunately, Merle passed and the concert was obviously cancelled. But it would have definitely been a concert worth catching, just on his legend alone.
Think About It World For As Long As You Live You Will Never Ever Hear Another Singer, Songwriter Sing And Play Something So Beautiful As "Sing Me Back Home". I'll Bet The Angel's In Heaven Break Down In Tears When He Sings It.Something That Deserves A Standing Ovation In Heaven I'm Really Going To Miss You Merle. RIP.
Great song Don, Merle, was one of the mega star's in country music in the 60-70-80"s Great voice great tone to his voice, Don, I would like to request a song by Ronnie Milsap, called"NO RELIEF IN SIGHT" GREAT song for you to react to Thanks.
I heard someone react to Merle's songs and he made the comment that of course the "people back in the studio" could tweak the sound and make it better and that sort of makes me want to bang my head against the wall because it is not giving the credit to some of these great singers like Haggard and Jones and many other "old" country music singers that they deserve. They were not good because of tweaking in the studio or because of autotune. They were great because they had great voices to start with and then they practiced and practiced and practiced and practiced. I live in Nashville and 15 or so years ago I was lucky enough to get to see Merle live at the Ryman Auditorium and his songs sounded EXACTLY like they did on his records because he was just that good! I would love to tell everyone who is reacting to his songs, PLEASE do not lessen his talent by thinking his sound is because of some electronic enhancement....it wasn't!
A few months ago, I came across “ The Grapes Of Wrath “ on audiobook on UA-cam. Read a lot of books, but that one is so finely spoken, blew me away. It’s about refugees from the Dust Bowl who lost their farms in the Depression and went to California. Steinbeck was witness to a lot of it. I saw a little clip where Merle said the government camps were not as Steinbeck portrayed them. He was not amused, not at all. I wish Merle had written an autobiography. I’d love to learn the story of his life. Thanks for posting this.
I reading his books Mama Tried, House of Memories for 3rd time. My son also got Me The Hag by Marc Eliot. It is next. Love Merle & His Sons Singing. Also Bonnie AND Neomia Williams
There is a later version of this song by Don Williams that is very good. He didnt change the song. & he never did time or anything but his sound really fits well with this song. Ok here is a suggestion of a song I just happend to stumble across the other day that I had to send to all my freinds. Some of them probly hate me for forcing my music on them, but I'm ok with that. Johny Cash "The devils right hand".
@Michael Jackson Glad you liked it, and welcome aboard! I'll put George's song on my list, but please be patient with me since the list is long. But I'll get to it.
Hmm just a thought I had while listening, do you think he sang him the song referenced in the second verse with the choir? I think when he was asked to sing, he remembered that event and knew that that certain song held fond memories for his friend, and sang it as a special gift. IDK if that's what happened, I was just thinking about the lyrics
Beautiful, timeless, sometimes words alone just can't do the job. How to describe something valid as both both a universal emotion or a deeply personal experience? Grateful Dead used to cover this tune a long time ago. Achingly soulful. Kind of like Death Don't Have No Mercy. Melancholy, yet undeniably beautiful gut punch.
Thank You. Just WONDERFUL. Have Loved Mr Merle Haggard since i was 11 yrs old 1968. I am 66 and Still Love Him. Now His 4 Sons

How does one pull themselves together and sing a man to his death? Adds a whole new meaning to the word 'tough'.
I like your reaction after the song I'm right there with you man. All good.

That will tear your heart out and it’s all true hope and dreams man that’s all we got but the meek shall inherit the earth
I wonder if Merle wrote that song later after his experience, and if so, what song did he play to the inmate?

Merle had his own take on the grape’s of wrath. Listen to his song “Mama’s hungry eyes”. You will never hear a more powerful and touching song.
I reading his books Mama Tried, House of Memories for 3rd time. My son also got Me The Hag by Marc Eliot. It is next. Love Merle & His Sons Singing. Also Bonnie AND Neomia Williams
this song something like. The Green Grass of Home.
This is Thelma Elise Frank’s mom once again listened to this. Admire you so much for appreciating country
@Frank Scarborough Wow, thank you so much for such kind words, Mrs. Scarborough-you’ve humbled me greatly. Such a pleasant way to start off a Sunday!

I was just thinking about Don's version of this. I can't say I prefer either version, because both are beautiful in their own rights
I am touched by your emotions as you are. could you decipher George Jones: He stopped loving her today? Appreciate, Mike.
@Michael Jackson Glad you liked it, and welcome aboard! I'll put George's song on my list, but please be patient with me since the list is long. But I'll get to it.
The slow one he did about 10 yrs ago is a must.
Merle's youngest son Ben does a really good version of this.
Theres another live version of this song that merle does that has an even more powerfull impact
That first line..wow
@danny h Right? That one grabbed my attention years ago, and still gets me every time. BTW, welcome to the channel!
There are nowhere near enough reactions to sonsongs by Merle.
@Mark Cain Your Friend in the Car Business I'm working on it!
Chris Stapleton "Death Row" is very similar but a completely different tempo.
listen to his ALWAYS WANTING YOU, you might love it i do.
yeah a Ronald Reagan pardon him from prison. He saw a future in this man's talent.
I didn't know that he was pardoned by President (then Governor?) Reagan. Wow, thanks for the intel.
+RockN2Country yeah. look it up Merle Haggard was a great singer a Regan saw a meaning Good talent in this man's songs.
No....he pardoned him in the 1980’s.
He was released on parole, made it big, and later pardoned.
Have you ever done The Statler Brothers bed of roses
you need to do Billy Overcame His Size
Hmm just a thought I had while listening, do you think he sang him the song referenced in the second verse with the choir? So many things can be meant by a song that there may not be a right or wrong.
💔💔💔
No one like Merle, here is another of his that hits hard ua-cam.com/video/tN-G5oFiJCU/v-deo.html
