If you read his biography in detail, he had so many bad karma in his previous lives before meeting Guru Rinpoche. This was mentioned in Gurus speech to the Tibetan king Trisong Detsen. He also says that since the princess met him, now his bad karma will be shortened and will be reborn as a great master in one of his future lives. After that, he was born as ugly women in Tibet for few lives and repaid his negative karmic debt through much suffering and hardship. Finally, as his bad karma got cleared he was born as a fortunate male and was known as Pema Ledraltsal who was a buddhist scholar. After that only, he was born as Great Master Longchenpa. But in some of those previous lives of him, Guru Rinpoche too was born as some great being and had interaction with him where by he got blessed and paved way for better future lives.
