I bought a Toshiba PC-G30 the other day, only $8. Belt seems to be in good condition, but the little belt that runs the counter was lying dead inside when I opened the deck up. I had to clean the heads and roller with a q-tip, now it works way better. It's my first cassette deck.
The active ingredient in Rubber Renue in Xylene, it causes compressed rubber to expand. All rubber belts and pinch rollers eventually compress from years of mechanical pinching. The rubber components are not returned as new, but given a portion of their elasticity back through minor expansion of the rubber component. Too much contact with Xylene will cause over expansion, so using a q-tip seems to be the right size applicator for most projects. Use another q-tip to dry up any excess liquid is recommended. And yes get any rags or q-tips that have been in contact with this chemical out of the house as the smell will cause headaches, and is toxic.
Ingredients Xylene, Ethelbenzenr and Methyl Salicylate. Dangerous stuff. Avoid contact, use gloves. I use this stiff very rarely as a last resort, but it does work. I also use it in an open workshop, and open the main door when working with it so I don't get vapours concentrated.
The missing sockets isn't so bad, no sockets to fail :-) I have also had to clean the mode selector on nearly every machine i've repaired, some were so bad that a spray just didnt fix it. I ended up desoldering the switch and dissasembly. Lots of black contacts and sliders, after a clean and respring, a drop of 3 in one oil made them smooth, an ohms check varified them :-). Decks from 1978 seem to find me lol.
Yes they both work. The old Nutrol was superior to the new formulation. It used Freon TF as the solvent, and mineral oil as the lubricant. The new stuff uses alcohol based cleaners, and diesel. New stuff makes a great flame thrower.
I have a torque cassette to check tension. Try finding one of those now. They used to sell them at Radio Shack I also have a stylus microscope to inspect the diamond. Radio shack used to sell some cool gadgets.
Everything from the 80's, even the cheap stuff looks great compared to the crap that came out of China afterwords. That mechanism looks to be pretty good, and I love the old analog VU meters. It is funny how everyone wanted peak reading LED meters when analog VU was the norm, and then everyone went to blinky lights, and now everyone wants the nice look of a swinging needle.

Well it is not necessary on 2 head decks, only 3 head decks or playback only. All 2 head decks will self demagnetize as soon as you put it in record as the bias oscillator will neutralize any magnetism in the head. A 3 head deck and playback only need it because play heads never see any bias oscillator.
i'd love to see one of these videos, you fix the tape because its low output sound, but its not the tape head or the switch, possibly an input transformer. i'm saying this cause i have a tape echo machine and its low output sound.
What's up with all the flak over Deoxit? Personally, I love the stuff and use it all the time. It's great on switches, pots, tube sockets and tube pins, etc. To each his own, I guess. Thanks for the video!
I don't think he has a problem with DeoxIt, but some of the comments others made when he promoted it were pretty harsh. I have used it myself, and I find it is an excellent cleaner.
I hear you believe me. I have worked in dives for sure. Back when home service was offered. I had to work in trailer parks, and worse on the reservation. How people could live like that I have no idea. There was one guy that would bring his VCR in. He had this big black dog. The VCR was placed on a milk crate next to his bed so he could lie in bed and watch TV on his little black and white TV next to the bed. This was before remote control VCRs so he had it where he could press the buttons on it. He would have his rum and coke sitting directly over the VCR, and you guessed it, dump the drink all over the machine with a tape playing. The machine came in full of dog hair, and all stuck together from rum and coke. I had a projection tv come in that a dog lifted it's leg on. That would have been one of those Sony KPR36XBR that looked like a TV on a pedistil base, but that base was where the tubes and foot controls were. Restaurant microwave ovens were absolutely disgusting inside. My policy was the dirtier it was, the more I charged. After a few years of "home service" we decided that we would no longer try to repair in the house, and just picked up everything and took it to the shop. Did it for 20 years, and retired from the industry, and moved on to what I do now, which is a telecom install / repair electrician. My job duties are pulling wire and fiber, and the IP side of things configuring routers, wifi and set top boxes. Much more enjoyable work, and I work in a high end area all with million dollar homes. The repair stuff is now just a hobby. The youtube videos is a way to get me a few extra $ a month. Building my retirement fund, as I plan to retire from the telco gig in as little as 8 years.
I pretty much do exactly the same as you do. I'm an IT infrastructure technician, and my job is maintenance. When something breaks, I fix it. I also install routers, switches, access points, DirecTV, IPTV and so on. But, unfortunately, I do have to make house calls when someones Internet or TV stops working. Not really my favorite thing to do, especially when the customer is hovering over you the entire time asking questions and getting in my way.
I work in customers homes every day. Don't have many that get in my way. Lately I have been tasked with the 4K STB deployment, which involves swapping their old HD PVR box for the new 4kUHD box. If they use ethernet to connect to the modem it is easy. If coax was used, well then I have to swap modems too, and add dongles to all the boxes, because the coax standard has changed from HPNA to MOCA. I get repairs too and that means climbing power poles when the problem is outside.
It doesn't matter what cleaner you use there all the same i use holts electro lube. I used to use wd40 apparent that's bad. Get the volume lots i used it on still work ok I think wd40 is a fire risk.
hi 12voltvids! i have a Sony WM EX 102 Walkman when I recently got it it sounded a bit slow so i took the back off and took the belt off to have a look the belt seemed fine so i tried to put it back on but it got stuck under the left gear, if I pay shipping from Australia both ways can you take a look and maybe fix it? i love cassettes on the go but not digital so i'm desperate to fix! thanks!
Hello I have a Sanyo Rd 5300 cassette deck that the drive pulley and take-up reel were dry-rotted and the ends just fell off so now it won't spin the reels of the cassette do you have any suggestions
I know rubber-renewal spray comes in handy when you ain't got replacing rubber belts, but my question is how long will it last? Will the rubber worn out in a short period of time again?
Enjoy your videos. Two questions if you can help me with. Do you ever demagnetize the heads and the bottle shown on your bench is your head cleaner no doubt. But the 99% alcohol is what brand and can it be purchased in a drug store. Thank you
The 99% isoproponal alcohol is just drugstore brand. As to demagnetization this is more important for playback only heads. 2 head machines, as soon as you put it into record, the AC bias will remove any magnetic charge. I used to demagnetize my heads but my the unit broke, and I haven't bothered replacing it. I really don't use tapes that much these days anyway.
Those wide cassette belts are impossible to get.... you can get them for 8 track players , but I have not found any suppliers that sell wide cassette belts... plenty of the little square belts is all I can find...
Two places in the U.S. off the top of my head...Vintage-Electronics.net and Marrs Communications. Marrs has the best belts for vintage equipment, but the customer service is.... V-E, on the other hand ships immediately.
My uncle had a cheap Mitsubishi rack system of the same vintage as this deck, where the back and I think the base were that paperboard stuff, lined with metal foil inside for shielding. It was common, at least in the early ‘80s.
Everything's supported by the base 'plate'/hardboard. Fairly typical of low-end build to be honest. As you say, it didn't break in over 30 years so the design can't be that bad. It'll be interesting to see what state those Crosley-type slot-load tape playback decks will be in come 2047.
I love Sanyo’s vintage stuff. None of it was high quality necessarily, but they really seemed to know where to cut corners and where NOT to cut corners in order to hit their price target. Their stuff always seemed like a good value, even if it was fairly low-end. Whereas cheap Sony or Technics stuff tended to be absolute garbage, and other budget equipment makers like Yorx or Soundesign just turned out total junk.
It's driving part of the logic controls for the soft touch. When you push the button at it moves levers that cams hit that actually do the work of moving the transport. So it's always in "standby" waiting for you to push a button. I have Technics m205 ..it's like this. It's before the days of microprocessor control.
I have Sanyo C7 boombox with almost identical mechanism, also soft touch, identical buttons layout, but motor engages only upon press of function button and it is real PITA to replace belts. I has to be stripped down almost completely. But it is 100% steel mechanism. No plastic whatsoever. A real tank!
When I moved to the states, I had to change my vocabulary. Varsol is paint thinner Marrette is a wire connector. If you don't, you get strange looks like you a wierdo.

Sanyo made the stereo microcassete recorder aswell it was great, mechanical problems on these though can be a right pain in the arse to fix

I used to grab the reel hubs on test and judge the torque. Fine job.

This unit's build quality looks fantastic compared to crappy cheap no-name Chinese cassette recorder that I used to have in late 90s.

I have never used Deoxit because I do not think it is available in the UK.
The best switch/contact cleaner in the UK is Super Servisol.

Perhaps an oring might be able to fit around the hub. No parts are available anymore.
