You really should consider including a small Artic Entry (what you referred to as a mud room). A door opening directly into your living area literally sucks all heat out of the room. You will very much appreciate the barrier room in the dead of winter and in the summer, protection from ravenous mosquitoes in your living space. I am speaking from many years of experience in Alaska.
This is a great idea. We would love to add this. Will need to think about this.
Arctic
I lived in the Iron range of Minnesota. Everyone had a porch to walk into on their home out worked great.
um just a helpful hint, that lilac bush is gonna get huge and should be planted strait in the ground, its gonna take over that whole flower bed like a small tree. might wanna move it into the yard or next to the house. gonna need to bury it deeper. it has some good roots when it grows. gonna get about 6 feet or so tall. same with the rasberry bush, it will vine out and get really big and evasive, take over the whole area. they spread fast.
Yeah, what they said. The gooseberry will/can grow 5' h x5' w as well.
And the raspberries send out shoots, will definitely spread.. The moose are going to eat that garden up unfortunately.. Nice job on the garden building part! 😊
@@rougefox9233 Yes on the raspberry bush I moved mine last fall and the shoots came up in the original flower bed again this year will try again to move it this fall. They will grow all over the place. The raspberry bush I moved died out but brought up new shoots so hopefully next year I will get raspberries off of where I planted it. I am new to growing berry bushes, am really enjoying the one blackberry bush I didn't move handful of berries every day. For some reason the birds aren't finding them. Anna In Ohio
Was gonna say the same. The berries and lilac need room of their own. But they are better off where you have them now instead of in pots and can be moved later. Nice job on the raised bed. I wish I could have about 20 of them right now.👍🏻
Thanks for the comment. The garden was a place to start and we will be moving some of them as they get bigger. The Lilac is a dwarf so shouldn't get too big. We found some other berries on the property and may add the raspberry to that area. 😀
You can throw old logs, branches etc. in the bottom of the raised bed to fill some of the volume and hold moisture. As the wood decays it feeds the plants. They call it hugelcultur.
Great job on the open floor plan coming into the house, love it. Raised flower bed for Julie also great job she will sure enjoy it. Don’t get any better company than what you had with the baby. 😊😊
Love how you sail over the challenging hurdles and make things better!! Super duper love that you love the moose who share your property!!🙏🏽The Lord bless you and protect you and your beautiful family!!💖
I love the front entrance area revamp! Makes a lot of sense and really opens up the living area. Thanks for all the safety precautions when you were working on the demo with all that mold and other nasty stuff! On some other channels, I can't watch their projects for long since they don't take care of their eyes, ears, and lungs - I cringe to see them 'naked' when knee deep in mold/rot, or using power tools. 😬 I'm looking forward to hearing what you'll be doing with all the car and truck carcasses on the property once you turn your attention to them, and what additional discoveries you've made after the snow was gone for good. Take care, and happy Alaska spring! 😊🌞🌼
As I like to say “Safety first, Make it your motto!” Thanks for watching :)
Great work on the raised bed. A little hint about filling it- first put in small branches and forest debris to at least half way up. Then use your front loader to dig and put in soil from around the place. Only then use that expensive bagged soil to fill to about 3-4 inches from the top. Then replant your plants leaving more space for the bushes. Poles at the corners for a netting will help with the critters. Good luck.
Happy Anniversary! Woahhh Ew, yeah that's black mold, from water leaking right there. I'd remove that entire rooms flooring with all new wood floor. It's gotta go for sure man. That would make anyone very sick. Yep you made a eye beam there. Yep, with that small wall gone now youve got a nice entry/mud room there, a place or rack to hang your coats and a shoe rack or open top bench along the wall to sit and put on/off and store your boots/shoes. Good luck!
That room looks so much better! Good idea to make thar your entrance to your house, those stairs in the back looked scarey.
Thanks! It works much better for us.
Lilac needs a limey soil, hosta needs shade to part shade, raspberries will take over. Plus you should fill the bottom with sticks, straw etc to raise the soil level. The lilac should really come out and be planted in a protected sunny spot with lime.
Good job with your projects! Your channel will be fun to watch as you make your home and new life.
I would have dumped a load of dead leaves, branches and old wood into the planter before adding any soil but even before that I would have used the rotavator or a spade and fork to loosen up the area under the planter to improve water draining and rooting because the ground looks very compacted there but maybe that's for the next planter 😊
Good job with the tile Julie. 😊❤
Another great channel I discovered. Love your new cabin. Can’t wait to see what you and your wife accomplish. ❤️
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching
Winterr proof entrace will be sure nice to have. That place sure was crying for tlc. Keep up the hard work it is paying off. Get a battery chop saw ,Ryobi makes several models. Get a single 200amp hourLithium Ion and it will out last the two 6 volts. I would invest money in 12 Rv Fridge and instal seperate 12 volt 200 amp hour battery with its own solar charger set up.
Fill you raised garden with branches, etc and then put your soil on top of it. A lot cheaper than buying all that soil.
Dude, you're gonna need a pair of good work boots for working in that house. Slippers ain't gonna do it. LOL! Love the channel so far.
John Jeavons book "How to Grow More Vegetables and Fruits (and Fruits, Nuts, Berries, Grains, and Other Crops) Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land Than You Can Imagine" great how to book on raised bed intensive gardening - continuously in print since 1974, available on abebooks for less than $10 including shipping
Thank you! We will look into it :)
Watching this from Southwest Florida in July
Awesome. Thanks for watching. I bet it's much hotter there. 😆
Lots of nice work done .this place is going to be so much nicer .glad I found this page
Hope the gooseberry bush takes off. Nothing better than a fresh baked gooseberry pie with ice cream. 👍👍👍
Lots of progress. Look great.
I just found your videos. I subscribed! Can't wait to see what y'all make of everything!
Awesome! Thank you!
Usually a "raised" flower bed means its up higher not at ground level to essentially be easier to bend over and cultivate the bed when needed . With all that work I would think you would have put that near the home for enjoyment of the beauty and the handywork you went through to make it but mostly for the flowers . Good job on the work you did though .
The raspberries will reseed them selves and take over the entire garden bed. They really need their own space, a lot of space.
Yep! All the berries were moved. That was a temporary spot for them. ☺️
@@OffGridInAlaska Thanks so much for sharing this endeavor/journey you and your wife are on. It's been a pleasure binging your videos. I need more. 😆
I was thinking the moose or other wildlife will eat your plants unless you plan to cover them?
That trailer flooring is making a nice raised bed, but a trailer sure comes in handy for trips to landfill or hauling lumber. Amazon sells raised beds cheaper than flooring. 😮
I would reconsider planting that box like that - 1st, I would use your Coyote and get a bucket of native topsoil and dump that in 1st and mix in some organic debris like leaves, moss, even some rocks, etc - to about the 1/2 way up point in your box - then dump in your bags of topsoil to bring the level up to just below the top edge of your box. There's not much benefit to having a 'raised bed' that still makes you stoop down deep inside the box! 2nd, I would reconsider planting a lilac or blackberry in the box. Those plants get large and will rob all your garden plants of valuable nutrients. I would also suggest more youtube videos on this to gain more insight to raised beds! Of course, you'll do what you're going to do. I'm not trying to be rude or invasive here - just some helpful advice from over 50 years of gardening experience!
Thanks you so much for the tips. We should have went into better detail that this was a temporary bed until Julie came back to finish it. We will be posting a future video with better detail.
Thanks for watching. 😊
Great video! I am loving your channel!!! You are a really hard worker. You are getting some amazing suggestions from your viewers and I hope you will read them. Hugelcultur is a great idea for the raised bed garden you created. Just throw in some logs, branches, etc. to raise the level of that bed up higher. As others suggested, move the lilac and raspberries to a different location. They will grow very large. Hostas like shade, so maybe move that one too (beware that deer love hostas). 🙂 I would make a frame around that garden to put clear plastic on it in the spring and later remove the plastic and replace with chicken wire. The plastic will extend your growing season and the chicken wire will keep the critters out. Just a thought.
You did a ton of work on the new entrance to your house. It looks great!! As others suggested, an Arctic Entry is a good idea. It is a small enclosed area where you drop off your boots, coats, etc. There is a door between it and your house so that you don't lose valuable warm air from the house. It is amazing how cold your place will get with just a few blasts from an open door.
I can't wait to watch more of your adventures. You are an inspiration to homesteaders!
you are hilarious, love your channel and congrats on finding all the treasures on your homestead, incredible!
Feel like you should have gone the LVL route over nailing those stringers together. Stronger and better for Sheeran earthquakes I would imagine.
Such a beautiful place, the scenery is stunning. I live in Australia so don’t get to see snow like that 😂. How do you cope with the temperatures, especially when working outside? Good you are finding stuff around the property that you are able to use . Really interesting to watch your videos and I love seeing your visitors checking out the place for food.
Officially impressed Julie with the shower!! :)
Thank you!
Love the raised bed. What most do is fill the bottom half with dead branches about 2 or more inches around. Then put your dirt on top. The raspberries will take that whole bed over. Same with the lilac. Those should either be in their own containers or directly in the ground away from other plants. Gooseberry will get huge. It also should be in its own container.
Thank you. The plan is to move them to a different area but we just wanted to get them in the ground. We will have a video coming up with an updated flower bed. 😀
HARD, HARD WORK! You all rock. A trip to the mountains, many moons ago, we were headed up to Bear Tooth Pass, we had to wait 3 hours while the road dept. removed several feet of snow! Did I mention it was July 3rd? Might want to get a remote mic.
Always love watching your videos!
Glad you like them!
I do enjoy your videos.
LOL Raised beds are just that What you have done is build an enclosed garden. LOL The lumber sides is to keep the soil inside with plants up even with the top of the lumber sides. You really need a couple of truck beds of soil to fill the raised beds correctly. Hope your wife isn't too disappointed. Anyway, the lumber was done correctly just didn't put nearly enough soil in there.
As someone else commented, put old logs and detritus in the bottom to fill it up part way, then soil.
thanks for the video
When we built a nature trail next to the Portage Glacier gift shop we bought the trailor we stayed in down at Soldotna and discovered they had two golf courses, which we played. That was over a dozen years ago, I wonder what kind of shape they're in now. I was mightily impressed with Soldotna after that, lol...
We're going to check them out. Stay tuned. ⛳️
Need the suggestions about the artic entry, hugelcultur, lilac bush, and moose protection.
We hit a few pot holes, or as I call them asteroid strikes, there by destruction bay. Good name for it that place. LOL
Yes. That's a rough patch of road!
Will animals eat from the beds? And they look beautiful!
I hope you kind of protected those beautiful new plants from “Mark the Moose”
Sadly, if not, I guarantee it. He will find them first of all the next time he comes to visit. 🤪
New plants ….. moose fodder
That's a neat old truck from the 40's.Any idea what it is?
Julie is a beautiful lady for sure! its been fun watching!!!
Thank you so much. 😊
Just found your videos today. Love sharing your adventures. Do you know anymore about what caused previous owner to leave? Ann in Indiana.
Bet he wishes he did not haul that Heavy Duty Weed Barrier Landscape Fabric to the dump 2or 3 episodes back , would be great under those raised garden beds .
Not sure I can watch your channel anymore cause your a Hawks fan 😉. Go Niners☺️
Nice video
It's beautiful, but waaaay tooo cold for me! Brrr!
Lovin the videos. Please reconsider using mobile phones for videos.
Or pictures.
Watch - Simple living Alaska for planting tips
please make an Alaska room.
Are you both going to live there full time ?
Did the leak in the roof get fixed?
Thanks for watching! Yes we were able to find the leak and fix it.
What did you guys do with all the stuff left in the house?
Kept a lot, donated a lot and some was garbage. Thanks for watching!
Black mold? Be very cautious.
You're gonna be sorry not having a mud room
Agree. A mud room would be great.
😊😊
👏💕
How do you have so many followers in such a short amount of time ?
What is that stuff? That’s floor is nasty under that stuff put on a mask
Yikes that is some mold 🤮
Hope you plan on putting a tall fence around that raised bed! Otherwise you're just building a big salad bowl for the moose!
The entrance is wonderful, what a change.
North to Alaska and Simple Living Alaska put up 8 foot tall garden fence!
@@sgrvtl7183 They know what they're dealing with them two..The amount of things Ariel likes for her gardens, so amazing the knowledge they have.
Good job! I suggest getting some pvc pipe to bend over the raised bed to make an arch which will support either chicken wire or agricultural cloth (contains fibrous wire) to keep the critters out. Not expensive and will save heartache as well as replacement costs. Enjoy seeing your progress!
Yeah, my thoughts as well - at the least the planter will need a canopy over it if there isn't a plan to fence off that area by the outbuilding. Of course, by now, since it looks like the videos are from a bit ago, there may have been snacking on the original plantings and any replacements already! We'll see!
The raspberries will spread and take over the bed. You might consider a separate smaller bed with barrier cloth to keep them in place.
I had 3 board raised beds in Nome with native flowers in one, salad veggies in a second and easily grown bouquet flowers in the third. The native flowers were the only ones that lasted over winter for multiple years.
Very good idea I was thinking the same thing. Anna In Ohio
Hi, found you when I was watching Simple Living Alaska. I have watched them through their move from Oregan to Alaska and all the different things they have done. They do all the work themselves except when they poured cement (it was a big project). I was amazed that the person who lived there didn't want the pictures of family members and friends. So sad 😞. Now I have a new channel to watch and see how you all do on your property and if you go hunting and fishing and just doing maintenance around your property. It seems to me that you could probably sale most of the vehicles and use the monies for the new cabin you want to build. Thank you for sharing and God Bless you and your family. 🥰👍👍👍👍👍(🌹🐞🦂🌵)
We love Simple Living too! They were a big inspiration for us! Glad you found us and thanks for watching :)
Love that you're sharing your journey.
Simple living is amongst my top 3 YT channels. Looking forward to seeing your journey.
I watch Simple Living Alaska! Arielle and Eric have done amazing huge projects. I found their channel as they were driving to Alaska from Oregon. Quite a journey!!
I watched them too. I just could handle their addiction to Costco. 😊❤
so much nicer to make that entrance way there and open out the whole space. might need to put in an enclosed porch in winter for insulation, but makes the inside so much better.
I’m sure that the gap under the front door allows a lot of cold air and moisture inside.
First you put a bunch of branches and mulch in it and fill it about 3/4 up, then layer soil. The branches rot down . the plants should be above the wood so they get sun.
That floor is scary. Black mold is no joke. The shower looks great! Raised beds are best with twigs, branches etc down first then soil and using soil from around the property first. The branches allow for drainage and break down over time to provide future compost. Adding in the bags of soil you bought to the very top layer. That way the planter box doesn't look so empty. She's probably going to make you redo that lol. Also open boxes with no protection/fencing will mean that Mark the moose will have a nice snack.
Better put some fence around your garden!
I think you guys are providing this old guy with his new most favorite UA-cam channel! THANKS!
WOW! Looks great! And momma and baby. Hard work but such wonderful results!
Wow, what incredible scenery!
Well Happy Anniversary to you both and those views were amazing to see, so much beauty in the world we forget to stop and look, as for the work in the entrance that was great to open it up, pity it was due to rot but so much nicer and I would say warmer too. As for the raised bed wont the Moose eat it all ??? any way looking forward to next video till then have a great weekend xxx Love from Ireland xxxx Dede
This is my favorite smaller UA-cam channel love this channel
Thank you so much! Glad you are having as much fun as we are :)
I’m 80 years old and oh my goodness if many years ago places like this had been an option it would’ve been so much easier raising a child and having a place to live
Hopefully the next generation like you and the ones after realize the housing can be affordable if you’re willing to work for it
Wearing slippers while you do construction work? 😅
Congrats on 20k I love the journey can wait to see it when its done
Sir you will most definitely be putting that wall back u come winter and bug season.
Sir you will need way more soil.
One motmre thing, id redo that snagging over hang there and id put some support beams under that exterior overhang, id insulate that small room and set some insulated windows with screens on top wall, half way up/down, so you can still use it as a small three or four season porch, you'd still enjoy the scenery top that exterior wall of windows underneath that overhang- plus it would also help insulate the house being enclosed. You can akways add plastic hoops on that wooden raised garden bed, using pvc pipe to protect those plants from frost. Best wishes.
You need a mask on ripping that floor up!
I really enjoy your videos, aldo feel very bad for you it seems like everytime you start on a project more nightmares pop up.
We love all our new challenges and projects! So much fun! Thanks for watching
Congratulations. In May was our 29th anniversary also
❤ past Hells gate and into Hope. I have a band promotional shot on the Watson Lake wall.
Another great vlog. Thanks. Good idea to make a flowerbed early on so you can enjoy it while you continue to work on the main buildings. Great stuff. Jo in France 🇫🇷
Thanks for watching Jo in France! :)
I'm glad to see other people have their indoor work slippers too!
I am loving channel and seeing Alaska. Thanks for a virtual vacation!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing your journey & accepting feedback!
Don’t get scared away, even when some of us are talking back to UA-cam (“It’s a petcock for draining water/winterizing!”…
“It’s an Arctic Entry!”) 😂😂
We still appreciate your openness & excitement!
20 thousand subscribers! Way to go
As always I really enjoyed watching and before I knew it the episode was over, once again cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you for showing us all you're doing. I love the wildlife and the beautiful views. Thank you so much for sharing. About 30 yrs ago, we almost moved up there too. Got a brother-in-law and his wife, daughter, and grand son, up near Anchorage. Then our niece and her husband and daughter there in Soldotna. Absolutely love it up there.😊❤
Hardware cloth in the bottom of the bed to prevent critters from burrowing into your garden bed. I speak from experience-hindsight is 20/20
An open floor plan would make it seem more spacious for sure. I also plant in raised beds only as it is much more manageable.♥
Not in the dead of winter and summer in Alaska.
@@Patrice314 agreed.☺
I’m enjoying your channel so much. As always, you’re getting a lot of advice and I’m going to add my two cents. If you come across black mold again, please wear a respirator. Looking forward to more renovations and wondering just how many junked vehicles are on your property and what you’ll do with them.
I love what you are doing and the changes you are making!
Thanks for watching!
The UA-cam algorithm steered me to your channel since the very beginning.
I am vicariously enjoying your adventure very much.
Congratulations on your beautiful raised bed.
I am wondering if a removable small A-frame type top would help protect your plants and defeat the unpredictability of Alaska springtime.
Congratulations on your anniversary!❤ Julie is one of a kind. She must be a very good sport.
A lot of women would take one look at all that black mold on that floor and say, 'I'm outta here!"
(To say nothing of all the abandoned vehicles and junk that may be laying under the snow.)😮
At least the two of you are on the same "adventure/optimist" page.
I enjoyed your spirited rendition of the "Mark the Moose song.
As I said, Julie must be very tolerant.
I only have one piece of advice for you:
"Don't give up your day job."😅(Just kidding!)
Should be filming the work being done..like to see your skills
Put on some work shoes - keeps nails from puncturing the bottom of you foot. Great example was laying the base moulding with nail side up as you were removing it. It only takes one mistake to ruin your best laid plans.
Great advice. Don't want any injuries for sure.
