Was expecting a review from someone who had no idea how to play, instead I got a pretty good review for beginners. You bring out good points, the game doesn't properly teach how to play, you'll have to search it through the endless menus for tips, and that scares a lot of beginners. But once you move past that and start understanding how the mechanics work, I actually think it's more enjoyable then most fighting games.
Still, there are a lot of issues with some of the mechanics and attacks frame data. It's a shame this game didn't get the recognition it deserved, if it did it would be a lot more improved by now and I'm sure there would be super exciting tournaments like MK and Tekken.
I disagree with everything you say around 1:00 .
You're either having particular control responsiveness issues or don't understand the deck/combat system. I've played absolver on 6 different computers and it's always been super responsive and intuitive once you get to understand the flow of combat. The fact that you couldn't defeat Risryn proves the point that your training is not finished just yet, prospect. Better hurry up and beat her, lest your mask goes black.
Edit: On the other hand you're right it's not a super optimized game. It didn't need to. It was made by a relatively small studio. The aestethic is pleasing and the gameplay is smooth enough.
The ACTUAL problem with absolver is SC messed up while advertising it, released it with an unfinished school system and unstable servers that caused the game to be unplayable in those crucial first 48h. As for the advertising part, they basically made a 3d fighting game and failed to advertised it as such. They sold you wuxia dark souls, and upon purchase you received mma soul calibur.
The lackluster school system and absence of ingame comms put the nail in the coffin, since most player interactions you had were very fleeting.

I'm going to get this game. 4 years late and with only the hardcores still playing it. That's how I role babyyy. Those people who are mad because they spent $30 without knowing what they were buying, they should be smarter consumers.
This game was a beautiful tragedy. I actually adore the combat system most of all. I PRAY that it gets implemented in another game one day. This game innovated the fighting game genre the way Skate did the skateboarding genre....Its so completely different but the potential for greatness is off the charts. Can you imagine an "Avatar: The Last Airbender" type of game with these mechanics where you weave together your own combos and the devs can continuously add single moves to the game to switch things up. Idk, I have never fallen in love with a game that flopped so hard and its disappointing but I'll keep this game forever on my pc (originally played on ps4) to remember and maybe show my son one day.
this game used to be better before they gave up and stopped updating it

I have to agree with you that Absolver has to have THE MOST kind community I have ever seen. Practically everyone I’ve run into would greet me with emotes, we would have hilarious duels, and I would be revived if I lose, especially by the stronger players that would seem to try to teach me through their character. Unfortunately, the lack of any form of microphones can have most interaction a guessing game and the tutorial is VERY bare bones and just throws you in without much of a clue. I absolutely had NO idea how to make a combat deck and I still have no idea how to unlock other styles or how to completely master the style that I started out with. The lack of a map is also irritating because I just find myself wandering aimlessly and going in complete circles. There is a ton of finesse that comes with this game and I do like that and there being tactics involved, but I feel that players would have a better experience and a better time playing it if they knew what to do.
