This is exactly what I need done to my head! How to I find a machine shop that will do it? I try to explain to them what I need done and it’s like I’m speaking a different language
Nice work. I'd have used a brass sleeve and done all 5. A common modification on race engines with high lift and long duration cam profiles. But it must feel good working on something well engineered instead of a Harley. Although they likely keep you shop busy
I assume you’ve seen many cylinder heads on dirt bikes !! So maybe you could explain to me I have a 2012 yz450 and under the valve spring seats they have an X machined into the head but only on 3 of the 4 valves have it . Why ??
Unless this engine is going to be used for low speed commuting, then the decision to use Loctite to keep the sleeve in place is fatally flawed. The sleeve should have been shrunk into the head, with the head heated to about 450 degrees in an oven , and after cooling the inner face which would have been machined smaller than the diameter of the valve cup, would be machined to clearance size. In that way, the machined sleeve will stay in place even at racing speeds. j
@NickoLps No, it works at probably 5000 strokes per minute, These engines definitely rev past 10,000 rpm. @Anthony Williams this is literally what loctite retaining compound is meant for, and actually much more severe cases as well. it will work without a problem.
Paul X i got a speedi sleeve for my crankshaft its a 25mm shaft & a 25mm sleeve does that sound write to you has it looks like a tight fit but haven't put it on yet just tested it up against it for now buddy ? ? ?
but they do? Well maybe you could get away with it if you are just changing out the valves and not repairing anything, but the service manual says to always re-cut the seats so the valves can wear in properly. At the same time, don't even bother with replacing the valves if you're not going to cut the seats, just clean them of deposits and remember which one goes where. AND NEVER LAP THEM. they are usually coated on these high performance engines.

Paul have you ever considered going down tapered and then lock it on top with a screw to secure it but outside tapered like a ball pen the inside is normal but the outside is tapered inwards and with a locking screw both sides or something ,I am getting my head fixed here in Africa at dirtboyz on Instagram they're really good apparently they said my head could be fixable so I'm sending it ,man I wish I could be there just to watch or help them ,I don't know what's wrong with me dirt bikes is a bad habit for me I'll never grow up!lol
The only thing I may have done differently is, I would have made the sleeve a bit more of an interference fit, heated the head up in an oven, put the sleeve on dry ice and then fitted it. I am not keen on the loctite idea, but that is just me
loctite 638 isn't a regular threadlocker. It's a permanent retaining compound, and I would trust it far more than a shrink fit on such a thin-wall aluminum piece. A shrink fit is only as strong as the weakest component in it.

Thats last resort. It would cost you as much to buy a head as to pay someone to do that much work. Also thers a chance of that sleeve failing under heat and high rpm.

You're real mechanic. You repair damaged part, not replace it.

i think what you're looking for is a machinist. A mechanic replaces parts, not do precise machining to within a thousandth of an inch.

Aluminum is not a problem.
I use it with a higher Si content.
