- Easier Said Than Done (Linton) by The Essex
Lead vocalist Anita Humes and her group were active-duty members of the U.S. Marine Corps when they recorded this number-one hit.
THE 1963 HITS ARCHIVE - here in one place, a good-quality library of original-release-version best-sellers and songs that made an impact that were either released or enjoyed a major chunk of their popularity within the calendar year 1963 (some were recorded in 1962).
I heard this fabulous song for the first time in at least 50 years a few days ago on a UK radio station. It brought back so many happy memories from the 1960s.
When I think of popular music during the Kennedy Administration this one always comes to mind.
I play this whenever anybody says easier said than done. I was T-minus 12 years in 1963 meaning I was a dream inside the twinkle of my mother’s eye. Good tune.
I love her voice
They were enlisted in the US Marines at the time.
Semper Fi.
My first 45 purchase! those were the days.
This is a great song.. My first 45 was ten years later in 1973, I think it was 95 cents or so!
Summer of '63, #1 everywhere ! I was 16 y/o .
Great memory of 1963 radio for me.
I have this single
My Babysitter had this exact 45 !! She brought it along with her other records in her 45 record case. Her record, on the label had in thick black marker C M (Cathy Maloney). Why do I remember this so well ??!!!
Because you loved the music
Because it was great times and great music which adds up to great memories.
Had enough spark to light up the 60's AM sairways!!😊
Lyrics:
My friends all tell me
Go to him, run to him
Say sweet lovely things to him
And tell him, he’s the one
Deep in my heart I know it
But it’s so hard to show it
‘Cause it’s easier, easier said than done
My buddies tell me
Fly to him, sigh to him
Tell him I would die for him
And tell him, he’s the one
Although he gives me a feeling
That sets my heart a-reeling
Yet it’s easier, easier said than done
Well, I know (I know) that I love him so
But I’m afraid that he’ll never know
Because I (I-I) I get so timid and shy
Each time that I look him in the eye
They all tell me
Sing to him, swing with him
And just do anything for him
And tell him, he’s the one
I got a love so true
And yet I’m sad and blue
‘Cause it’s easier, easier said than done
Well, I know (I know) that I love him so
But I’m afraid that he’ll never know
Because I (I-I) I get so timid and shy
Each time that I look him in the eye
They all tell me
Sing to him, swing with him
And just do anything for him
And tell him, he’s the one
I got a love so true
And yet I’m sad and blue
‘Cause it’s easier, easier said than done
Easier-er-er-er, said than done
it's just NOT possible to say just how big this song was, in that summer of '63. I was 16 y/o , worked full-time, & on the radio i had with me, this was on 950, KIMN, AM in Denver, all the time ! ------------How i wish i could go back ! 2021 just sucks.
2022 isn't any better. Love this easy to listen to song. Hit #1 on July 6, for 2 weeks. Anita Humes, lead singer.
Heart Riffed a Version backstage in the 70's of this song -- it's just a short version but i thought it was good

My older brother bought this record in the summer of '63, we wore it out here near Waco, Texas that good ole time.
The Essex’s Easier Said Than Done topped the pop charts for two weeks on July 6-13,1963 ending Kyu Sakamoto’s three week run at the top with a song sung in Japanese titled Sukiyaki(A Taste Of Honey did a remake of Sukiyaki sung in English and was a huge hit also that topped the R&B charts for one week on May 9,1981 and crossed over to the pop charts peaking at number three for three weeks on June 13-27,1981). Afterwards when the Essex ended their two week run at the top, they were dethroned by Jan and Dean with a song that Jan Berry co-wrote with Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys titled Surf City.
Do u know Kyu was on that jet liner that wasnshit down by a Russian fighter?????
#1 on 77-WABC that summer.
They were members of the U.S. Marines when this was #1, 'The Few, 'The Proud'
My dad and my husband were in the Marines. My dad was on Iwo Jima and my husband was in Viet Nam twice and was in the Tet Offensive. They're both gone now.
A great song
Guess Anita Humes On " To Tell The Truth "
While I like this song, I actually like their follow-up " Walkin' Miracle " much better.
NO Way!

Thus song is hot 😊 !
Something tells me this isn't the actual 45. The 45 has more echo on it.
Great old twistin' hit. Thanks! Was this Roulette's original label design ? I'm familiar with the orange and yellow striped one.
