  • More than 26 million free meals were served to students every day because of a federal free school lunch for all program that started during the pandemic. Now, that program is ending and families must apply for meal coverage, but only certain incomes meet the requirements. NBC News’ Emilie Ikeda spoke with families directly impacted and looks at how one school district is trying to meet the need.

I’m 61 years old and when in school both my brother and I were on the free lunch program in high school, we lived in a low income household and both my mom and dad were so grateful for this program because they knew we would get a decent nutritional meal for lunch which took the pressure off of them of trying to scrape up money either for the cost of a weeks worth of lunch money or trying to buy extra food to make lunch for two high school kids when they truly didn’t have the money for it. I didn’t understand when I was younger, but neither of my parents would ever have seconds or in my mothers case at times she would not finish her supper plate and give to my brother or I what was left on her plate, but I understood as I got older they made sure we had enough to eat even as they still may have been hungry. Then I went to a high school that had a hot lunch program that everybody had to pay for if you wanted it, there was no free food. But I never got it because the line was so long that you never got the food with any time left to eat it so I just didn’t even bother to try and get it because as soon as you finally got through the line it was time to go back to class. The halls were packed solid with students and it took forever to get to your next class and being a girl sometimes it was really hard to find time to go to the bathroom and heaven help you if you were late to class because you got sent to the office. So eating never happened till I got home, I only weighed 107 pounds and my mom was not a very good cook. I would make a peanut butter sandwich when I got home. We had to pay for the school bus ride too. Nothing was free. Then my sophomore year it started being my responsibility to cook dinner for my family and have it ready to be put on the table by 5:00 and take care of my little brother because my mom got a job.

Now stack that on top of being the youngest of 3 to a single mom with no money, who didn't seem like she wanted to be bothered with actually taking care of us kids, so most of the time I never went to school with a lunch or even having had breakfast. Of all the schools I went to only one had a cafeteria that sold food, and for the free lunch program I was given a punch card for 3 cups of noodles a week. Once in high-school I'd end up skipping school and stealing from stores in the mall to sell to other kids from school so I could get food, but then I got caught and was forever labeled a theif from my entire family, but even after dropping out around grade 10 I was fortunate enough to come out on top (which not everyone gets to be so lucky) and I now comfortably live the life I dreamed of as a kid. Kids shouldn't have to go hungry. Who knows how much better I could of done in school and early life in general, if I didn't have to spend the whole time thinking about how hungry I was.

Based on the comments it appears that some people took this as taking free or reduced breakfasts and lunches out of schools. It doesn't. It only returns it to just low income families that actually need these programs, rather than all children regarless of family income. In the video I saw a great many children eating packed lunches from home. Some kids are fussy eaters and others have dietary restrictions. Children from families that actually need this program will certainly not be going hungry. Hopefully returning to normal will provide higher quality food as well. In addition, if a child does forget their lunch money or packed lunch, no child should go hungry. It should be automatic that they will be fed. The parents only need to be addressed if it becomes a pattern.
The comments stating that a class divide will be an issue, apparently didn't watch the video very closely. Or understand that children from low income families already know that they are from low income families.
My outrage is that the minimum wage hasn't been raised in 13 years! The feds can apparently raise interest rates as often as they feel like it, with little or no justification. But raising the minimum wage to a living wage seems to be some major problem for our government. I call BS!

I had a girlfriend tell me about why the free lunch program is important. It's heart breaking to hear how common it is for people to not afford 3 meals a day. Even my college students in my own classes tell me stories of saving up just enough money to get to college but having to scrape money to eat. Or sometimes they're so used to not eating, it's not an issue for them.

Usually anything someone didn't want was passed to someone who did and piles of unwanted bananas oranges and milk cartons dotted the tops of trash cans on trays for any takers (I would drink like 4 cartons of chocolate milk lol). I've never experienced a food fight either. How can you say they waste food that's already been packaged and delivered for eating to the school?

I don’t agree with free lunches for all if you’re making more than say 100 grand a year you don’t need it you should be able to afford lunches for your kids. I would support raising those financial limits to be sure that every kid that needs it gets it. But if you’re making more than 100 or $150,000 a year it’s not our job to support your kids. But I would say raise those limits so that most middle and lower income families that could use the help receive it.

My father was a lawyer and my mom a teacher at another school. I didn’t qualify for free lunch and I often didn’t have access to food at home to make anything with. I often got “Pack an apple!” as a response from my mother when I asked. I watched as my classmates would eat two bites of their free lunch and throw it away as I stared greedily with hunger. By high school I got smarter. I noticed the free lunch goers would rather buy chips and soda than the lunch provided so if I managed to find a dollar which was not enough for a lunch it would be enough for their soda and chips. I’d exchange my dollar with them so I could get their lunch. They liked the deal and I got fed.
