Him and Viv were great mates on the pitch and off. An amazing Windies team.
Wasn’t a cricket fan, and still not a cricket fan, Botham and Richard’s, absolutely fantastic, part of my childhood, marvellous times
1984 and the video quality -incredible!
It's interesting to see how differently cricket was shot in those days. There's still a bit of the old BBC 'one camera' approach in live play with the Nursery End camera and square boundary camera angles presented as supplementary.
@@alfredjohnson2647 Double ended coverage didn’t arrive on the BBC until the late 80s. They were slow to move with the times.
Great video quality, yes, but I don't know why they messed up original aspect ratio. It would have looked so much better.
How about that banter between Beefy and Viv? Fantastic friends off the pitch, great competitors on it.
I'm loving Viv's gardening, only a few feet from the bowlers crease.
Somerset colleagues !
@@virendrasinghrawat5303 Yeah they shared a room together in the early days as well... Big Joel was there with them for many years too
Sir Viv's face is like, "Just one bad day. No need to improve or care about technique. I'm the best in the world"
Your words made my day dude excellent
That was missing another set of stumps
@@raheelakhtar7 look in the book🤣
Think he was more like, "Missing legs stump by a mile!"
@@HHM706
What it says in the book doesn't make it a good decision.
Botham. A true giant of the game.
and one of the few Lords worth retaining in the tax payer funded £360 a day per Lord sleepy upper house.
By way of context, Botham's 2nd innings figures were 20.1-2-117-0, with West Indies winning by 9 wickets and Greenidge finishing 214 not out.
Because Viv and Joel got him on the Jamaican rum, the naughty boys.
Oh well, perhaps he should have had his first innings figures expunged from the record books.
Botham and Kapil are very similar and legends
Ian was something. The man genuinely liked the game and was a warrior on the field. He was fun to watch. A great all rounder and made cricket fun and enjoyable.
Happy days.
An 8fer against that west indies team was an amazing feat.
Kapil took 9 against same team one year before in unfriendly Indian conditions.
@@yogeshb8368 why always bring India?
@@vaibhav3402 West Indies team of 80s is greatest of all time.
Botham has very poor record against them, batting and bowling. Kapil and Imran have tremendous record against them in tests. Imran was supported by Wasim, Qadir and Sarfaraj for most of his career. But Kapil did it single handedly on dead pitches. Even Hadlee has better record.
Botham did all against weak Aussies of 80s or in English conditions. Except Bombay test he has pretty ordinary record in India.
@@yogeshb8368You are crazy just crazy one the great all rounders ever won more games single handily then any them blokes you mentioned. West Indies didn’t lose a series for 10 years none them lads you mentioned won a series against them bat hadlee and the windies were robbed there as everyone knows
@@michaelmulhall5007 Lol Imran Khan defeated windies in 1986 and 1988 almost.
Well played and well bowled Mr Botham in getting 8. For.. Well done sir all the way from australia 😎
A true legend of the world of cricket 👍👌👌
Not just any batting line up he went through! Fantastic display!
One of the top ten cricketers of all time.
Certainly
Botham was just amazing with both bat & ball to get 8 wickets against that incredible batting line up 👏🏴👏👏
Well, yes and no. The Windies were so aggressive that you always had a chance of getting them out, although there was also an equal chance that you would get totally destroyed and humiliated as well.
Botham was in a league of his own. Awesome and loved him agains the Aussies. He was a beast.
Would. Have missed Leg Stump for sure, in case of Viv Richards’ dismissal but great to see both Ian and Viv having a banter on the field ! Those (till the early 2000s) were the Golden days of Cricket 🏏.
I'm not sure about that. I'm sure Viv got away with plenty of decisions down the years
Yeah it probably was clipping leg
in the past, I thought it was an inside edge but in this montage, it's clearly not. Viv's front foot is on the crease, in swinger and off-cutting but nowadays I think it would be umpires call. Definitely not a howler. look at 3.05 and see where it hits him. out.
We need daily Beef highlights I say. ECB should be uploading highlights from before 2005 more often. Good from the Lord's crew - never forget Lord Both!
Wow, great camera work. I felt like I was there! Could almost smell the grass, beer, ciggies and after shave.
I do recall this match.Inspite of botham's this performance, England lost this test too due to memorable batting of Garden Grinige. He made double hundred in that match.
David Gower declared 19 mins into the final day under pressure from above, who wanted a win. England lost 2 wickets in the 19 mins of play on last day, declaring 9 wkts down. The only wicket was a run out.
With hindsight England should have used their last 3 wkts to run the clock down.
Gordon Greenidge
I remember it well. He also top scored in England's first innings with 81 and they still lost the match by nine wickets.
Going into the match they were 1 - 0 down. This made it two and they fell apart after that, losing the series 5 - 0 just as they did in the return series in the Caribbean in 1986. They had set the Windies 342 to win on the last day with nearly 80 overs to get them in but they cantered home with at least a good ten overs to spare.
Gordon Greenidge blasted 214 not out, with Larry Gomes finishing on 92 unbeaten as well, just for good measure.
I saw a One Day International between the two sides earlier in the summer and Viv Richards blasted 189 out of their total of 272 for 9, they having been a 166 for 9 at one stage.
Even as early as that I had the feeling of mene mene tarkel upharsin for the upcoming summer.
They had competed really well for the first four days and let's not forget when they declared on the fourth evening they were setting the West Indies 340 to win, a total that probably 99 times out of a 100 with the time left in the game they wouldn't lose although I'm sure even all these years later David Gower wishes he'd batted for another hour on the fifth morning. It all started to unravel in the first session of the fifth day when the bowling was absolutely atrocious and allowed the Windies to get of to a flyer and in the end they reached the total pretty comfortably.
Actually Botham made 81 in the second innings.
@@martinkelly6709 England declared 9 wickets down on the fifth morning. I don't think a Neil Foster and Bob Willis partnership would go on for an hour against Malcolm Marshall and Joel Garner.
@@119beaker Yes, you're right, just checked. I thought I remembered Allan Lamb being left not out when they declared but he got out early fifth morning only adding a single to his overnight 109. It might have only been 10 and 11 left in but they should have still batted until being bowled out IMO.
That 189 at Old Trafford was incredible - amazing team
Botham is a legend. He had the knack of making things happen with bat, ball or in the field.
A great image at around 2:12 - a Lord bowling with two Knights batting.
The hero of this then fourteen year old. I remember watching this; the Windies at their best. Who thought that within the next decade, they would become fallible!
People forget what a great fielder Mike Gatting was, particularly close to the wicket.
Reminded me of the drop catch at silly point off Ian Salisbury’s bowling against India in 1993. Must have been painful all the more then.
what about peter willey!
Ian Botham, as bowler was also very successful bowler. He got lot of wickets test and one day cricket. Great alrounder of cricket history.
That was Botham’s greatest weakness against the West Indies, he was always trying to joke around with Viv Richards. Didn’t do Botham any good and took the focus away from his game against the West Indies. Admittedly he was brilliant in this match but all to few for a man so gifted.
Would it have made a difference? The WI in 1984 were the best team in history. They did not lose an entire test in 1984......against the best two sides that year, Australia and England. Australia were mauled at home and away......and England were whitewashed at home for the first time since the early 1950s
It wasn't his fault the rest of his team were not up to the task. That was the real problem.
Beefy at his peak. Or near enough to it. My cricket hero growing up. The one player that would stand toe to toe with that great West Indies team.
But he has not consistency his career graph declines with his age, the only man not only to stand hut has potential to defeat west indies was imran khan
@@siddhantmishra9980 sometimes stats are misleading. Look at how many times Botham changed a game or even a series in England’s favour with some great bowling or batting.
@@mrkipling2201 No doubt but he is not the only one who challenged west indies
@@siddhantmishra9980 totally agree with you. Imran Khan was a great player and definitely challenged that great West Indies team as well. Alan Border was another one.
@@mrkipling2201 🤘🤘
84s test gives a positive vibes of cricket being a gentleman game
That was when the WIndies were nearly unbeatable. Great bowling!
Ian Botham and Bill beaumont. When question of sport was at its best.
Great stuff - I always thought that it was a recurring nightmare of mine that Derek Pringle played for England though, but watching this, it was actually true!
Between his debut in 82 and his retirement in 1992, Pringle had a better bowling average than a certain IT Botham.
@@yacsem in what? Pringle averaged 36 in tests to Beefs 28, and took 313 more wickets! Bang average
@@bollybon7916 Between 82 and 92 in tests. Botham's record was not great once he put on weight and had back trouble (as well as all his other lunacies). Pringle and Botham both finished in 92 v Pakistan.
@@yacsem a fat Beef was still worth two Pringles. Come on, he was a journeyman County cricketer, had no place in internationals.
@@bollybon7916 I never claimed Pringle was better; I simply stated that over his ten-year test career he had a better bowling average than Botham in the same period. This is a statistical fact. Plus, he was more than a journeyman county cricketer - bowling average of 26.5 in FC cricket and six county championships. Better test average than Malcolm and Tufnell as well, incidentally.
Legend # Best Allrounder and my fav Commintator
Legend is always a legend
He could bowl pretty quick when he wanted to. I only ever got to see him at the end of his career when he was not much over medium pace. I would have loved to have seen him at his peak. Loved the interplay between him and Viv Richards.
And the greatest WI side too. Such a great era that was all around.
Beautiful bowling action
Shame he couldn't be arsed looking after his fitness. He bowled some absolute rubbish in his last four or five years. Out of the 4 all-rounders, Botham's bowling deteriorated the most. Even Kapil Dev was quicker than him at the end of his career.....
@@davewalkeden6932 that's saying something though isn't it. Kapil Dev deliberately slowed down coz he was the only quick in the Indian team at the moment and if botham was slower than that, it must've been a horrible prospect
Good old days when cricket was cricket
Forgot to mention. So great to hear the insightful comments of Mr R Benaud, for those too young to have experienced him, if Richie said something was great, it was great. Unlike so many commentators today who spend their time hyping up stuff.
Richie had the experience to know when something was exceptional.
Just brilliant to watch ,what a great all rounder he was ,and great England team ,we had in the 80s ,botham, gatting, gower,Willis ,gooch, boycott,Randall, knot,Taylor etc
He was the reason I fell in love with cricket, the greatest English allrounder ever IMO. Someone who, in a very average team, could grab a game by the scruff of the neck and change it.
No. We didn’t. Boycott , Taylor and Knott finished After 1982. Gooch banned till 1985, Randall and Willis finished in 1984. Despite some big batting names (Botham, Lamb, Gooch, Gatting, Gower) the rest weren’t up to much and weren’t helped by poor selections.
@@unusg1 It was a period of transformation in the game. World Series cricket meant anyone who couldn't adapt had their days numbered, Boycott stands out, still a great player, but of a different game. WIndies had a GREAT team, undisputably great. But the entire game around them was in transition. There was West Indies, and then there was the rest. Australia lost Lillee and Thomo, India suffered after Gavaskar retired, Hadlee & Crowe carried NZ, Imran Khan carried Pakistan, No South Africa. England weren't as bad as you suggest here. Facing this West Indies at THAT time you have to put far more down to their skill.
@@stevechapman2553 Every sport is always in transition.
Yup, I remember all this. I was a 12 year-old burgeoning cricket fanatic at the time. But the thing I remember most is what Gordon Greenidge did to this England attack on the 5th day. His innings was incredible and this West Indies side became the focus of my hero worship (to this day) - and the standard against which I have measured all other sides ever since. Including Australia in their subsequent pomp.
Just remember, this was not a bad England side and they were thrashed five nil in this series, yet went on to beat a decent Aussie side one year later. That's how good the Windies were back then!
Other than Botham England didn't really have an attack, Willis and Miller never played for England again and Pringle should never have.
ian is a true gentleman, i love him
the class moment when iva walks down the strip to flatten the pitch...
miss those days.
loved the bouncer to Viv Richards, his old mate!
Botham so nearly got that prized hundred against the West Indies and it would have been at Lord’s too. 19 runs short of a 100 at Lord’s against the West Indies. Imagine he thinks about what might have been everyday. I was 15 and I wanted him to get it so much.
Botham in his prime is the greatest all rounder ever. Time and time again he did it in the games when it was most needed. Injuries in the late 80s and early 90s meant he didn’t quite have the same impact as the first 10 years of his career. In his heyday he was Different class.
best allrounder in history
Really nice to see a good qaulity vid from BITD
Ian Botham the cricket legend should have been hired by ECB as the bowling coach of England team during 2023 World Cup.
Beefy is great. He and Viv are brothers in arm. Amazing friendship
Ian Botham ...top man. Met him several times, and he's one of my sporting heroes. His wine is nice too.
I’ve got to say, that was impressive bowling.
The Viv dismissal, I've never seen an umpire give an batsman out before the fielding team had appealed. Reminds me of a junior match where the "star" bowler had his dad as the umpire "Howzat Dad?" "Thats out son"
Bothams best days between 1980-86 went down hill after that clearly the best batsman amongst the all rounders.
at his peak, he was the best swing bowler. his book taught me how to bowl outswingers, but i couldnt master inswing.
Umpiring was spot on. No DRS needed back then.
Beefys prome as a bowler 77 to 81....he was such a clever bowler
Brilliant spell .....second innings Mr Greenige hit a double ton in one day to win the game. After England declared with a 300+ lead .
When cricket was cricket and not a money making machine like football. When you could relax watching and listening to a test match on the BBC, especially listening to the radio.
@Bruce-1956
Times change.
@@hyena131 unfortunately and not always for the better.
@@Bruce-1956
Whether you think the change is good or bad, it's best to accept it and move on. Or invent a time machine.
For any high profile international sport to flourish, money is an integral part of it as it's not a charity. The days of endless, dreamy, lazy afternoon cricket footage on BBC are long gone as it was no longer viable or sustainable. I'm not a big fan of T20 cricket (but will watch international games), but it has given cricket a huge boost (especially the IPL) both in popularity and keeping the game alive financially. Cricket had to modernize/keep up with the times or die. Look at the big picture.
Test cricket is still fantastic. And always will be. Look no further than the extraordinary 2019 Ashes match at Headlingly. And the 4th Test, Brisbane, January 2021 between IN and AUS. Test cricket at it's very very best. Enjoy it instead of longing for a never to return past.
such wonderful memories as a boy in england at lords watching test matches against the west indies
Viv Richards got a shocker of an LBW decision. The umpire's finger was up even before Botham finished choking his appeal!
Some interesting umpiring decisions there.
This brings me joy and happiness. I love I T Botham 🙂
For me this West Indies touring squad of 1984 captained by the great Clive Lloyd was the greatest test team of all time. 2 great openers, a brilliant middle order and the most ferocious attacking bowlers. Those 3 Marshall, Holding and Garner were the most formidable, imagine having to face those 3 one after the other? A brilliant all round team.
And the West Indies went on to win the Test by 8 wickets…… a very, very good team. Possibly one of the best Test teams ever
@2:10 Superb!
Can’t argue with that really
The good old days
An English great and a really nice guy, I’ve met him a few times when he had a pheasant shoot with Liam at Sawley near Ripon.
Didnt stop the WIndies beating us by 9 wickets
Yes Sir Viv it was missing leg stump. Took it with the good grace of an immortal. Sir Ian isn't a bad bowler either. Or batsman...or slip fielder
Na it was clipping leg
@@blahblah6227 Would have missed a second leg stump!
With all the due respect for Ian, this feat could only be achieved in England.
The umpires are pretty much appealing with Botham.
Startling flexibility from gatting!!
Gatt's catch at short leg looked like it was on the bounce in the replay 😅
I'm not sure about that second wicket. Although he was going back it was hitting him quite high on the pad and you could see middle and off stump too. You'd definitely go for the review these days.
WI still won this series 5-0.
Botham was my favourite all rounder. Loved watching him bat in my childhood ❤️
It’s a fake channel people
Botham in his pomp. The greatest england allrounder. Legend forever.
This one is what we call an umpire. Umpire nowadays should learn the lot from the past.
The best part of this performance was seeing that magnificent piece of lip fur wafting in the air.
That decision viv got was shocking
Wonderful stuff. But the front on camera is only used for replays? Why not permanently use the cameras at both ends?
The Windies blackwashed England 5-0. This test they thrashed England by 9 wickets. The Windies were awesome throughout the summer of 1984.
After Botham and Richards retired ...it was the end of cricket
Larry Gomes wicket was not out. Botham's back foot lands partly on the return crease so the delivery should have been called a no ball by the umpire. Can be clearly seen at 1:22
Beef's bowling was his strength....he was a really really good bowler. His batting was often impressive and always interesting....he used to really annoy me by being so cavalier and getting himself out before building an innings. He was the fireworks rather than the long burn of the bonfire. Sometimes fireworks are what is needed...other times a bonfire is the order of the day...
His slip catching at 2nd slip was tremendous.
Can someone tell me who the commentator is for the third wicket please, the catch at short leg .... its bugged me for years as I grew up watching the cricket on tv and I cant remember who this guy is....thank you
Did he cut the return crease with the bat-pad wicket? Still a tremendous spell of swing bowling
I wonder if a review would have been available Viv Richards lbw would have been shown to have been going down leg side?
It looked like it to me (and the England team by the way they curtailed their appeal). Definitely a bad decision in my opinion.
Literally the 1 percent people who’s reading may ur parents live more than 💯 years with happiness and smile 😊 ❤️❤️❤️😊😊❤️❤️❤️😊😊
Lol does anyone remember how this match ended. WI had the last laugh.
I think Chris Smith ( Robin Smith's) brother was also playing this match.
I've been watch this match live 🤩
Viv would have been reprieved by DRS! :D
Given Beefy decided wiping the ball on the underarm sleeve, it's no wonder the West Indies didn't want to be anywhere near it!
There wasn’t much else for England to cheer about in this series.
He did not get ten in the match as the West Indies only lost Haynes in the second innings to win by nine wickets. The West Indies team was utterly dominant for all the 80s
Viv is badass. No helmet......😮
Sir Ian eas genuinely fast yjrm days.
The only time England really threatened in that series - until the 4th innings....
The greatest bowler I know till now 💥
Greatest really 🙄
Then u haven't watched enough cricket son...
This is a bit out of context. England were outclassed in this series 5-0 by the greatest cricket team ever assembled.
