One of my best friends is a Big Island native and lives near Hilo and the family was friends with Bruddah Waltah. She was crushed when she found out about his passing.
I'm orignially from Hawaii, I love how you love the culture and the music, thanks for sharing your love with the world. Iam Tongi is a gift to the world right now with his amazing musical gift and love for people!!
Thank you for sharing the story. A person is never too old to learn something interesting. Iam's voice is my addiction, and because of me listening to Iam's songs, I have to play it every night for my granddaughter. Guys, she is 10 years old, and this is the way she fell asleep. We love IAM ❤
I was shocked to see the story behind the song Lady of Waihole. My sister-in-law's brother wife is Kathy Saito. I can't wait to share this to her. Thank you. I love this song too!!!
I love the way you want to learn the story behind the artists. This compilation is wonderful. The fact that you make some mistakes in pronunciation is okay. IAM is a "once in a lifetime" experience, especially for me, as I'm in my elderly years. I'm just so thankful that The Most High allowed me to be around to experience this beautiful soul called IAM... I hope his is continually blessed with longevity, love and peace! ❤❤❤
Iam will be the most unforgettable winner of idol hands down. Yessar making rounds and just seen him with Megan Danielle in Nashville, the humility this kid has is infectious. Sweet lady of waihole is one of the many go to at Island family get together. The chorus was pretty much a theme growing up
We are big on respect on the islands. And the amount of work you do to truly understand our culture with music will always afford you an invite to the lūʻau, our version of a big BBQ.
this tribute to the Sweet Lady and my bruddah is beautiful... I had the honor and love of learning what Hawaiian reggae mele is about.... its all about "The Return..." to better times and lives in simpler more beautiful times.. Hence our cd was named Ka Ho`ina... Walter you are forever in my heart .. ʻO Bruddah Waltah aloha wau iā ʻoe a mahalo wau i ka ʻike ʻana iā ʻoe he ohana (Bruddah Waltah i love you and am honored to know you as ohana)
You are so worth following! God's light just shines from within you, and yes, Iam is the man of the hour. His voice grabs your heart and makes you feel so good! xx
Aloha I grew up in Kahalu'u just before Waiahole and I had many friends and grew up with her grandchildrens. She was known and called by many of us "grandma Matayoshi." She was well loved and respected. She was not only strict with her grandkids but the neighborhood kids as well. The sweet fund memories of recalling her coming down walking Waiahole Valley Road with her wheelbarrow loaded with fruits. My dad was the of founders and director of KEY Project, he was also community leader in the. Kahalu'u - Waiahole community and spoke person.
Seeing you jamming to the music and swinging to the rhythm making you smile and enjoying yourselves…you did the most out awesomeness job researching the history of this song..you yourself deserve a good tap on your shoulder for being a great person with so much compassion and heartfelt sense toward people…with great appreciation ALOOHA to you❤️❤️🤙🤙🙏

We love you and your dedication of bringing history of Hawaii to us. Your pronunciation does not minimize your work. Thanks. And we pray for Uncle Waltah. Thanks sweet Lady. You turned out just fine Sir.
Singing is Melvin Amina 3 scoops of Aloha the original makaha sons of niihau with IZ bass Analu also with 3 scoops and IZ till the end keys Gaylord Holomalia also with Iz and country comfort and Kalapana they had beautiful music
I thought I needed glasses for a second there cus that wasn't Braddah Waltah. Mahalo for the reminder, I totally forgot about 3 Scoops of Aloha and Mel Amina's version.

My friend, you have such a sweet spirt. Love your pure and beautiful love for music. I can see in your eyes how kind you are. Be blessed beyond measure
Growing up in the 80's, I remember seeing " sweet lady of Waiole"...my ohana use to drive around the island on special occasions...it was a big thing going around the island!!...thank you Braddah for doing a reaction of this song..brought back nice memories. Aloha and God bless 🤙
Mahalo for bringing light to this song and its background! It was a song well known in the 80ʻs by the locals, especially in a bar called Jubilees in Kalihi! Braddah Waltah was an awesome singer and entertainer - much love to him! But that man in the video is not Braddah Waltah. Although I often sang and danced to this song, I never knew the story of the Lady of Waiahole, so thank you for sharing this story! Wikipedia is not a reliable source, but your effort to cover the history of this song is very much appreciated, and we are so thankful for Iam bringing our Hawaiian/local culture and music to the world! We donʻt expect you to pronounce the Hawaiian words correctly, but thank you for your effort to do so and for acknowledging that you may be saying it wrong. In time, Iʻm sure you will get it. Thank you for sharing the history of our Island Reggae music and for this acknowledgement of Braddah Waltah. Much aloha for him! Thank you Iam!
My most sincere apologies. I have edited the video and title to give props to Mel Amina and 3 Scoops of Aloha. I appreciate that heads up ✊🏽 Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and leave a comment. 🌎🤙🏽
Appreciate your dedication to your craft and even through the grammatical errors of our language, you have displayed a genuine understanding of pure Aloha from your heart. Rock on my Bruddah…Rock on!!! ❤🤙🏽🌸

OMG! I absolutely love this version from Iam! How did I not see this one already? I mean, Bruddah Waltah's version will always be a classic.....BUT DAYUM!!!
Your so awesome your Aloha beams my bruddah!! Watching you jam to Sweet Lady of Waiahole was fun.. your right it's one of those songs that nevwr leaves your mind.. And Thank you God for TWUR..
I grew up listening to his music as a keiki, listening to it on the radio, this song right here has so many memories attached to it, hearing my mama sing to it while cooking
bro you gonna get all the hawaiian love. 1st you respect the culture 2nd you take the time to learn and educate 3rd your positive energy. hawaiians have some of the most talented people in the world but they aren't about showing off that's why not too much is known about their music only in the islands. you would be welcomed with open arms to hawaii if you ever visit!
Thank you so much for showing us the back story of the song Sweet Lady of Waiahole. I live in Hawaii and I didn’t know the story so thank you so much for educating me.
Iam is really something. He is from a millennium generation with so much respect to his culture and music. Taken an unknown song to AI stage was an appreciation to his culture and local musician.
Another great video. I believe Three Scoops of Aloha is the original and recorded it before braddah Waltah. Three scoops recorded it in 1986 on it’s Feeling good in the island album and Braddah Waltah recorded it in 1990. Braddah Mel Amina (the lead guy in the video) formed Three scoops of Aloha with Abe Keala. Mel and Braddah IZ are cousins. Mel was part of Braddah IZ’s band and also was a member of the Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau was IZ, IZ’s brother Skippy, and Moon Kauakahi. A lot of people only remember Braddah Waltah’s version that came after Three Scoops recorded it because it is 🔥.🤙🏾
Txs for this. I love learning history/culture of music. Check out Iam's recent live performance at The Valentine in Nashville. I'm wanting him to get in the studio to record. Love this kid to pieces and ready to BUY all he puts out!
My pleasure! I’m glad you enjoy the content. I’ve added your recommendation to my list. I appreciate your suggestion. Me too! Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and leave a comment. 🌎🤙🏽
Okay, this song was made popular in the Samoan islands by Jerome Grey, local artist who relocated to Hawaii and then California. (That’s how I know this song) His son, Mata Grey, is the one playing guitar on stage with Iam at his homecoming concert (left of stage…Iam’s right). Mata is part of Common Kings…hugely popular in Hawaii, Cali, Samoa, and wherever Polys be at. Anyway take a listen to Jerome’s version…it’s pretty good!!!😊
We always blast this song on the way to Waiahole Poi Factory. BTW, I’m going to Ohana Day in a few weeks where I’m finally gonna see our boy Iam perform live. Gonna be lit 🔥
I lived on the island Oahu all my life and this song was a karaoke favorite. Thanks for digging deep finding the roots of this song, it was a nice story behind the song, never knew that til now, thanks to you. It gives the song a lot more meaning when I hear it now. I'm glad your liking our island jams.
Awesome story, so good to hear. Mahalo Brother Waltz. And Thank you for sharing this. God Bless and Protect Iam Tongi, Gotta lava Tongi, YESSAAH. Just heard Brother Waltz in HOSPICE?
Mahalo for this, always wanted to know the history of this song, good job even if you made mistakes, you apologized and corrected yourself right on bradh
Aloha Braddah!! I loved this reaction!!! Braddah Waltah is a treasure in Hawaii!. Thank you for always wanting to learn and you have always been so respectful! I would love to hear you react to a song that Braddah Iz made famous called Hawaii 78 and was written by Mickey Ioane. There is 2 really good version the one Iz and one by Mana Maoli. Mana Maoli is a collaboration of different artists as well as our Keiki (children). I think that you would find it touching. As always aloha and mahalo!!

This song was writen on an napkin in a car on the way to the studio where 3 scoops was recoding their latest album an asked my braddah Gordon for help, they needed a song to fill in a gap for their reconding, he play it for them but they didn't use it. Braddah Walter use it on their next album. we all use to see Fujiko selling all kinds of fruits an vegetable rain or shine she was alway out there.
Mahalo for that info! That guy in the video singing does not look like Braddah Waltah. I know he is a musician, but what is his name? Is that 3 Scoops of Aloha in the video?
@@AloeA4 his name is Melvin Amina with 3scoops, they was da first to record it. Bradda Waltah also came out wiff it too, a pile of Kacoroaching goin on in Hawaii. haha it's all good. Am Idol called an asked to use it at da concert at Turttle Bay Resort. our Ohana are humble an honored Iam used it. Aloooha. RR4L68
I feel it, grew up in reggae music, third world, Bob Marley, steel pulse... And my brotha from anotha motha, roots of creation ( tony Moses) Jah rasta fari
Mahalo for sharing and for your appreciation and excitement for learning more about our music and culture! I hope one day you can see Hawai’i for yourself and meet Iam along the way, that would be awesome!
I was born and raised in Hawai'i and you were close with the pronunciation. Main thing is you tried. Thanks for sharing our history. Your sensitivity and desire to get it right earned my like abd sub! 🍍😎🤙🌴🥥🌺🌈
Iam sang Sweet Lady of Waiahole at his homecoming concert on north shore in honor of the fact that that song is well known and beloved especially to that side of the island. Waiahole is a few miles away from Kahuku where Iam is from and the concert was also near his hometown
Aloha my bruddah. I have just a few corrections to offer you. The three guys in the blue aloha shirts are The 3 Scoops of Aloha, the first group to record this song (Gordon Broad did not record it: that's why there is no version available. He would only play it in a live concert). Also, Bruddah Waltah was born in Keaukaha (kay-ow-kah-hah) near Hilo (hee-low). The Sweet Lady of Waiahole is Fujiko Shimabukuro Matayoshi (she married Matayoshi), and she was a widow with eight kids. I grew up down the road from them. I was a kid when she passed away. This song is a Jawaiian song, because of the blend of Jamaican reggae beats with Hawaiian acoustic guitar. On a separate note, Bruddah Waltah is a Jawaiian artist known for this island blend of music. His version of this song has a heavy emphasis on keyboards, because Bruddah Waltah is a keyboardist. Butch Helemano is a Hawaiian REGGAE artist from the 80's. If you listen to his music, you will see that it has a definite reggae vibe (not too much of an island blend). He was known to write original music, because he worried about copyright infringement. He wrote a song called "One Banana" which talks about the lifestyle of country living in Hawaii. Whether "Sweet Lady of Waiahole" inspired it is uncertain, but it has a similar theme and vibe. Mahalo for your reactions. I love the messages of positivity and the positive vibrations you promote. One love, my bruddah. Aloha
My pleasure! I appreciate your kind words. I’m glad you enjoy the content. I appreciate that heads up ✊🏽 Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and leave a comment. 🌎🤙🏽
@@errolsteadfast Just a little more info on The 3 Scoops of Aloha: Mel Amina (the lead singer who told the story about how the song was recorded) is a first cousin to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (AKA Bruddah Iz). Analu 'Aina (the guy on the bass guitar) is also a cousin. I believe Bruddah Waltah 'Aipolani is related to them also. Among Hawaiians, it is common to have many musicians from the same family. The Hawaiian language did not become written until 1840, so much of our history is recorded in song. That is why music is important to Hawaiians: it was our way of recording history (through oral traditions).
Sad news to report - just heard on the radio this afternoon that Bruddah Waltah, the father of Hawaiian reggae, passed away from cancer. RIP Bruddah Waltah. Your legacy will never be forgotten.
Oh my Gosh! Mus7c in the days when I was 21 Kapena sang Jawaiaian for my first time. I went down to Kamehameha Hotel by the pool where Kapena played. As ya young 21 year old girl growing up with Hawaiian music and Bob Marley was breaking through.

bro you gonna get all the hawaiian love. 1st you respect the culture 2nd you take the time to learn and educate 3rd your positive energy. hawaiians have some of the most talented people in the world but they aren't about showing off that's why not too much is known about their music only in the islands. you would be welcomed with open arms to hawaii if you ever visit!

Aloooha. RR4L68

Iam sang Sweet Lady of Waiahole at his homecoming concert on north shore in honor of the fact that that song is well known and beloved especially to that side of the island. Waiahole is a few miles away from Kahuku where Iam is from and the concert was also near his hometown
💯 YESSAHHH‼️ Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and leave a comment. 🌎🤙🏽
Aloha
