    EDIT: it seems like the linked lead tape has been updated from 2g/inch to 1g/inch
    Original:
    The linked lead tape is likely the wrong weight just like in the last video. I hope we can get confirmation on this as I know multiple people who have been affected by buying that tape and testing it out and ending up with something way too heavy.
    He said the lead tape adds about 0.5 ounces to the paddle weight, that's 14.1748 grams.
    14.1748/2 = 7.0874 grams per side
    7.0874/2 = 3.5437 grams per strip (since there are 2 strips stacked on each side)
    3.5437/5 = 0.70874 grams per inch.
    I'm assuming the linked tape is wrong instead of Ben being wrong because he's probably weighed his paddle before and after.
    The common lead tape weights I've seen in grams per inch are 0.5, 1, and 2.
    The 0.70874 may be including the added weight from the grip tape and electrical tape since his 0.5 ounce value sounded like it was derived from weighing the paddle after the completed setup.
    So that means the closest lead tape weight would be the 0.5 grams / inch which is 4x lighter than what you'd get if you used the (OLD) linked lead tape at 2g/inch.
    I'm also kind of surprised as a former engineer he eyeballed the first 5 inch cut and eyeballed the alignment on each side meaning there will be some inconsistency each time he sets this up. It is annoying to try to measure spots on the edge guard though, it would be awesome if a company put some small measurement markings on the edge guard to make it easier to test out different lead tape alignments.

      @webstermiller7765 Рік тому +4

      You forgot to include the overgrip in your calc as well. Yonex SuperGraps weight 5 grams untrimmed. He tears off a bit so the overgrip is probably 4 of those 14 grams leaving only 10 grams of lead tape. This just further confirms he's using 1/2 gram/inch lead tape.

    • @Luk3Ry4n
      @Luk3Ry4n 11 місяців тому +1

      I'd be willing to bet he's using 0.5g / inch lead tape. If the final paddle weight is coming in at around 8.5-8.6 oz, thats the only feasible way to explain the final weight with that many strips of lead tape. Whoever is running his YT channel needs to get on the same page as BJ lol

      @luke9822 8 місяців тому

      The bigger question to me is why add two layers of tape when you can buy tape that is twice as heavy? The only thing I can think of is that he wants the option to adjust down if we wants and doesn't want to have to keep multiple weights in his bag.
      What's the logic in using 1/2" over 1/4" tape? Spread out the weight distribution? Given how everything is eyeballed with his measurements, you'd think that level of precision with the weight distribution wouldn't be a consideration.

    • @neilmm
      @neilmm 8 місяців тому

      @@luke9822 I think it's because on the hyperion he used to use 2 layers on the throat but 1 layer on top, but if he had a heavier tape for one layer then he wouldn't be able to use the length of tape he wanted on the top corners without it being too heavy.
      But now, with the perseus being more powerful, he doesn't use the one layer at the top corners, but still just uses the same tape he has around.
      From personal subjective experience, I think the half inch feels better with the weight spread out more evenly on the edge. But it's easy to wrongly attribute some bad feeling to that when it's actually just your play or something else. Idk if Ben chose that wider tape intentionally, or just chose the most popular option available, which is 1g or 2g at 1/2 inch.

    A quick question to everyone...If Ben answers it, even better. Does adding an overgrip change the way the paddle plays? I understand it might add a little weight. But should it change the behavior like lead tape does or does it not impact at all?

    • @BenJohns_pb
      @BenJohns_pb  Рік тому +6

      It will add some weight in the handle, shifting the overall balance/swingweight slightly. So in that sense it changes. But also the lower down the weight the less the weight physically affects the ball. So not much overall significant difference .

      @@RSH137 Because adding lead tape is such a common practice among even just decent amateur pickleball players, that the manufacturer understands correctly that players prefer to handle it themselves, just like any other aftermarket customizations (overgrip, etc). I know I do. It clearly doesn't take much longer than a couple minutes, and it's kinda relaxing.

    • @LowDinksHijinxPickleball
      @LowDinksHijinxPickleball 10 місяців тому

      @@RSH137 Also, the stability you are referring to is due to the increased twist weight when lead tape is added to the sides. Other players prefer to add lead tape to the far top end, which increases the swing weight more than the twist weight, making your hand speed slower (think of a hammer, with all the weight at he end), but also makes your shots much more powerful. So it's a compromise and different players prefer different settings, and different paddles favor different tweaks as well.
