It is very different. M4 has an S55, which is a strengthened N55 engine. The new generation 3 litre petrol is a B58 which comes from an unified platform off which they create 3, 4 and 6 cylinder petrol and diesel motors. It is completely redesigned, and according to many stronger built (so that the same basic architecture can handle a high compression diesel setup) and better sounding. I'm seeing nice CPO models from 2017/2018 going for around $40k Canadian. That's a definite bargain. I'd avoid the 550i because of the issues with the N63. Those engines need a whole lot of preventative things to make them run good. The B58 is a better choice with regards to motor.
First time watcher and now a subscriber too. I find your witty sarcasm/opinions and great knowledge to be a positive. While I have driven BMW's for 20 years, most channels are so pro-BMW. Getting a more balanced opinion is good, at least IMO! Liked the video, including narrative, filming, etc. Good job.
The key thing is a complete fad with BMW. I owned a 750i and it had that key parking device, which I never used, and to be honest the key fob was to big, it never really worked and is not proving anything. That said, I do like the look of this new 5-Series. It is probably what I will be looking to get in September once the 68-Plate becomes available. Nice motor, not interested in the stupid key fob, all I am interested in, is how it goes, how it looks, economy and how safe it is.
Hmmm. Stopped listening when he criticised the I-drive in favour of touch control. I've driven enough touch control cars to know which style will kill more people due to drivers taking their eyes off the road....
I worked for Thrifty in Stansted this year for a few months. We had a few 530e hybrid models. Fantastic relaxing cars to drive with this powertrain. Made the commonplace 520 or 530d's sound like rattly dumpertrucks.
As I said: for this big a car, storage is moderate at best. As for What Car reviews, their opinions are also quite moderate. I'm sure as a proud owned of a BMW you'll never complain about it, but most mass market compact cars have better storage.
I have a 730d and I'd agree with Marek - the latest BMWs have poor storage. My old 520d was better at storing the odds and ends. It's ok for some keys, sunglasses, and a wallet etc but big bottles of water... not a chance!
Well I think that the cubby spaces are a bit poor, but it's in pair with Mercedes, and you got a manual of the car within the idrive so you don't really need to walk around with it...
Interestingly, these kinds of cars are solely driven by old men here in Austria. Hardly ever see a young person in a BMW, except for the 1 series. Probably due to the fact that old people got 40-50 years for saving up the dough only to throw it out for some frumpy, unstylish square-box car, instead of going on a cruise trip or 2 - weird thing ;)
It's not the feeling I got when I test drove the 530i, brilliant car my only complaint is that it only has one hook for the shopping, trust me it matters when you're used to 2. I bought it anyway arriving early January 😁
Not owning a BMW or Mercedes but it's kinda sad how both companies don't really care about their 7 Series and S-Class buyers. 5 Series literally turned into a small 7 series and the E-Class is almost the same as the S-Class (especially the Coupe). Great review. Something different but you still showed the main features. I still think the iDrive is the best. Which do you think is better? What do you think would improve on iDrive? Truth be told once I set up my profile, I'll probably save it, and never touch it again. What I particularly liked about the Porsche Panamera infotainment system, was the logic. I was used to the previous iDrive logic (what we get in the F30 3 Series), and that was good. Probably best in the business (at this price point it better be!). However now they regrouped the menus, and feel they're losing me. I have click though multi-step menus to get anywhere. It's not overwhelming, just pain in the ass. I talked with someone in BMW, who understands my reservations. I'm interested to see the new MINI Countryman (review in about a month or so). Apparently over there you're more likely to use the touchscreen, because it's closer, and therefore more natural. In 5-Series it's a stretch. In a MINI iDrive never felt right.
5:08 well i disagree. you buy a BMW for the driving experience, not for the centre-console being straight out of spaceship enterprise... you buy a BMW to drive it, not to figgle around with technology you dont need whilst driving. if you want to have such things, go for an audi or a benz, even a Tesla perhaps.
Nice vid and so accurate too. I had a 5 series and would never go back to one. Full of plastic. I traded in for a new SaaB and the moved to a Mere 220 sports coupe. Both cars beautiful and I really loved them. Then bought a Jag XF and wow, what a car. It has no comparisons. It's truly awesome. Trading in my 2015 for a new one this week. If I ever did leave Jag, I'd go back to the Mercedes. I just couldn't face 3 more years in a BMW. They are a lovely car but just not for me...
So you lime BMWs - well done, you are entitled. Do you think I have a similar right to you? If you said that you did not lime the Jag, do you honestly think I'd say to you that YOU are the problem. How insane and stupid is that! Get a life oh and a BMW
I reviewed this car shortly after driving the new (at the time) Panamera, and Porsche did have a much more modern interface. These days I'd say Mercedes is where the money is in terms of infotainment. BMW managed to make its unobtrusive enough.
BMW has bad driver interface with infotainment hmmmm, can you shed some light on which one is better. May be that can be my next car. I am stuck with bmw because of driver interface with every thing on my current F10 is so good and easy to use.
Marek Drives :) thats a pretty car, but cost double than my 530d in my country. Thanks for nice review but I still feel Bmw has best interface for drivers
I wouldn't bother getting that bulky key (which you also need to charge), especially if a phone app can do the same functions. Actually, if you just use the phone to enter and start the car, would you still need to bring any key?
Only front and back with slight correction, but no turning. Mercedes-Benz is better in this respect, because it will park perpendicular back and front remotely.
Judging by your comments all over the place, I get this impression. You're new here, so you know absolutely nothing about me. Watch a couple of my reviews (BMW, Merc, Audi), come back, then we'll talk.
No man, it couldn't beat you! Taking off your shoes should not take that long. Or even taking off them was not a good idea, if it was, then you should have count putting them on too! :D By the way your filming improved so much that I'm now watching your reviews more delightedly. Thanks.
I see, lots of thumbs down there. ;) You make one of the best overall cars in the world today, to look pretty poor. This with a bad interface department is my favorite. :) You make nice reviews there, don't know what happened here.
Ok, maybe you are right, maybe not. I hate to compare reviews with other reviews , it's the matter of personal approach but, I just watched Mat Watsons BMW 5 VS Mercedes E class video. So, iDrive interface, that can be personal thing, some one like it, someone don't, that's ok. But, you either have space at the back or you don't. In this comparison video, i saw BMW has more space at the back then Mercedes and their seats were at the same position looking at the middle pillar. Mat's review looks pretty fair to me on both awesome cars. Based on your review, it looks like my Kia Ceed have more space at the back then BMW which is impossible. :) It's interesting how the same car can look so different in two different reviews. Maybe because someone is sufficiently enthusiastic for BMW's competitors. ;)
nice independent review, ...the BMW (like a Mercedes) is a really good car, if you have some ten thousand € left and you prefere a car, where you can add some cool packages for nicely extra prices, "lets get some Extras for ...lets say 15 tousand, yippee!" (means, if I were that rich, I would still feel stupid to pay all the fancy prices for the packages), ...super steering or not...
really good honest review, I will subscribe. and the new 5 series looks real good much better than audi a6 and Mercedes class e, butt on the interior hand down to the Mercedes its the best in the class modern and fells really special.
You're assuming everyone gets to configure their car or knows what they are configuring. In some markets you just get your car (including premium cars) in "loaded", "fucking loaded" and "overloaded" trims, leaving you no real choice, what the dealer deems appropriate equipment in this market (apparently this is what happens in the UAE). As far as people configuring their cars, we're talking wealthy and busy, who will not take the time to learn and appreciate the technology. "Just give me this and this engine, leather, good audio, and make sure the leasing doesn't go over 2k a month".
Disliked this vid. How biased. You clearly have a thing against beemers lol. This model (G30) won car of the year last year. And the I drive? It’s literally the best infotainment system on the market, nothing comes close. Stop reviewing cars if you’re just gonna senselessly hate on them. You’re supposed to be impartial. First and last of your videos I’ll watch mate, I’ll stick with Mat from carwow.
Somebody got paid to do this redesign? It hardly pushed the evolution button. I sat in this car at the auto show, front and back, and my knees kept hitting the back of the seats after I set the front seat to my height. 6'. Marek you should have tested the passenger side. The dash juts outward and my friend had his knees touching the dash when I was sitting in the back seat.....brutal. Always enjoy your reviews though!!
This fella is not convincing as an automobile enthusiast and/or expert. The iDrive system is clearly superior to most other platforms and his carping about the lack of space to put his crap rings a might hollow. Look, we depend on these reviews to get accurate information before making our purchases and this fellow doesn't cut the mustard. I humbly suggest you let this guy review the lower-end stuff and get someone else to test the higher-end car models. Please!
I hate it when people review cars and complain about a feature, that you can easily turn off - If you talk with your hands, turn off gesture control…Wasn’t hard, was it? 🤷♂️
My Polish viewers claim I'm in zee German car manufacturers' pockets :) This particular set of cupholders has a mechanism enabling users to make the opening smaller to hold let's say a 250 ml can, instead of a 330 ml can. As you tighten the cupholder you can hear the "teeth" grinding against some sort of a catch. However in order to open it up again, you have to close the damn thing, otherwise you're pulling it open by force. I know there's a button on top, but it doesn't seem to do anything. The car was brand new (maybe two tests before me), so I assume the cupholder wasn't broken. YET :)
:D thanks for explaining, i imagine its one of those things that people who use it frequently, use it instinctively but i seriously laughed when you were saying "complicated" and were just simply pushing it with the fingers XD

The problem is you, NOT the BMW
So you lime BMWs - well done, you are entitled. Do you think I have a similar right to you? If you said that you did not lime the Jag, do you honestly think I'd say to you that YOU are the problem. How insane and stupid is that! Get a life oh and a BMW
Jag is the worst car ever. It’s mainly Tata parts from India.
BMW lacks on the interface department? Literally the only review ive ever heard saying that
I reviewed this car shortly after driving the new (at the time) Panamera, and Porsche did have a much more modern interface. These days I'd say Mercedes is where the money is in terms of infotainment. BMW managed to make its unobtrusive enough.
wow! technology
BMW has bad driver interface with infotainment hmmmm, can you shed some light on which one is better. May be that can be my next car. I am stuck with bmw because of driver interface with every thing on my current F10 is so good and easy to use.
The new Porsche Panamera is pretty good.
Marek Drives :) thats a pretty car, but cost double than my 530d in my country. Thanks for nice review but I still feel Bmw has best interface for drivers
Perfectly said they DO feel like go-karts
The comparision between the displaykey and getting to vehicle without shoes is completely stupid , in my opinion without offending you.
BMW forever
I got a 5series GT and I totally love it. But I can understand that they're going to change it to a 6series, as the 5series GT is really a 7series.
would love to see what the new M5 would look like
It is really stupid to say they don’t care about steering feel. If not, don’t buy Bmw, buy a Kia. A lot of tech, no driving dynamic
Touch controlled screens in cars are terrible, they distract you way to much and iDrive is the best infortainment system in its class
Lacks in the interface department? I stopped watching after that. How much did Audi pay you?
Actually Audi is not talking to me :-)
Dzień dobry z Kanady!
If you carry your sunglasses in their case, you shouldn't be driving a BMW.
BMW is not my ;) but Marek, You are the number one !
Good Presentation.
I wouldn't bother getting that bulky key (which you also need to charge), especially if a phone app can do the same functions. Actually, if you just use the phone to enter and start the car, would you still need to bring any key?
A question. Does it turn using remote, or just rolls forward and backward?
Only front and back with slight correction, but no turning. Mercedes-Benz is better in this respect, because it will park perpendicular back and front remotely.
+Marek Drives
he never asked about mercedes and ur comment simply proved u are biased and so was ur stupid review
+ahmed amjad someone's a BMW fanboy :)
Marek Drives did i say iam a bmw fanboy??? or did i give any sign of it??? chill bro i thought u were a merc fanboy
Judging by your comments all over the place, I get this impression. You're new here, so you know absolutely nothing about me. Watch a couple of my reviews (BMW, Merc, Audi), come back, then we'll talk.
Did this one have the integral active steering (rear-wheel steering)?
POINTLESS REVIEW IF IT CAN BE CALLED THAT....THIS IS AN EPIC CAR, TRY MORE NEXT TIME.
No man, it couldn't beat you! Taking off your shoes should not take that long. Or even taking off them was not a good idea, if it was, then you should have count putting them on too! :D
By the way your filming improved so much that I'm now watching your reviews more delightedly.
Thanks.
CJZ takie her shoes off, and is handed them later by one of the chauffeurs. And damn it, I have long laces! ;)
What a negative review. That car is superb. And that screen is a touch screen if you don't want to use the best in class iDrive system.
Its called "the ultimate driving machine", not "the ultimate touch control car".
My dream car
Please do a comprehensive review of the Lexus Gs 450 h presidential line or any other top line GS model.
I'll see what I can do.
5:05 the screen IS touchscreen....
Thanks!
I see, lots of thumbs down there. ;) You make one of the best overall cars in the world today, to look pretty poor. This with a bad interface department is my favorite. :) You make nice reviews there, don't know what happened here.
I think I wasn't sufficiently enthusiastic for BMW fanboys to like it ;)
Ok, maybe you are right, maybe not. Maybe because someone is sufficiently enthusiastic for BMW's competitors. ;)
Did you disable my answer to you? :)
Interesting comment, i will watch Mat Watsons revew
You didn't add the additional time it would take you to put your shoes on and get back in the car. Add another 15 seconds.
Awesome review
nice independent review, ...the BMW (like a Mercedes) is a really good car, if you have some ten thousand € left and you prefere a car, where you can add some cool packages for nicely extra prices, "lets get some Extras for ...lets say 15 tousand, yippee!" (means, if I were that rich, I would still feel stupid to pay all the fancy prices for the packages), ...super steering or not...
WHEN DO THE BLACK RIMS COME OUT IN USA
really good honest review, I will subscribe. and the new 5 series looks real good much better than audi a6 and Mercedes class e, butt on the interior hand down to the Mercedes its the best in the class modern and fells really special.
At first i thought you reved it cold but then i noticed temp gauge 5:50
I revved it, when I revved it. During filming the car is turned on and off numerous times to get various shots.
It's a press car, it'll be revved cold at some point, maybe not by Marek but another reviewer!
the sound system should be a more mild but quite one
i liked the color , can you tell me the name of this color cuz i never see it befor !! pllz answer me thanx
Probably Bluestone metallic.
Why gesture control is a problem? You can turn it off. And it's an option, you don't have to buy it.
Please!
Try new Porsche or Audi systems. They're pretty convincing.
Verry nice! 👍🏻
which package includes the display key?
Check the configurator on your local BMW website. I expect it requires everything I listed in the film, except the remote parking module.
What color is the car?
C2Y Bluestone metallic
I don’t even allow drinks in my car well maybe water
Does b58 engine have ?
Yes.
I hate it when people review cars and complain about a feature, that you can easily turn off - If you talk with your hands, turn off gesture control…Wasn’t hard, was it? 🤷♂️
It's an annoying feature, so I point it out.
@@MarekDrives Yeah, but you should have also pointed out how simple it is to disable it.
Look watsons review amd learn
COMPLICATED CUPHOLDERS???? you seriously have no problem to exaggerate to criticize german cars lol ( i am not german btw)
My Polish viewers claim I'm in zee German car manufacturers' pockets :)
This particular set of cupholders has a mechanism enabling users to make the opening smaller to hold let's say a 250 ml can, instead of a 330 ml can. YET :)
:D thanks for explaining, i imagine its one of those things that people who use it frequently, use it instinctively
but i seriously laughed when you were saying "complicated" and were just simply pushing it with the fingers XD
what colour is this ?
Pink
Debuted = Debued (pronunciation)
Must have slipped somewhere.
There's always one guy
Matter of interpretation, William. Marek's English is so good I think he he would like to know. I speak a few languages and get annoyed if people are `polite´and let me keep making the same mistake.
Very nice review really thanks
Just think that BMW is like apple phones people will buy it anyway!!
No new 5 series gets a manual gear box
They should make a manual one of this to maximize the driving pleasure.
I like it.
F30 lover what and how do you really feel about the bmw is it a turn on.
Obviously people with iPhones can park their cars themselves!
I always thought people with android phones were a bit inferior LOL
The BMW five series is not supposed to be a minivan
Really dont see the piint of touch screen. The i drive knob is perfect for a car. Gesture control also dnt see the point.
