But he said here that even that was too shallow. Remember that Kaido is not only a Zoan, or even just a carnivorous Zoan, but a Mythical Zoan. His regen is crazy. At this point Kaido was basically healing faster than he was being damaged. Luffy noticed that Kaido was infusing his blow with Conqueror's Haki and decided to do it too. The flashback about Hyogoro is to let us know that Luffy was now applying the principles of advanced armament Haki to his conqueror's Haki. That's why he can now actually hurt Kaido. Conqueror's stuff is strong.
He also noticed that Zoro unconsciously used it as well when he attacked Kaido with Ashura. Hence why Kaido pointed out that Zoro has CoC as well, but Zoro doesn't know yet.
Also, he belongs to a special race which already boosts his stats a lot too. MAJOR SPOILER: In the manga, him and Yamato are all but confirmed to be Ancient Giant hybrids. They apparently carry Ancient Giant bloods, which make them way more stronger and way more durable compared to an average person or a pure Giant from the very get go. So, he is Oni (Ancient Giant + Human hybrid supposedly), has Mythical Zoan which boosts his physical capabilities + Advanced CoA + CoC defenses.
I love the little timeout where Kaido basically gives Luffy time to think everything through Luffy: "You just hit me so hard it doesn't even make sense to me, so you know something I don't. Thought Ryuo would make up the difference from our first encounter, obviously not...Has to be Haki. Yes, Conqueror's Haki has always been all about radiating power at a distance. It would make sense for it to be key for deadling damage through defenses.

The actual first time we've seen one just like it was in the Oden's life flashback episodes when Oden first met Roger as Whitebeard and Roger clashed against each other with their no-contact weapon clashing resulted from imbuing their weapons in Conqueror's Haki!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The animation was top level and beautiful... but the auras were over the top. So glad Toei listened to the criticism from their fanbase because the aura was scaled way the hell back only a handful of episodes later

Zoro is the 1st who did Conquer Haki infusion accidentally then 2nd is Luffy after realization through getting hit by Kaido's club😂 Even Luffy knows that Ryou(Advance Armament) is not enough to take down Kaido's DURABILITY that's why Luffy remember the setback again and try to infuse his Conquer Haki to block Kaido's attacks and now able to hurt him solid.

smile victims have to laugh anytime they would express an emotion. But they don't have to express an emotion all the time. the ONLY thing they can do is laugh, but they don't HAVE to laugh. Just like normal people don't have to cry every time they're sad, or growl every time they're angry. if killer's calm he won't laugh. the ebisu town people constantly laughed because they were following yasuie's philosophy of accepting it. but the smile victims in the beast pirates aren't constantly laughing their heads off.

It’s exactly what roger and whitebeard did when the two clashed. He’s already been properly using ryuo (advanced armament haki) for this entire fight, but it wasn’t nearly enough to take on kaido on even grounds, which is why he has to awaken advanced conquerors to have a chance at winning
he was able to deal damage with just armament, but it was essentially just scratches. conqueror's ups your attack power by a crazy amount, so combining the two means he now has an AP high-explosive round, instead of just dealing scratch damage to kaido's skin and muscles.
You gotta understand, I love the animation, I mean it's incredible, this is one of my favorite episodes of One Piece, definitely like top 15. But, as a manga reader, you can see why we complain when all the crazy colors and flashing lights (that are not in the manga), confuse anime onlys. This is one of the biggest moments in Luffy's journey. Learning Advanced Conqueror's Haki coating was a tremendous moment, and how many many people who only watch the anime had to be told what was happening and missed out on that initial realization simply because the animators (as cool as it looks) felt like adding stuff that wasn't supposed to be there. Again, I LOVE THE ANIMATION, I TRULY DO, but it does have consequences.
