From a historical standpoint the Saxons and Vikings are basically the same. They were both known as raiders and even share common ancestry. I expected similarities between them.
Saxons and Norse are culturally different. Both groups actually hated eachother. If you read up on it, during the raids and colonization of Britannia, they found that the Norse did ethnic cleansing against the saxons as evident from mass graves. They might have shared a common ancestor and worshiped similar gods ie. Odin for Norse, Woden for Saxons... but both did become culturally different overtime. Its like trying to say the Normans are Norse because their ancestors came from Scandinavia, however Normans essentially became frenchified, by giving up their culture and religion for Frankish land.
thank you, it is great that CA allowed for some youtubers to try out the game before release, that way I can know better what exactly I am going to buy, that helps forseen some fiasco/ripoff like rome 2 or AC unity. This practice of letting some people to review a game with some experienced opinion on the game should be more frequent in this deceiving industry.
Roberto Yepes Yes, some people see it as unfair, but I think they should be happy. The big review sites can't be trusted anymore as they lack any knowledge about most games. For example, some review stated that the game was too difficult. Just, wow.
I don't know why'd you expect them to be so much different from the Saxons or the Franks, they are more or less the same people. They have the same culture, same religion, same ethnicity, same buildings, same military culture etc. so it is kind of good to see they are not too different from them, cause they're not supposed to. These are Viking Forefathers, not Vikings, and even later Vikings wouldn't be that different, the only buildings that would be unique would be the Staff-churches from the early Christians/Half-pagans in Sweden and Norway (not sure about Denmark). The differences in Culture from these and Saxons/Franks were in reality pretty minor.
NordiskHeidning I was hoping for at least a bit more diversity between the norse factions. Not even viking units, maybe just a couple of different germanic units. For example, the difference between other germanic factions is a lot bigger.
Yeah, the reason for that is quite obvious, the migrations of the Germanic factions causes that split between those who stayed and those who left. Some have already converted to Christianity. I can't even come up with any units other than those being there, changing the name and armour a bit isn't really giving them "more units". Also the ships aren't that strong compared to the bigger ships in the Mediterranean, the difference mostly lies in speed and boarding capability.
I do not care much for historical accuracy, this is a game based on history but that does not mean everything have to be by the book. I won't recreate history with this game, I will make history with this game. This is my opinion, if you want to play the game because you want to recreate historically accurate battles you are free to do so. I even wish they'd have created Total War Lord of the Rings style game. :P
Mostly of your opinions are agreeable. This dlc is so dissapointing but i am not so over hyped over about it.It is sad for my nordic friends who are looking forward to this unfinished dlc as if like CA is slapping their lazy work to their face.Thankfully , the modders will do something about it.
***** Cool that sounds good... The huscarls should be one of those units... Viking shields were pretty big,but light and flimsy and easy to break, but they were used to great effect in melee and could block some arrows.
I just realised you why I like your TW channel so much.... You play with the icons off ! So do I. It forces me to zoom in when I play the battles and I find when I watch most TW channels they play the game SOO far out that all I can see is some square icons charging a triangle icon... It annoys me so much. I would like to play a multiplayer campaign with someone who plays icons off but I live in Australia which is too far away for good connection. Dam.
Are you from India? :-) or is my accent hearing totally off this time ^^ But Honestly i was not excepting nothing major compared to Saxons. Same people after all. Saxons just moved more. Not including how Vikings moved, because these aren't Vikings, yet.
what should a guy like me living in a place with no access to the official total war games nor ability to buy the games online :( should I download a pirated version or die in agony ps: i LOVE the total war series !
***** But to be fair, the longboats, and even the norse as seafaring people didn't really begin until 700. I'd expect them to have strong infantry, maybe some strong ships just as a nod towards what they'll become, but they shouldn't be considered a sea-focused people, yet. Great review, though!
You are surprised Germans are like other Germans? If you are expecting Vikings you are like 300 years early, even a lot of the unique stuff they have is not very historical. The real laugh is that the Angles have been ignored in favour of Jutes just so they can have this historical misnomer "viking forefathers" tagline. Truth is you are not going to get loads of different units from the same culture. Most of the "barbarians" involved in the events are of the same culture, Germanic. CA are really pumping in lots of ahistorical units already to try and differentiate the factions, and you want more? If they really want all this stuff the should have set the game in the early middle ages when all the differentiation actually happened, rather than giving random stuff to factions just because their descendants had them hundreds of years later.
Well they would just be making more stuff up. The entire Northwest German people (which is most of them) would be fighting in the same way, and there is no sources for any little differences there might have been. There should only really be 2 different Germanic Cultures in this time period, east (Goths etc) and west (Franks, Saxons, "vikings" etc). The terminology is so bad. I mean the Saxons were not Nordic. So even if you want to make the split between West German and North German (aka Nordic) happen early why would you make Saxons Nordic? But then they make the split again by having "viking" units for the people that would go on to later become Nordic, so why not call them Nordic? Viking is an old Norse term, a language that won't exist for a couple of centuries, and whatever its predecessor was in describing a sea-raider describes Saxons more accurately. It was the Saxons, Angles, Jutes and Frisians who were the great seafarers of the time period going and conquering England, not the Danes. But of course it is all about money, Vikings sell so they just cram it in there. Really going by what happened in the games time period and the evidence there is for different "units" etc only the Jutes really deserves to be a playable faction (we hear nothing about Geats until 100 years later and all the Danes did was supposedly chase the Heruli out of Zealand 200 years earlier), and the Jutes were really similar to the Angles and the Saxons. When you consider the factions we will probably never get that would actually be interesting and did stuff at the time it is a real joke.
Why do you keep saying vikings? They are not viking at all.!? From an archaeological standpoint they were nearly the same as the other germanic tribes. no big difference. And hats why they have the same loadout as the saxons.
Marc Miltz Because the Dlc is called Viking Forefathers and the word vikings is much easier to say than forefathers. :p I know why they have the same, but some unique units would be cool, even unique germanic units.
Very nice video, Really informative and loved how you displayed the unit in game while talking about their unit card in lobby.
DarkAngel2796 Great to hear, thanks :)

This is what i was really afraid of. CA releasing factions with no drastically different rosters from the pre-existing barbarian factions.
Ah welll...
So sad, Vikings could have been my favorite faction.
Thanks for the reviews
Mohamad Doghman No problem, thanks for watching!
Well said :D and agree completely
RemusRomulas Thanks!
You didn't complain about how similar the gothic faction rosters are even though they only have about 2 different units
Thanks for this. Great detail.

You gave me great detail about htis DLC .. Thank You So much ..

Thanks for the video. I know I won't be preordering now, I can't believe I was tempted, I should have learned from Rome 2!

As much as I want to bury Jutish axes into the skulls of my enemies i don't think I'm going to pre order or even buy til a review comes out
FlashGrapes A review is already out. check out IGN and you will find it :)

***** you are welcome. I suscribed to your channel because I liked the videos anyway:) I love Rome 2 and this looks also great.
can we start to call them as they are named? maybe "the forefathers " to make it shorter if you really want.
Aren't the vikings shields kind of small? I mean i know they are the forefathers, but still...
Ace Hammerheart Depends on the unit, some other units that I didn't show have bigger shields.
***** Cool that sounds good... The huscarls should be one of those units... Viking shields were pretty big,but light and flimsy and easy to break, but they were used to great effect in melee and could block some arrows.
viking dlc without norway....
I have a question if you dont buy the DLC can you still fight againsts those units in campaign against the NPCs?
RalphyGreene Yes
Why do you play without shadows, ambient occlusion, etc.. the marines in the intro looked so weird without proper lightning :) It only cost 4-5fps ;)
johann sebastian bach Because recording with this game is challenging sometimes. I want to maintain good quality and FPS in my videos.
so. no longboats -.- But yeah it do says viking "forefathers" but I hope there will be a mod in the future adding this, good vid though! :)

yeah I totally agree with you, vikings should have own skill tree and unique units and ships
Alx Cross Thanks for watching!
To be fair, the Alans have more ships than the Vikings. Their naval units won't necessarily be superior to the Viking ships.
