3.0 Duramax Warranty BLOCKED - CATCH CAN FAILURE - Drain yours ASAP !!!

- This video is my opinion on a situation that could have been avoided if there was more information available about cold weather and catch cans. The intentions here are to help spread the word that freezing water inside a catch can can cause damage to your engine and may even result in a warranty block, as shown in the video. A fellow member of the 3.0 community had their warranty blocked, allegedly, due to the use of a catch can that failed to provide ample flow and created excessive pressure in the crankcase and then blew out the rear main seal. The catch can was said to have filled up with water and then froze which caused the issue to take place. I wanted to share the information to all of you guys and gals so the issue does not happen to you. If you are in cold climates and are using a catch can, please use it with caution as freezing can happen ! Drain it often, very often !!!
I have the VSE on my 21 Suburban and just drained it after seeing your video and I had 3/4 of a solo cup full of water/oil. Thank you for posting this.
Thanks for testing these, reporting on their performance, and then following up with issues. Their price, coupled with the minimal oil collection you observed, led me to the conclusion that I don’t need one. It turns out that was likely a good decision.
I shot a video on my channel back in September looking at some catch cans and their overall performance. What I found is their performance is simply dictated by the filtering media inside. Most of the time they are just some stainless steel wool shoved in the outlet line of the can. I also touched on the freezing potential with one of these. Aaaaand people have came at me with pitch forks saying "I have no idea what I"m talking about. If you are catching something, that is doing good."
By that logic a guy with a 5 gallon bucket could have bailed out the Titanic. What good is a $200+ can if it only catches 10%. Just because you catch SOMETHING doesn't mean you're doing anything of consequence.
Based on the designs that I looked at in my video, I'd be shocked if most of these catch can companies employed a single engineer. If one of your CC lines freeze before the bypass valve, the bypass valve is rendered useless...
Catch cans on stock vehicles are sold simply on fear mongering and nothing more.
I will check it out, I do not believe I saw it but look forward to checking it out. I pinned your comment because I feel it can be beneficial to many others that watch this and are unaware of catch cans.
For cold weather users, Run VSE and PPE/ProVent could add a solenoid activated valve that opens when the engine shuts off and closes when ignition comes on. This would allow draining CC contents into another higher capacity container while the CC contents are warm. The secondary container can be “open to atmosphere” to allow overflow to ground if owner forgets regular draining responsibilities without damaging engine. The CC itself can remain a “closed system” when engine is running to satisfy pressure sensors. Yes a marginal cost increase but some might find it worth it.
When I first saw this post I got chills . I recently installed my VSE catch can and haven't yet drained it. I relaxed while watching the video, as I live in Florida and don't have to worry about freezing conditions. I will leave mine installed. I don't want oil in my PPE charge air cooler. If I were to move north (Never Happening) I would drain it often. Maybe the viewer that had the issue should lawyer up and sue VSE for false advertising their product and get them to pay for his repair and legal counsel fees.
If you moved north you’d have to drain it daily 😂. Gets to -30 regularily over night would freeze every night
I bought the PPE catch can after it was first released and it worked as intended up until the beginning of January 2025. I had a check engine light pop on, I checked the banks idash and I had a P04FB code. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the crankcase ventilation pressure sensor. I had my truck back 24 hours and it threw the same code again, took it back to the dealer. The technician did some testing with the catch can and determined that it was not sealing properly causing unstable crankcase pressures. I removed the catch can and my truck has not popped a check engine light since. My fuel economy came back to its normal 29-30 mpg avg. as well.
I'm sorry to hear that, and I appreciate you sharing your experience.
I have the PPE as well. Put it on about a week ago. Just popped the P04FB. Guess I'm pulling it off 😕
Trying to out engineer the engineers can backfire.
I installed the ppe catch can last week of December. Two days ago i was just curious what it looked like. It was full of water!! It has been above freezing for about a week here.. man im glad i looked... only have put maybe 1500 miles since install. Thank you for putting this out there. I have since heard many horror stories about dealers voiding warrantys for these aftermarket parts. I haven't even got my first oil change!! 😮
I had mine on for a week and just popped the P04FB code. Drained the can and almost straight water. Luckily I'm in North Texas and it barely freezes here, and hasn't in weeks.
Ouch...Hope others catch this before the worst happens...Thanks again DW. Peace.
I bought one of these, waited a long time for production and delivery, I never put it on deciding to wait until some longer term results were in, now I have a brand new perfectly clean and mar free $400 paperweight. In the long run this product only caught my money, not any oil or water.
Sorry to hear :-(
I have the VSE catch can as well. I have a 2025 GMC 1500 3.0 and put my can on at 1,000 miles. I am at 2,800 now and just emptied mine for the first time and it filled up as much as yours did with mostly water and a little oil. Thanks for publishing this. I live in Bennington, Nebraska, where they make these and our winter so far hasnt been all that cold luckily. This is very helpful to know that in winter, these filled up extremely fast with water, which is a huge watch point if you have one. Why is the CC catching more water in winter than warmer months? Maybe just take it off over winter, like you said.
I won't run any in the winter time.
This was always my concern from day one, with north eastern utahs cold climate and unpredictable winter temps I opted not to do this. I have seen temps as low as -38 degrees. Plus the fact mine lives in an uninsulated barn. Although I am not a fan of the motor burning sludge. I may consider this for summer fall and spring after warranty. Thanks again Greg for another informative solid video!
I appreciate the kind words and if you were one that expressed your concern in the other videos, i greatly appreciate that! Sometimes the naysayers are correct and this time it appears to be the case - my opinion :-)
@ possibly I can’t remember, I usually try to keep it positive I have been following your channel for a couple years, that’s just part of the process of testing what works and what doesn’t. No need to worry, part of the trial end error program at least you are 100 percent honest. I appreciate the time and money you spend testing products I have actually bought a couple products you have recommend, the scan tool, idash, and steps, more to come Ppe transcooler and oil pan are on the wish list also airbags or something like sumosprings will be future mods. Once again thanks for doing the grunt work and taking the time to share it, you help more people make educated decisions about there trucks! You have the best 3.0 duramax online content available I look forward to future videos!
I warned people about this on the facebook groups. CC's are dangerous in cold states. I had a 2014 5.3 and I was worried about valve deposits, so I installed a catch can. It never reliably got hot enough to burn off moisture and would ice up so bad that it would block off the PCV line. I had to drain it every 4 to 5 days or it would fill up with water and freeze shut. One time it actually pressurized the crankcase enough to pop the dipstick up. I was very lucky it didn't blow out the RMS. Other guys actually had it happen. I live in Wisconsin for reference.
I appreciate your honest review and info of your use of a catch can.
I live in So TX. Drained mine after you posted the video last week that I think you took down. Only got about 3 oz of nothing but oil - 0 water (after about 7k miles). Most likely due to us never getting freezing temps. I'll empty every oil change, but I don't think I'll have that issue. Hade mine on the truck now for about 16k miles
It’s funny I was so close to ordering one, and I thought maybe should wait and see some in field testing.
Sorry to hear about anyone who purchase in cold climate. Here from Canada.
As far as I understand the federal law on the warranty issues… they can void your warranty (for bolt on parts without tuning of course) if the part you installed caused the damage and they have significant proof of it. Other than that, they cannot void the warranty just because you installed an aftermarket part. I had an issue with a K&N intake on my 23 3.0 duramax throwing codes for air/fuel mix issues. Took it to the dealership and they said it’s mainly the K&N bringing in too much air. They didn’t charge me for looking into it. I switched to S&B intake and haven’t had issues since. K&N box was too big and brought in way too much air casing the issues. I was thinking of getting a catch can as my next buy shortly and I live in PA but glad I seen this first. That’s scary. I’ve had a catch can on my fully built 14 Chevy Cruze and never have I had an issue with the can feeezing but to possibly cause damage to the diesel is a shit load of money. Definitely will not install!! F that!
Ya sucks for sure, waited 3 1/2 months spent a boat load off money on it for a seasonal part, I'm just glad the guy posted his problem or I would off been in the same boat mine was clogged but have no seal leaks at the moment but removed can immediately
I feel the same. I feel lucky as I was right there about to have the same issue, potentially.
I bought into the catchcan gimmick with my 2011 Gen 1 Direct injection Ecoboost.. did it work, sure did, but any condensation in the lines or mixture in the can would freeze and stop all cc venting, and leave me stranded until I could get it thawed out. It’s not worth it to me. When I get a 3.0, i won’t be running one just because of where I live. Especially if it can cause a RMS to blow..
Have to double check my same PPE catch can. I have also drained a lot of water from mine also.
Seems best to just make a habit of draining it after you drive in cold climates. A chore but that's what a catch can is.... Fun times!
I have a VSE catch can I just installed in December 2024. 700 miles and 5 weeks latter I drained 3 OZ. of the same looking water from CC. I have the new CC with the built-in psi device (in can, not on hose). After removing I noticed drops of water coming from hose going to turbo, NOT GOOD! Also, noticed a burning smell after installation. FYI, I live in Oregon on coast, temps were in 40's no freezing.
Sorry to hear :( Thanks for sharing, so others can see as well, maybe they have the same.
I bought one but have never installed it. I wonder if vse will take it back?
Have you had any issues with the fuel filter system from vse?
It says they tested it while full. When it’s full it will take much longer to freeze, but when partially full it will freeze faster and that wasn’t tested? Probably an oversight?
Mine works great! I live in California so its mostly dry. This catch can has multiple bypasses I can’t see how it would fail? They still say it won’t void your warranty. The LM2 and LZ0 are known for bad rear seal anyway.
LM2’s had the bad rear seal issue, not on the lz0. Lz0 rear leak is usually the plate.
Youd rather that go through your turbo? Go for it. These newer vehicles dont last anyway with afm and exhaust regen etc. Catch can is the least of your problems. 😮
Yeah I'll trust the engineers with a degree over what I think would be a good idea. Plus, I like my warranty.
Wow thats wild, best of luck to the customer with the voided warranty.
I went with the other main brand for the catch can on these trucks (not sure if were keeping all brands out) and i live in the south. Im gathering that as long as i stay on my drainig schedule, and especially if is going to freeze, we should be fine?
The cans should be fine in winter use as long as it is frequently drained. That's the info I was trying to share because I felt that info just wasn't out there for everyone.
@treypeck8370 I have the plastic catch can like you. I live in central Arkansas and I was having to drain my catch can at least once a week, maybe twice a week due to the condensation. Be vigilant about draining it to avoid issues.
@@DemonWorkswelp, look at this. One week later, I get a P04FB. It's not been freezing in weeks. Drain the catch can and straight water. Cleared the code but it came back in two cycles. Do I just need to go and get the oil nice and hot, burn off that condensation?
Designing and testing of new engines costs many many millions of dollars. If the engine designers through the R&D process found that a catch can was a requirement then they would have implemented it into the design. Maybe the aftermarket company should have thought about a catch can heater. However, these companies typically test their products on one vehicle and no way no how have the R&D budget of the vehicle manufacturers. That is why I keep my truck completely stock except for. BANKS IDASH.
Maybe so, but in a warm climate this idea in theory is much better than gunking up the engine and making it burn its own oil is better than meeting an epa standard. Props to demonworks for testing and sharing great information!
Exactly dude. Too many other you tubers are getting free stuff, and then pushing it as an infomercial to further their own bank accounts without regard to the possible harm. Yup if the engineers at GM thought it was a good idea, I’m betting there would be one on every truck, or at least an option for $$ to add one.
While I did get this for free, I showed this catch can from beginning to end. I showed the how to install as well as what it should do. I then showed multiple times that it didn't catch any oil beyond a tiny sampling, 3 times. I gave my honest opinion, the good and the bad and I am glad you guys saw my honest opinions throughout this.
My only objection to what you said is that a catch can requires a vigilant maintenance observance. Seeing as most people can't be bothered to maintain their vehicles properly in the first place, a factory catch can would be very likely to be a problem spot for a lot of owners. That's a headache an OEM doesn't want to deal with.
@ Well if the maintenance was Manual you’re 100% correct. But if a catch can was an absolute requirement the engineers could easily design an electronic solenoid valve that would open and drain the catch can after so many miles or hours or temperature cycles.
Put it back to “stock” before getting warranty work next time?
Can you provide any more of an update on the bypass for the newly designed CC from vse? When it might come out and if folks with the newer hose design CC need it?
I cannot, my communications went ignored with them a while ago.
Given the PPE is plastic will it condense less then VSE? Just ordered the VSE catch but will cancel.
In theory, yes. I also believe the PPE can hold more. No matter what you get, just drain it way more often than is suggested.
Damn water freeze......crazy
On top of all the concerns I hear going out. My concern is people watching UA-camrs that puts these on their trucks vehicles and then this happens to the people that follow the crowd and they get stuck with a nice huge bill cuz something went wrong
UA-cam people sharing their info is a great thing, the good and the bad!
What if you just leave the drain valve open?
You will get a code for that.
Just put a extension hose on it going out the bottom to the ground and leave it open
Then you have a check engine light and dumping oil on the underside of the vehicle.
Just goes to show ya, you really have to be careful of what people push in you tube. Dude I know you meant well, but there might be ramifications such as this. I had made such a concern in one of your other vids about just this, the warranty issue. While you know what’s up and what you are doing, there are way too many people out there pushing products (sometimes with sponsorship ) with no real long term testing or authority from the mfg. this is almost getting as bad as people listing listening to one side of the political talking heads and taking them verbatim. Always do research and give it time for just such a good video as this one pointing out the possible pitfalls.
I do what i can to share all forms of information, the good and the bad while also testing products. this is just one of those where a product was tested and I shared my personal thoughts from beginning to end.
Yep, another instance of using the customers’ vehicle for R&D instead of actual in house R&D. There’s too many unethical aftermarket companies like this.
Increase the drainage intervals
That’s what was said in the video. Every couple hundred miles.
@ I saw it as I kept watching…. Engineers don’t catch everything
What about the PPE provent 200 plastic version?
I don't have anything negative to say on that one as I have not personally seen any posts or personal issues with it. I would liek to add that no matter the catch can you have, stay on top of draining it!
I would like to hear any negatives/long term reviews to running the PPE catch can in cold climates.
Was thinking of installing one on my pickup.
@@blairpetrowski1455I put a ppe on mine 2 weeks ago. Got a code Friday P04FB. Drained it and a basically straight water came out. Cleared code, drove and it came back on. I live in North Texas, its been well above freezing for those 2 weeks. Thinking it needs to come off.
Elephant hose mod……….Jeeps with OM642 3.0L do it all the time
Does anyone foresee any warranty issues from just running a Banks idash plugged into the OBD2 ?
It would need to cause an issue that you are trying to get warranty coverage on.
the best thing for ur engine is deleting all that stuff
Never fails… eventually some mods will come back to haunt you.
waste of money just change your oil every 5k miles and drive/enjoy your pickup
Everyone’s first clue should have been when they wanted $500 for a $30 catch can. Technology that’s been around for 100 years, acting like they invented the wheel
😬
Had that same catch can with nothing but trouble. Codes after codes. Don’t know why you don’t take that blue tape off of there. You promoted that product at one time. Grow a pair. Man up do the right thing.
I think I "manned up" by sharing the info and providing my opinion on drain intervals. I did show the installation, I showed my drains , 3 times, even when they were trickling out. Plenty of "manned up" ....
CC’s are snake oil, just like a $500 “cold air intake”.
Absolutely no reason to use those..waste of money
And for one person, many thousands of reasons not to!
One of the least educated statements on here so far, but luckily opinions aren’t graded on here 😜. There are reasons for these, you just don’t place as high of value on them as others. And that’s ok.
@derichhofmann4667 yeah, they're needed so much that the manufacturers are installing them. We all know that you are much smarter than the thousands of engineers designing vehicles.
@@ericdiekmann2308 perhaps you think the board of directors for these companies give a crap about your engine’s performance or your cost of maintenance/repair beyond the warranty period. Perhaps you are either too trusting or don’t give a crap either 🤷🏼♂️
@derichhofmann4667 always a tarded conspiracy theorist
🤣😂🤣
