I have been watching Eva zu Beck's travels on her youtube channel for several years. Nice to see her on BBC sharing another favorite part of the world and highlighting some of the mushers that I have enjoyed watching on the Yukon Quest race over the years.
I have lived in the Yukon. I have never met more friendly people. But the winters are cold enough in Edmonton. I leave the territory to the younger generation.
I completed this race about 18 years ago. It was difficult running on the river, because my dog team and I didn’t have river experience. But they did amazing and it was a grand experience and adventure!!
My family went up to the Yukon from California in the 1800s, I still have family in Whitehorse and Carcross but my grampa's dad was offered land and citizenship in Dawson Creek, B.C. near the Alberta border where they had a lumber mill and small farm raising pigs. My Gramps was the 13th of 13 kids, born in 1928, they lived pretty much like the Waltons if the Waltons had double the kids, even went to school riding a mule like the younger Waltons kids. I went to the Yukon once on a work trip and dropped by my distant relative's place in Whitehorse, they had two huskys, didn't race them, just housepets.

Being a dog lover myself, I have learned the truth about running a dog over snow for miles and miles, as well as the horrible conditions most of the sled dogs are forced to live in. Sled dogs are treated cruelly and kept on short chains in harsh weather when they're not racing. Just like in the Alaskan Iditarod. Dogs like to run in snow, but not a forced 450 mile race. Many die of heart attack or collapsed lungs, or pneumonia from being run into the ground. This is animal abuse and carried out by people with no empathy for other beings. Should be ended for good. BBC has no ethics. Why doesn't BBC do a behind the scenes investigation on how the dogs are treated when they're not racing and out of the spotlight? Sad.

It absolutely is cruelty. Humans have this idea that animals naturally want to bust their asses for us, and that dominance is absolutely ok as long as they "take good care of" the dogs or the dolphins of whatever animal they're exploiting. If they'd do some reading, they'd learn something. But they won't. Humans need to evolve past this crap. Animals are not here for us to use.

If you get rogue owners who don’t treat their dogs right, that has nothing to do with the vast majority of dog owners who enter this race with absolute love for their canines.

Running dogs to death for entertainment is disgusting. Boycott the sponsors of this unnecessary cruelity.
