When my husband went through drill for the army, maybe 9 years ago, he told me stories. They don't do bayonet training, the pit no longer exists, they had "stress cards" (you pull one out and no one can raise their voice at you or make you do any pt). Our retired drill sergeant friend got pissed, he was in charge of the pit.
Ok, I was not expecting the "Marines eat crayons" thing even though I should've. My father's a Marine veteran and just recently went to a get-together with other Marines. He came home with 3 things of bubblegum shaped like crayons! I have yet to bite into mine, but it's yellow, so I hope it's good.

That’s fort Leonard wood and those barraks behind him were the same barraks my TAC for MP school in the marines 08-22. Graduated August 2022. Was a glorious thing being a marine on that base
The thing is, after spending 15 years in the ARMY, I understood something. They do those stupid things like Sweeping the line, and other things, to make you WANT to kill. After you get to the point where you just want to kill something, they then let you lose on the enemy. It is like letting lose the hungry and angry dogs on a bunch of meat. You will gnaw on someone's liver in an anger that you would never have otherwise. And it scares the hell out of the enemy to see the rage in the eyes of the grunts that are coming over the hill to kill you. Of course, the only way to make a grunt more angry, is to mess with doc. You mess with doc, and it is like you have snapped the final bit of humanity in a grunt.

One of the people from church I know used to be in the army and what she would do when they were walking or marching they would sing, so in church camp she would have us sing too when we were walking, it was fun
I never went military, but I can remember seeing that scenario with the pepper spray training from BCOT. Worse part was it took longer to hit me then the people who went before me. So I had 5 seconds of thinking it wasn't going to affect me. Soon after, 3 loud swears and a concerned instructor holding the punching bag.
