I cried in the theaters for Brave during this song and the ending. The soundtrack to this movie as well as the animation is so underrated. It all goes perfectly with the Scottish feel of it. The ending of the movie is so relatable to me, which is funny because Merida is usually considered one of the least relatable princesses but I relate to her the most. The ending of this movie where they played back this song... does anybody else love Merida as much as I do? Because I really, *really* love her!

Then, my mom invited me to go see this movie, and when this song started during the flashback, I started thinking about my childhood and the good memories with my mom, and I almost cried. I remembered when I was little I would always watch my mom typing and was obsessed in how fast she could type, and when she went off the computer, I would go on and practice typing fast without looking--now I'm a pro at it =D. I remember when I would cry, I could always count on her to come up and just hug me tightly, and tell me that everything is going to be okay. I'm Scottish. During the highland clearances (1700s) the English drove the people from their land, they outlawed Gaelic and tartan and it was punishable by lengthy imprisonment. The English all but decimated the highland way of life. It was during the clearances that many Scots moved to Canada and America. Interest in our heritage, particularly in our mother tongue, is on the rise and more children are being taught Gaelic in school. I'm trying to learn it too. It's a beautiful language.
It makes me sad when people hate how people want to get in touch with their ancestors culture. Anyway, I hope you've made progress and continue to do so and have a delightful time. 🏴
When I hear this kind of music, my heart and soul swells with pride. I am thankful I'm a descendant of both Irish and Scottish heritage. I will forever be proud of the blood that flows through my veins.
I just saw this movie today for the very first time and I think this movie is by far my favorite from Disney. Its beautiful and instead of the typical love affair its about the love between mother and daughter, their differences and them over coming their differences and accepting each other.
Not really Disney. Pixar made it, it's just released under a Disney-Pixar label so Disney could rake in the cash hand over fist upon it's release... But wonderful film, beautiful soundtrack, and a noble moral in it's story
Whenever I hear this, I can go back to when I was a child. I would rarely see my cousins and my father's homeland. So when I did, I made sure to love every minute I could. I remember playing the recorder out in the courtyard, watching movies that were a bit too adult for me with cousin Gary, playing with their dog Harvey, and making sugar popcorn with Paula, Kelly, and Hannah. I also never knew how they got the scottish shortbread cookies in the room so early! I remember so many smiles, and so much respect amongst the family. I always cry from happiness. This song is so much more than a melody for me: it's a memorial of my childhood :')
Ah, but to wake to a dew strewn field and have a mug of something rascally and sweet. I enjoy the sound of green woods, golden apples and sweet honey; its enough to content a man of simple living, which is all a man really need.
Come dawn light rose the young woman. Her intentions pure, the curious soul, seeking adventure. She rose to the sun and stood in mornings first light, heart at peace with nature and herself alone. Flowers withered in comparison for the light in the eyes of this soul was truly of a different kind.
Oh yes, I also loved that. And she did it sooo beautifully - I mean, we must acknowledge that she is absolutely British after all, despite her mother coming from Scotland. I guess there's just literally nothing Emma Thompson can't do
My husband brought this home for me to watch, without knowing it, the evening I would go into labor with our first daughter. Oh what a memory. A movie that turned out to be so poignantly about the love and struggles between mom and daughter. So precious to me now. So much a part of the story of our family. We rewatch the film and remember it's lessons every year on her birthday. And I try not to turn into a bear as often and let her live life her way. And she tries to accept me, even if I do (turn into a bear sometimes).
That's amazing, just so beautiful :) What a sweet memory for your family. And yes, we all "turn into bears" sometimes- but there's a reason that the oldest continuous symbol in human culture is of "Mother Bear"- from cultures across the world and since the beginning of time... Long have we admired that strong and fierce protectress.
I am not Scottish, even not European. But after this song I want to learn this beautiful rare language. 😻 Is it little motivation for learning new language?
i remember being obsessed with this movie as a little kid, the music always made me feel sleepy and safe. wish my parents had sang me to sleep when i was little, but at least i had this movie as comfort
My dad is Irish, so being a part of a culture with such beautiful music is awesome. I’m going to listen to this song a lot so I can learn how to sing it. 😊✨
i just dont understand how frozen was better than this movie when frozen was a shitty movie but this movie had meaning to it and one of disney's best movie ever made
mrprojoe1 I hated frozen ! and all the hype about it, when this movie had so much more depth and emotion, makes me wonder where the human race is going lol.
Over 50% of my ancestry is Celtic, 33% of that being Scottish. This song definitely makes me want to learn Gaelic so I can honor my ancestors. The way it’s sung just makes me nostalgic for a place that I’ve never been to.
I get all emotional because it reminds me of how my Mom's always there for me and my Dad too. When I was 4, people began to laugh at me, saying I'm chubby. I once cried and my Mom came. She told me "Ignore what others call you, because it's their mouth, not yours." Now, I proved them wrong. And when I was a kid, my Dad would always laugh at my horrible jokes. Now, I'm the one who's laughing at his horrible jokes
This song makes me cry for the fact that me and my mom always fight somehow and sometimes I'd just hope we could talker better or at least agree to disagree.. This song is something I'm definitely sharing when I have kids. To remind them to never be afraid of being who they are with me and that I'll never shut them out
I was born and raised in Scotland, but moved to London when I was 10. Most of the family I have up there have passed away now, so there's little reason for me to return, but one day I will go and raise a family there. It's such a beautiful country for it's tiny size. My boyfriend is Irish and we go there regularly, but if I'm honest, Ireland is nowhere near as wild and stunning. I wont tell him that, though!
Wonderful movie! They need to do a movie like this set in Ireland. That would be fun to see. Sadly most people are more into the more avante garde countries such as France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, Sweden, Switzerland, Egypt, India, Africa, etc. Very few people are into Celtic stuff. I have heard it from many that Ireland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. I have ancestral lineage there and Britain if someone gave me my choice of what country I was to go to it would be Ireland first then England hands down over those other countries. But that's just me. Everyone is different.
I said that same thing! I said to my friend. In crossover land- "Is it possible that Stoick was one of the suitors that competed for Elinor back in the day and that's why they both know the same tune of a song but with different words."
This song is always touching 💕 My family is very close to our Irish and Scottish roots. It's amazing to see so many people amazed/inspired by the heritage! It's rare to hear Gaelic now a days but I'm learning it at the moment and it's a beautiful language.
This is my Favorite disney movie simply because it doesn't show the value of romantic love but rather the value of Family and because i always had issues with my own mother and how we see things differently, this film really hits close to home for me.
I don't know much about music and I don't speak Gaelic, but props to the composer/lyricist/translators. It takes great skill to write a modern piece which sounds like something traditional that's been around for centuries. Bravo.
Tbh I love this movie so much I would've never known this movie until my mom bought this movie for some reason and she hasn't even seen it and I related to Merida a lot I used to hate my mom so much I wish I could just change her or have a better mom but after watching this movie I've realized how much my mom has done for me and etc. Even til now I still really love the movie and I cri every time.
Probably the most beautiful song in the movie. When I listen to this I see Elinor sitting beside Merida's bed when she was a child singing together. So sweet.
I like meridas and her moms relationship so much and i think its the best portrayed relationship b disney and pixar. reason is , its not super romantized and cuddly. disney focused a lot on parents and child-relationships in many movies, mostly on fathers and sons or daugthers but it always ends up having the perfect flawless loving relationship. meridas mother however and merida show a realistic relationship, both are strong willed and strong headed and stubborn and they lose the way of communication with each other which they gather in the end again. but yet still in the end they become again like "friends" but it wont turn into loveydovey parents-kids relationship (hard to explain) even out in the wild they are not super cuddly always snuggling onto each other or having other types of fun mother-daugther activities. there is alwas some kind of "distance" between them. first of all also portrays the way royals lived with having kind of etiquette, but at the same time its an healthy distance because at some age you let go of your child a bit and keeping this distance. because i am used to the standard disney movies i found it odd sometiimes thinking "wow her mum is now a cuddly bear, why she wont hug or pet her and such things but totally never touch her at all ?" but after watching it a second time i think all other options wouldnt even be fitting to sum it up: think a huge difference of this movie towards all other movies is that both, merida and her mother treat each other like adults with respect. even the tiny brothers were super indipendent and not always just cuddling and cared about . its like each individual here kept their respect and distance to build up a real close familiar relationship mentally without having to have these touchy-parts
I wish there was more Gaelic singing in the movie XD. Its so beautiful, my father, sis and I are Scottish, we have the red hair, and hearing this feels like I'm at my ancestors home land. I luv Brave, I wish that it was popular like Frozen! XD
I was fond of this song way before coming to Scotland. It made me want to come to Scotland so much... I almost forgot this song, and then UA-cam reminded me this song. It's so peaceful to see your dreams come true.
Music like this pulls at the heart. It makes me long for a land of the past. To King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, or ancient Ireland. I really think more people should have heard this song, it makes you wonder about your past and a land where man and nature were one.
I love this movie so much, the way it shows the mother & daughter love is really beautiful. I also think it's the first disney where the mother saves the girl.
Julie fowlis, a gaelic singer, was a big part of this movie’s music i believe. She is a fantastic starting place for gaelic music. A very touching song is A Phuithrag ‘s a Phiuthar. Whole album is good, my favorites being Oran a Roin and Dh’èririch Mi Moch Madainn Cheòthar (some of her most popular).
It’s weird but despite this being a song between Mother and Daughter it’s always been me and my Dads song, every time it plays we both get really emotional and I really do see him in Merida’s dad “minus the ginger and Scottish and a little bit more stern” This song will always be beautiful.

I'm American but my heritage is all English and Scottish and I'm a ginger so I definitely feel the ancestral love. Scotland is one of my favorite places on earth so far, I've been twice and would love to live there.
Don't worry if most people don't liked Brave that much, most people have horrible taste in everything anyways.
A naoidhean bhig, duinn mo ghuth

Ar righinn oig, fas as faic

English lyrics:
Little baby, hear my voice
I'm beside you, O maiden fair
Our young Lady, grow and see
Your land, your own faithful land
Sun and moon, guide us
To the hour of our glory and honour
Little baby, our young Lady
Noble maiden fair

+PhantomQueenOne What language is it?
lynn blevig Scottish. I had to look it up, I don't understand it.
Haha. Okay then. xD
+lynn blevig It's Gaelic
+HookedCharming ok thank you! :)
Honestly, is there anything Emma Thompson can't do?!
Thank you! Finally someone saying it! I was wondering why on earth no one is talking about how beautifully Emma has done this...
THIS WAS EMMA THOMPSON??!!

Likewise on all counts!
And I am proud of being human!
Dragon Face I am proud of my Irish heritage and may yours and mine and the whole world pride live long
I also have the same feelings, but I am not of from Ireland, I am just pleased with the human beings and their diversity
Dragon Face the celtics will rise again !!!
LeDonna Sotomayor-Baalmann you realize disney owns pixar right? just saying. but you do have a good opinion pointer
I'm in no way Scottish(Mexican American) but this part made me miss my mom so much. lol
Why do I find this sad?
Because moms are great, this type of music is beautiful, and we love the sweetness of this movie.
It's not sadness, cuz it touches yer heart
because mother and daughter are lying in the wake of their misunderstanding with each other. Their family was nearly torn apart.
This song is so much more than a melody for me: it's a memorial of my childhood :')
that´s so sweet!
FearPhobicGamer awwww dude im glad you like the song and it brings you lovely memorys =)
I melted inside when little merida started singing too!It was so cute and this is such a beautifull language!
ONE DAY I WILL SING THIS TO MY CHILD.
Ah, but to wake to a dew strewn field and have a mug of something rascally and sweet. I enjoy the sound of green woods, golden apples and sweet honey; its enough to content a man of simple living, which is all a man really need.
121UniversalCritic
And a good mug of cider and a few friends
That’s beautiful. ❤️
with your wife coming up behind you with the kids still asleep
Maggy Foster eh, sometimes solitude is the best company someone needs.
Come dawn light rose the young woman. Her intentions pure, the curious soul, seeking adventure. She rose to the sun and stood in mornings first light, heart at peace with nature and herself alone. Flowers withered in comparison for the light in the eyes of this soul was truly of a different kind.
I think I've found my funeral song.
I'm not Scottish and I don't speak the language, but this is still beautiful.
I love that Emma Thompson sang this.
So so, beautiful. :)
Mindy Saini I thought Julie Fowlis sang it?
No, Emma sang this tune. Julie only did two songs, Touch the Sky and Into the Open Air.
Oh yes, I also loved that. And she did it sooo beautifully - I mean, we must acknowledge that she is absolutely British after all, despite her mother coming from Scotland. I guess there's just literally nothing Emma Thompson can't do
British- England, Scotland and Wales
Beautiful language, the little girl's voice is very cute and amazing.
Oscar award for most underrated movie .... I am not crying 😢😥😭
I am not Scottish, even not European. But after this song I want to learn this beautiful rare language. 😻
Is it little motivation for learning new language?
i remember being obsessed with this movie as a little kid, the music always made me feel sleepy and safe. wish my parents had sang me to sleep when i was little, but at least i had this movie as comfort
As a Breton girl, I say yes! Beautiful celtic song, so proud to be a celtic! :)
I love Scotland,Land of the poets ,land of the brave
I always thought I couldn't be even more in love with Emma Thompson, her acting and her voice - and then she did the Scottish accent and sang THIS
Trying to sing along to these lyrics is hard. XD
Love this song.
Never give up, go celtics!
My dad is Irish, so being a part of a culture with such beautiful music is awesome. I’m going to listen to this song a lot so I can learn how to sing it. 😊✨
Its Scotland though
I know, the 2 cultures are similar though
this is the most criminally underrated disney soundtrack EVER
I think me and my mother are going to learn this song and do a cover.
This movie describes our relationship so well.
i just dont understand how frozen was better than this movie when frozen was a shitty movie but this movie had meaning to it and one of disney's best movie ever made
mrprojoe1 I hated frozen ! and all the hype about it, when this movie had so much more depth and emotion, makes me wonder where the human race is going lol.
OMG this song is so fucking emotional! The best song of Disney movies in my opinion
Over 50% of my ancestry is Celtic, 33% of that being Scottish. This song definitely makes me want to learn Gaelic so I can honor my ancestors. The way it’s sung just makes me nostalgic for a place that I’ve never been to.
I won't deny that this isn't one of my favourite Disney Pixar movies of all time, but I will say that the soundtrack is amazing.
This made me well up in the film, I'm not going to lie. It's simply beautiful.
YES, THE LOOP BUTTON IS FINALLY BACK
HELLO, ENDLESS BRAVE SOUNDTRACKS
This song makes me cry every time and I can’t even explain why; there’s just something about it that’s so profound.
Im Scottish but dont speak Gaelic.
I got the books to learn it but gave up.
It is extremely difficult to learn on your own.
chunky monkeyjohn I think every language is hard to learn on your own :P I mean.. where to start right? xD
You can learn on duolingo ; )
This song makes me cry for the fact that me and my mom always fight somehow and sometimes I'd just hope we could talker better or at least agree to disagree.. This song is something I'm definitely sharing when I have kids. To remind them to never be afraid of being who they are with me and that I'll never shut them out
This is my motivation for learning Gaelic :)
Emma Thompson singing this. I'm blown away. Throughout the whole movie it doesn't even sound like her. I guess that's voice talent!
Most underrated disney movie ever:(
I’m gonna go hug my mom
Who else thought the beginning sounded like "For The Dancing and For The Dreaming" from How To Train A Dragon 2
Me
I said that same thing! I said to my friend. In crossover land- "Is it possible that Stoick was one of the suitors that competed for Elinor back in the day and that's why they both know the same tune of a song but with different words."
I can't sing this song without crying
I wish this was longer😞
The extended version is 3 minutes
This song is always touching 💕 My family is very close to our Irish and Scottish roots. It's amazing to see so many people amazed/inspired by the heritage! It's rare to hear Gaelic now a days but I'm learning it at the moment and it's a beautiful language.
This musical piece touches anyone's heart. I wish I lived among the times of celts, listening to these kind of songs all day long
WILL B DEDICATING THIS SONG 2 MY DAUGHTER ON DEC.21ST 2019 AT HER SWEET 16..AND ALMOST THE WHOLE SOUNDTRACK💕🍀
as a girl growing up with a scottish background i appreciated this movie so much
Makes me cry everytime. Merida will forever be my favourite disney princess.
YOUR PROFILE PIC AND NAME ARE AWESOME
This is my Favorite disney movie simply because it doesn't show the value of romantic love but rather the value of Family and because i always had issues with my own mother and how we see things differently, this film really hits close to home for me.
If u like family values check out brother bear by disney
I don't know much about music and I don't speak Gaelic, but props to the composer/lyricist/translators. It takes great skill to write a modern piece which sounds like something traditional that's been around for centuries. Bravo.
If someone started singing this to me I would cry
Tbh I love this movie so much I would've never known this movie until my mom bought this movie for some reason and she hasn't even seen it and I related to Merida a lot I used to hate my mom so much I wish I could just change her or have a better mom but after watching this movie I've realized how much my mom has done for me and etc. Even til now I still really love the movie and I cri every time.
Well, I teared up when this song played on the movie.
I do really wanna sing this song so badly. Unfortunately, I don't know that language :(
#MalikRyan
I am pretty sure it is celtic.
I wanna sing along too.....but my voice is standing on the way
chrisa papa It's Scottish Gaelic :)
Thanks so much guys for telling ;)
Chrisa it is celtic. One of the celtic languajes, at least. It's scottish gaelic
Giovanna Diaz Thanks for being more specific ^^
Probably the most beautiful song in the movie.
When I listen to this I see Elinor sitting beside Merida's bed when she was a child singing together. So sweet.
Scottish music is one of the best kind of music in my opinion :)
I like meridas and her moms relationship so much and i think its the best portrayed relationship b disney and pixar. reason is , its not super romantized and cuddly. disney focused a lot on parents and child-relationships in many movies, mostly on fathers and sons or daugthers but it always ends up having the perfect flawless loving relationship.
meridas mother however and merida show a realistic relationship, both are strong willed and strong headed and stubborn and they lose the way of communication with each other which they gather in the end again. but yet still in the end they become again like "friends" but it wont turn into loveydovey parents-kids relationship (hard to explain)
even out in the wild they are not super cuddly always snuggling onto each other or having other types of fun mother-daugther activities. there is alwas some kind of "distance" between them. first of all also portrays the way royals lived with having kind of etiquette, but at the same time its an healthy distance because at some age you let go of your child a bit and keeping this distance.
because i am used to the standard disney movies i found it odd sometiimes thinking "wow her mum is now a cuddly bear, why she wont hug or pet her and such things but totally never touch her at all ?" but after watching it a second time i think all other options wouldnt even be fitting
to sum it up: think a huge difference of this movie towards all other movies is that both, merida and her mother treat each other like adults with respect. even the tiny brothers were super indipendent and not always just cuddling and cared about . its like each individual here kept their respect and distance to build up a real close familiar relationship mentally without having to have these touchy-parts
There needs to be a squeal to this movie.
No buts. I don't care about the Murphy's Law stating that all squeals sucks. This needs to happen.
I also think it's the first disney where the mother saves the girl.
i think i'm gonna cry ...
Its really sad that Scottish Gaelic is a dying language
This movie would've been impeccable without all the bear sh*t, this song is amazing
I am soooo proud to have irish, english, and welsh blood in me and always will be. (along with other minor things) but mainly Irish, english and welsh
This song... oh my gosh I can't stop listening to it.
Grayson Antreassian me too i proud to be scottish. i dont know the language though so.... im going to learn Gaelic =)
I have Scottish relatives and I'm very proud of it! :)
I have ancestors from Scotland, this song makes me think of them.
This song always made me crying my eyes are watering 🥺
Can anyone recommend more songs like this? I always try to look for some but it's hard to find good ones like this.
How about 'Dancing and Dreaming' from How to train your dragon?
Julie fowlis, a gaelic singer, was a big part of this movie’s music i believe. She is a fantastic starting place for gaelic music. A very touching song is A Phuithrag ‘s a Phiuthar. Whole album is good, my favorites being Oran a Roin and Dh’èririch Mi Moch Madainn Cheòthar (some of her most popular).
My favourite from the soundtrack
1:43 is so cute
Finally, a Disney princess that doesn't lose her mom
* tip of a hat to my dear ancestor from Glasgow, Scotland *
It’s weird but despite this being a song between Mother and Daughter it’s always been me and my Dads song, every time it plays we both get really emotional and I really do see him in Merida’s dad “minus the ginger and Scottish and a little bit more stern” This song will always be beautiful.
im going to cry myself to sleep with happiness and sadness because I sung this song at my uncle's funeral😂😂😂😂😅😢😭😭😅😿😭😭😭😭
