I’m curious about college campuses responses to Covid restrictions. Extremist ideology and censorship is increasing in prevalence at universities and I’m wondering how professors and students are responding.
“Tolerance will reach a level that intelligent people will be banned (cancelled) from thinking so as not to offend the imbeciles” Dostoiévski Be strong Kate! You at peace with your heart and mind!
This already happened: NYC to phase out Gifted and Talented program for exactly that, but they phrased it differently where they said that the program was racist..of course.
When I lived in AZ I experienced the scariest form of racism. At a red light, a pickup truck pulled up next to me w/ several “skin head” men in the back. They were shouting aggressively yelling “nig**” get out if our country & pointing big rifles at me. Without hesitation I ran through the busy intersection & sped to my church that was near by. I immediately alerted church leadership & we called the police. This was a traumatic experience for me. It was racism. When people call everyone a racist or every offensive comment, racism, they discount experiences like mine. They undermine the violent racism Asian Americans are experiencing too. There’s a concert & strategic attack on our freedom of speech. We need to push back by boycotting these inflammatory sources of news & support independent channels like this. This is how we stop this cancel culture. Hurt their sources of income! Boycott the brands that support them!
Thank you, Karelyn Rosa, for sharing your traumatizing story -- and this important perspective you have of these current trends. Yes, the 'woke' culture has lost its way, on so many issues, and racism is being used as a tool for.... well, I can't even fully understand all is nuances. But, I do feel it's all part of a larger effort to get the masses pointing fingers at each other, creating more factions and divisions amongst ourselves, and that ultimately it only serves the 'elites' in power to exert more control over all of us, collectively. THAT slippery slope is the overarching one we should ALL be constantly aware of -- as we navigate these minefields of societal discord that keep us so engaged in a kind of hand-to-hand combat -- because that slope has become more slippery than ever in just the past few years. Heaven help us! 🌟☮💞🙏🛐 P.S. I do hope you never encounter anything so traumatic or menacing again, and that you've been able to re-orient to feeling relatively safe in the world. 💞
I'm very so sorry this happened to you. I've been stalked five times in my life and I know how traumatizing that can be. Two of the five experiences for me was racist and I'm white. Very scary. Just know that most people don't feel that way.
What a lovely, intelligent & gentle person. A real blessing to have such a person teaching our kids. It's a cruel world that can't even make room for this person's nuanced views. I hope she finds a better publisher, hopefully one with a backbone.
It's much worst than you think; I'm researching this subject recently (for a paper I'm writing), and the number of posts and videos being censored and deleted by social media platforms (including Google search) is astonishing. The information that is deleted, is the type that does NOT fit in with what these platforms want to be seen, due to conflict of commercial interest. A recent example by an Australian politician (Craig Kelly - Australian United Party leader) who held a conference with medical experts on both sides of the debate on Covid vaccines; this was taken down by UA-cam. Google executive Lucinda Longcroft admits that they mediate content that does not fall into the pro-vaccination category, particularly when it is posted by reputable research labs or professionals within the field. What is interesting is that social media platforms have no problem allowing content posted by looneys (or mentally ill individuals) with ridiculous claims like "Covid vaccine is radioactive", because these platforms actually want any anti-covid vaccine claims to look ridiculous, unfortunately as soon as the claims come from sane individuals and establishments, that content is deleted.
Stop apologising Kate for goodness sakes - never ever bend the knee - when you give into these lunatics, you are totally destroyed and that is what they want. So even this interview where you apologise makes me sad. You know you did nothing wrong and yet you are allowing them to do this. Fight Back

I’m a 73 year old now an American Naturalized citizen from Sudan. My heart is saddened to hear of the totally un necessary severe trauma this incredibly thoughtful and courageous teacher is experiencing. I frankly do not see a way out of this false humility our cultures are exhibiting . Pretending to flaunt supporting minorities… “ see how good we are by calling out racist authors”. It is too late to reclaim any list social sanity. I repeatedly found my self praying for her to heal. And some how God vindicate her. He is our only source of sanity in a world splitting in the seams. I am praying Peace & healing for you.
Fascinating interview. Just bought a copy of Kate's memoir to show support. Sending it to a dear friend of mine who is a teacher working in Central London. Awful how vicious the censorship and hatred has become in recent years.
Buying the memoir presumably shows our support for this embattled author, although it also gives money to her disgusting publisher. Hmm. What to do? I am just so shocked at how Clanchy has been mistreated. I am so very sick of "woke".
@@lafleurproductions hi, I understand your dilemma. I felt from the heart to buy one of Kate's books. I actually hadn't heard about her and the horrible situation surrounding her work before watching the video. My eldest daughter is a writer, and as I listened to Kate speaking to Freddie I could almost feel the anguish as I have an idea of the connection between an author and their work. I definitely knew, for me, to show support by buying Kate's book is more than likely because as a Christian I believe God is working in this situation and will bring good from it.
As a woman born in the UK of Caribbean origin, this interview saddened me. I have been having these types of discussions for a few years now with my friends from all backgrounds and ethnic origins and several colleagues too. Just describing people these days is seen as so offensive now due to such knee jerk reactions. This goes to show that so many people still don’t understand racism and prejudice. I was with someone at a possible disciplinary procedure who was complaining about the strong smell of food coming from a dwelling beneath her. This is how ridiculous things got - because the people that lived there were of Asian descent, my friend was accused of racism. So when I interjected and asked what if the residents were cooking Nigerian food - that was also considered racism. However when I gave the example of if the food was fish and chips and residents were British - that was not seen as racism. So clearly, people’s emotional sensitivity is skewed in terms of what is considered racism and what is just cultural differences.
Who ARE these people ? Why are they allowed to exert this bad conscience power over us? These people who obsessively see racism everywhere are surely the true racists. They evaluate everything in terms of the “racism” dogma that has taken over their minds. It’s cultish and destructive.
@@lilmoonbeam3883 And those people who are obsessed with continually fighting the racist and racism that systematically and daily destroys every area of their lives and wellbeing are the real racist too. They fight with a cultist fervour that's destructive to whole of good white British society. Wish they'd just stop.
Ok black woman of Caribbean descent, oh apologies you were born in the UK, so your not in the same boat as those other black people, glad you made that clear for us and I hope you make that clear to your other black friends and colleagues just so they're clear who their dealing with the next time you meet/talk. So one comment about the smell of ethnic food led to a near disciplinary?? Just like this woman who was so cagey in her interview my bullshit radar went right off the charts pass the 'I can't believe this can happen to me , what about my white privilege'. So your friends point was that ethnic people shouldn't cook ethnic food in their home because the smell offends her?? This would be hilariously funny if the implications underlying it were not so dangerous and racist. What you could have said to your friend, you being of Carribbean descent, was why not the next time their cooking go down, knock on their door and when they answer say excuse me I hope you don't think me rude but the smell of your cooking always rises upstairs into my flat. It smells so lovely I wondered if you could tell me what that dish is called and what do you use that makes it smell so good? Instead of a disciplinary your friend would be facing possibly making new friends, learning about tolerance and equality and maybe in danger of getting a dish of delicious food to sample from another part of the world she knew very little about 🤷🏾♂️..just saying.
To me the way these people behave is a clear sign of mental illness, where exaggerated focus on negative things have taken them on a road to paranoia where they see malevolence everywhere where there is no actual ill intent. What is bizarre is that people are listening to them, bowing to their demands and not understanding that their actions are devoid of true empathy or clear seeing. The way shame and guilt can be weaponised like this in our society to destroy peoples lives is disturbing. Very sad.
But who wants this uniformed controlled society? I might be wrong but could be a marriage of chinese authoritharian sistem , Big tech companies and corpo funds that had Made alliances and are shaping societies to fit their awfull dream of new power ?

@@iolo6933 Not wholesale. Only directed at those exhibiting those behaviours. But if you wish to lump me in with those who attack individuals whom they seem to wish to destroy, then I don't gainsay your right to your opinion.
@@pobishop235 Even those who indulge in the objectionable behaviour being discussed are not entirely "haters": they too have people whom they love and who love them for good reasons. Secondly, hate is a very powerful and useful human emotion (we should all hate things like human cruelty, fascism, murder, sex trafficking, paedophilia, and so forth), so it is inappropriate to use the term "hater" as if the feeling or exercising of hate is always wrong.
Kate, you're ability to continue to see and respect both sides of the story is amazing. I know how hard it is to stay true to one's self in a storm and try and understand, see the humanity in people that are doing us, and those we love, harm. The energy that is necessary to stay in a posture of understanding and humanity is immense. I hope that your example will shine out and help others, show others that there is another way and that it's not because others are acting in thoughtless ways that everyone has to be in the same paradigme. I wish you peace and healling from these traumatic events and that your belief in humanity is left intact.
We find ourselves in the middle ages. What a terrible time for enlightened minds, for innovative thinking, and truth. Thank you to those who keep shining their light.
Love your comment. I'm calling it the New Dark Age. It's postmodernist thinking it wants to dismantle reason and sense altogether. Just extremely regressive but they think they're the ones being progressive which is absurd.
The theological and philosophical debates of the 13th/14th centuries were much more sophisticated and nuanced than anything that happens today in universities. Time doesn’t equal intellectual or moral progress. I think one of the reasons we find ourselves in such disappointing and dark times is our assumption that we were better than our ancestors. Respect and learn from the past. Dismiss it and you become worse then then your ancestors.
This woman seems broken by this experience and that is what the disgrace is! She needs to find her righteous anger and sue the hell out of those publishers!
Robert Eastwood, I don't think she is sensitive as such she is in shock, as we all would be. She has been attacked in a disgusting way by nasty evil people and the publishers are lily livered cowards. I shall have to make sure I never buy any books from them. Litigation is always fraught, but I think she should sue them when she feels stronger, she has a lot of support from people who are astonished that she has been villified like this.
She shouldn't have apologised, this isn't about racism it's about power and once they smell weakness you're done for. Easy for me to say though, I'm sure it was a horrible experience
These shocked into consciousness lefties always bend over for the lunatic mob. Kate will whine on unherd and then fade into the shadows. She's way too soft minded.
She wasn't whining, she was explaining what happened to her. What a terrible experience, anyone would be traumatised to be so evilly treated. She isn't weak or soft she is in shock!
I'm so glad to see that she is still being published in Canada. "Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior." is the definition of racism. This is not going on in Kate's books. To speak of a feature on a person's face as beautiful or wonderous is NOT RACIST.
More people need to get on board with us. It is bullying plain and simple. And all those "virtue signalling" bullies know nothing of virtue. Virtuous people do good things regardless of who is watching. Those bullies wouldn't know virtue if it jumped up and bit them on the ass. They are accusing her of the darkness of their own hearts. It is called "projection."
@@fredhubbard7210 Exactly, we see this regarding Covid with people who have not bothered to look at the research, regarding masks for example and via the mainstream Cochrane Review, and using bullying tactics with righteous relish. All the best.
I watched this interview and felt all her pain. Kate please stop apologising it's just fuelling their madness. My question is who are these angry people? What is their goal? It certainly isn't the greater good.
They are less successful, aspiring authors, so presumably motivated by professional jealousy/envy. They may not have the talent to produce her body of work, but they can still make it impossible for her to shine.
Kate is so empathetic that she understands the people attacking her are hurting and misguided. If you asked them they would say thier goal is to "stamp out racism" but thats not what they are doing. Unfortunately the pride people gain from behaving like this is usually larger than the pride they have for anything else they have achieved in thier lives. Then when someone gets cancelled they feel powerful and righteous. Like super hero's and protectors. So emotionally misguided.
A sane conversation. Let's just say that. This is an impossible discussion atm. I am not a fan of KC's poetry, but that is neither here nor there. I am shaking my head with despair at where we are right now. I don't know whether to weep or be angry? Both.
It feels like the shapers of the “culture,” such as it is, decided it would be a good idea to steal liberally from Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” in formulating their blueprint.
@@jschiek8054 I often use that book to explain the anti-thesis of actual socialism , and funnily enough 'The Federation ' to try to explain what socialism aspires to. Obviously authoritarianism, greed and the pursuit of status along with a misconstruction of egalitarian freedom by self-righteous people lacking compassion and imagination seems to end up dominating the agenda and our current culture. As I remember 'Harrison Bergeron' managed to triumph in the end. May it be so. All the best.
Every generation Leftists gain power and then do wanton EVIL in this world.... This is OUR battle... Don't run away, stay strong and help fight it. You might have to make adjustments, move, etc., but we need you to stand against the EVIL of our day, just like past generations have stood against the evil of their day. Things will likely get worse at first, not better, but we MUST finally identify WHO the EVIL are, which is LEFTISM, and we must teach this, and we must NEVER allow Leftists to have ANY sort of power in society EVER again. To do this among other things certainly, we must however START with EDUCATION.... In all the West we MUST get mandated that there be an EQUAL # of Right and Left Educators and Administrators. And the Left won't be able to stop this happening because it will be "fair". How will this help? It will allow what's actually right and true to be taught again, instead of children being brainwashed into Leftism, both as an ideology, as well as the LIES they tell of the Right. When people are able to actually "compare" good and evil, truth and falsehood, then they can actually KNOW which is which. Most people want to embrace good and truth, but they must KNOW it in order to choose it, and equal representation will do that. Children will be able to SEE "who" is actually evil and what is false. This will also force schools to work for childrens good instead of an ideological agenda. Education is where all this evil started, so Education is the primary place we need to fix it... Everything else we need to do is important still, but this is the ROOT of the problem, so we need to create NEW ROOTS, so instead of an evil tree a good tree blooms.
Come to Egypt, there's a wonderful group of expats escaping health dictatorship. No need for woods, we need free people in this world, better alive than dead and better free than in the woods
NO PUBLISHER should EVER apologise on behalf of any writer...she should bloody sue them, especially since they now won't publish her books. why didn't they fight for her?
Why would they fight for her if she admitted what she did was wrong? She tried to be to nice and understanding which then left herself no way to fight her way out of this situation. The publishers goal is profit and the continuation of their company. People like JK Rowling fought tenaciously and didn't allow others to dictate her thought process.
@@1860mc Wow. "She admitted what she did was wrong". Let me bring you back in history, east in geography, just because that is what I know best. Maybe your homeland did not have such history up to this day. Maybe you just missed that Unit in your history class. Majority of citizens in 1935 (and up) in Soviet Russia: " Why would anybody support anyone removed from jobs, canceled from society/books burnt, kicked out from universities, disappeared ....later on... sent out to Siberia, imprisoned , shot to death, if THEY ADMITTED that they did something wrong?" You need to know this: almost EACH of those people (now known as "victims of repressions") DID sign a document that they did something wrong. Because: 1) "Give me a body, and I will fit the law to put it away" was the motto (Beria to Stalin) of the land. Eventually, laws did not need to exist. And becausr: 2) if they did not sign, their relatives were next in line to the torture (which they were anyway). Reality was simply manipulated for the millions of people to hinder their ability to see that something was wrong, and what was wrong. Then fear took charge. I think this board of publishers crumbled under fear "did we do "wrong" too, by recognizing/rewarding /awarding this author ?". I think SHE apologized, because that is the first thing a decent human being does, when someone cries "ouch", EVEN if that decent human simply stepped on someone's foot. England, STOP playing dumb when your country is clearly being taken advantage of. The escalation to extermination happens slowly, but surely. You either too young and did not learn this in school, or you are part of the new world movement, if you claim not to understand the "cry" of the original post.
@@iamthereforeistrive9392 my answer was to the original post why doesn't she sue them? My answer is she cannot she accepted that what she said was wrong. Her words “I now understand I must use my privileged position as a white middle-class gatekeeper with more awareness.” Then she wrote “I know I got many things wrong, and welcome the chance to write better, more lovingly.” What publisher is going to back her up then?
I was taken back by this interview & honestly as a person of colour , from a Caribbean background I wish Kate all the best. Clearly she's been mismanaged and treated unfairly. Society is to sensitive.
How did we get from: " I didn't enjoy that book, I disagreed with some aspects and would not follow that author in future" TO " I will undertake to cancel the author and generally ruin their life"?
Probably because she said that all the racist quotes were made up - only for it to be found out that every racist term quoted was actually in her book. She used racist language, denied it, asked for the reviews to be taken down, then played the victim when we found out the quotes were real. Sometimes you need to put your hands up, admit you're wrong, and LISTEN to the people complaining. Instead, she runs to an interview with a man that clearly believes anything she says and will not challenge her.
@@notabiologist9865 Why are you talking about a "Woke Inquisition"? Let's just talk about what she said. Why would she claim that "None of these terms are in my book - it's all made up"? There's a reason they avoid reading the worst quotes in this interview, there is a reason she denied ever saying them, and there's a reason she's removing them from the book. This interview perfectly encapsulates the victim mentality - just look at the title.
Woa, that's an interesting angle in all this. And now those most people have a voice, and another set, heretofore seemingly intelligent (publishers, platform operators, university administrators), listen to their lustful cries for the purification and simplification of reality, in the game of empathy puffery. Ayn Rand said of racism that it's the desire for "automatic knowledge." This desire blooms again, ironically from a branch that was so instrumental in the old battle against racism (academia). They fool their own monitoring of the darkness within, with the name of the cause and with big-worded, complex, but ultimately not complex enough, dissections of the anatomy of injustice. Beneath the mask lies their thirst for causing effect. It keeps getting quenched, so more plays get thrown on the menu. Them belly never full.
“We are all human”. The perfect summation of a complex topic of people creating division and competing to be the “best person” in a dystopic virtue signalling colosseum in which gladiators destroy reputations instead of fighting to the death. What’s really needed is open mindedness and empathy.
This is horrible! My heart aches for you dear Kate watching it all the way in Moscow! Sending you good vibes! Please practice self-care and don't engage with those cruel idiots in any way!

Lol, there are three types of people. Sheep. Sheep Dogs. Wolves. This will never change. In the 1930s people stood around with newspapers and magazines....
I think this interview is extremely valuable and I absolutely didn't receive it as an apology. Yes, Kate Clanchy acknowledged moments of her own weakness and as well as the weakness and pain in others, but she also spoke her truth and stood behind it. This is exactly what the world needs. When we respond to no compassion without compassion the cycle continues. This is how it is broken, even if this (showing compassion while also being true to ourselves) is less satisfying to the ego which will always prefer to view the world in "black and white" terms. Truth is messy, reality is messy. The current state of the world is a result of many things, including some that we all have subscribed to.
I work with disadvantaged kids. I'm acutely aware that if a student repeats something I have said to the wrong person, I could lose my job. It's a very vulnerable position to be in. But if you are going to be honest and real with kids, you take those risks.
You are just the most gracious and patient person ever. I think you will easily find another publisher. I must say that whenever I hear someone is getting canceled, I know I must go check them out! What a heartbreaking interview. Thank you for doing it. Kate's mistreatment must be brought to the forefront. It's absolutely appalling what people get away with these days.
Very good closing remarks. It seems that quite often in these situations corporations immediately try to protect their bottomline and sacrifice employee or client.
My thoughts exactly. Even before the full reveal, as I heard her talk and explained her story I shook my head and out loud said “you were too naive to trust them!”
“I know I got many things wrong, and welcome the chance to write better, more lovingly.” She wrote honestly about what she saw and worked with, and around. When she said she would write better and more lovingly what she really meant is she will write what is required of her. She is then no longer the author of her own thoughts and experiences, just a puppet of the people she seeks to appease. The more people like her in positions of privilege and prominence that are ostracised openly in society the better in the long run. Her cohorts in similar positions, can then ponder their freedom and autonomy. Then maybe just maybe one by one start to question their blind support for this modern form of mental subjugation.
There is a serious and a glaring contradiction in your comment. You have decried "mental subjugation" of authors while at the same time saying that authors should be "ostracized openly".
@@1860mc You seem to be espousing that if more authors are wrongly vilified, even ostracised, and possibly even driven to suicidal ideation, then other authors will slowly begin to make a stand against the vilification and ostracisation. I don't think the end justifies such awful means, such seriously damaging suffering as that to which Kate Clancy has been subjected.
@@iolo6933 the ends justifying the means are irrelevant. This is happening to different people in all types of positions in society regardless of my opinion or yours. This is not a choice about should it be happening, it absolutely won't stop now until society stops it. The only reason we are discussing this is because Kate Clancy, J K Rowling and others like them are in influential positions. This was my point originally when influential people are targeted by people who want them to only think what they think, then freedom of expression is slowly being destroyed. Kate apologised and made herself look guilty of actually doing something wrong. I stated in the original post, she did this to stop people attacking her, it made no difference other than to make the attacks look justified. JK Rowling stood her ground, fought and continues to fight for her right to her opinion and freedom of expression.
@@1860mc I don't think we should require anyone to undergo such trauma that they are plunged into suicidal ideation just because their suffering MAY cause others to come to their defence or others MAY stop persecuting such people. It is not entirely true that we are only discussing this matter "because Kate Clancy, J K Rowling and others like them are in influential positions", because there have been reports in the media of many people who are NOT in influential positions being bullied by others (who are also not in influential positions), for example teenagers who are shamed and bullied so that they too mentally suffer so badly that they do such things as harming themselves, or even committing suicide. I agree with you that seeking to appease bullies by opening dialogue with them, during which the bullied person shows a willingness to alter their position, can be unwise and can escalate the bullying. Regarding JK Rowling, I don't believe that she has exactly "stood her ground, fought and continues to fight for her right to her opinion and freedom of expression". Instead she has been so horrifically bullied and ostracised (in the UK, USA, and other western countries ) that it seems to me she has chosen to simply go quiet. I believe I have been following her case quite closely, but if in recent months she has made some gallant stand against her wrongful "cancellation" then please let me know. I have noted that Pink News has been leading a constant and a vitriolic campaign against JKR, and that followers of Pink News on Facebook behave like an unthinking mob. Every time I have contradicted such followers' opinions against JKR, or about other things, the brutal responses which I have received have been alarming. I would like to think that each time someone new is cancelled by bullying parties for insisting on stating the truth, the likes of Germaine Greer, JKR, Kate Clancy, Kathleen Stock, Lionel Shriver, and others at the very least immediately communicate with them and assist them through the experience.
The oxymoron is that I watch this on social media but it is social media that is the evil. You are too sweet to those who condemn you. Wish this lady the very best. Another great interview Freddie and unherd! Pretty soon none of us will be heard but I dont think it is realized.
The multiculturalism our leaders said they wanted to create, for 'strength', was actually nothing of the sort, it was craved for the division it could create among the demos. Kate isn't the victim of some organic social phenomenon, she's the victim of a highly coordinated attack against liberal democracy using the flaws within liberal democracy. Ask the ADL and Tony Blair (literally their Special Advisor For Global Affairs ... basically their international technician) how useful the MultiCULTi on steroids is for the dismantling of liberal democracies and transition towards technocracy. Very useful. Realize that Kate's experience is simply part of a calculated demolition of an ordered social fabric. Billionaires everywhere agree, this type of chaos is quite necessary for the consolidation process.

I watched this conversation 2 weeks ago and ordered the book “Some kids I Taught ..” straight away to get to know Kate Clanchy better - what a great book! What a treat! Initially I read as much as I could, now I go back to it before sleep and savour it.. I also keep asking myself during the day: what have I done for others, in comparison, despite working in community pharmacy and working for local people etc.. Kate is so good, so thoughtful and intelligent, so caring, I don’t think that can be denied or cancelled in any way, no matter how hard some may try. I love and support her 👍🏻
That is a veery interesting and touching interview. I have not read anything by Clanchy (but I'll check t if it is in my library before it gets pulped) but from what I hear the mistakes she made were 1) apologising 2) accept to re-write. This is terribly shocking. I haven't read the book but am definitely going to do so, to make an informed decision on this. My initial impression is this lady is a very compassionate and informed individual. The fact that none of the individuals featured in this book have actually complained is a big red flag for me.

@@Besseloff I think this teacher was a part of beginning the obsession with immigrants cultures, called multi-culturalism, to the exclusion and detriment of English/British culture. English and British culture stopped being taught and celebrated in schools. Multiculturalism helped cause a shameful stigma begin to eat away at the English and British children by making exotic cultures the “in” thing, and the English/British culture a ‘negative’ thing that did not bear cultivating! It became unacceptable to love ones’s own culture during this time, as it was seen as undermining all the different cultures flooding into Britain. Now with the English culture about to be overcome for good with all kinds of different cultures set to be predominant, the political culture has spoken up to make sure English culture is silenced for good! These many different cultures are now dominant, because the public school teachers gave these cultures preference instead of teaching and imparting English/British culture and values. Our culture only continues to exist because we pass it down to our children, and impart the wisdom and knowledge from one generation to the next.
I just read 'The Human Stain'. A novel for the late 90's that was based in part on these issues. I wonder if the author would be surprised at how far this dissolution has progressed.
Shame on Picador! The best writers have characters (or a voice-of-God-observing-character), who have strong opinions on other characters. It’s what good writing is all about- Think Dickens, Mark Twain, Jane Austen. If you can’t write about what you see from your or a different point of view- what is the point of writing?
19:13 Ok this message is for everyone. One day in primary school, as I came in, I was met by my friend who reported to me that there was a dead rat in the back school yard. So the thing to do was to report it to the principal so that she could get someone to deal with it. My friend was too intimidated to go to the principal by herself so I agreed (or thought I agreed) to go with her. What eventually happened was that while she remained peeping in at the door, I was the one who went in before the principal's desk to report the dead rat. But when the principal questioned me on where exactly the rat was, I could not answer because I didn't actually see the rat myself. I was only relaying what my friend told me, and she was quite happy to let me flounder before the principal even though I continually gesticulated to her to come in and, as an actual witness, to back me up. Given that I clearly didn't know what I was talking about, the principal dismissed me from her office. I promptly grabbed my friend and got her to show me the rat. it was very big and also beginning to smell. Having verified the information myself, I promptly returned to the principal's office to report the rat, that I had seen it myself, and I was able to articulate exactly where in the schoolyard that it was. For some reason the principal seemed surprised? aggravated? 😂 to see me back so soon, but I was taken seriously and she went out to check and got the school handyman to dispose of it. The lesson that I learned that day, is that even though a trusted friend tells me something, that I must always make the effort to try to double check things myself, especially if I am going to take action on it - or risk looking like a fool. And if for some reason I cannot verify something myself, I qualify my statements by preambling with, "I understand that ..." or "Such and such person told me that ..." Regretfully, the lesson I learned in primary school had not been learned by quite a lot of people and all they are doing is making themselves look like fools - because when under questioning, none of these individuals will be able to account for their behaviour and will discover that the friends they were relying on for information, abandoning them at the door. lol.

The harshest conflicts often occur within sects. This is a battle between different generations of anti-racists. As with gender, mention of difference, especially physical difference, is becoming anathema.
Sending supportive healing to you Kate and also to your students and colleagues as you help each other through this. Stay strong and stay your creative self. It's clear that you're a strong and wise individual. All the best to you and your students.

At around 10, I had a picture I drew published in a book. Half a century later it’s something I remain proud of. In my mind, it ranks with my university degrees and career achievements. “Deadening” is the exactly the word for all this. A culture of death.
An educator loses her life's work for doing a good job in encouraging her students to embrace their culture, difference and become writers. Explore their experiences - relate them to others. That is racism? Her students have a good grasp on what is fair and reasonable - apparently this not enough for cancel culture.
@@downtime86stars17 Aptly stated. I grew up among absolutists who failed to fathom how disgracefully cruel & abusive such an elitist sentiment was to the very dignity of another human being, who is their kindred, designed by an architect far beyond anyone's paygrade.

An aversion to acknowledging other cultures, be they in one's own country or in another country, is a sign of insecurity. Indeed, multiculturalism should be celebrated as much as one celebrates visiting a foreign land on a holiday. The existence of a foreign culture of non-British origin in the UK should not be an issue just as much the existence of a Welsh or Scottish or English culture within the UK shouldn't be.
Thank you Kate, Sadly I had not heard about you or your writing but read about your situation and ordered your cancelled books. I am now looking forward to reading them. When I saw the UnHerd article I had to watch. You come across as a lovely person and to get your pupils poems published a really fantastic teacher.
I think she's far too kind to her foes. As with other cases of online bullying, this is not about people acting with good intentions who somehow, ironically, arrive at cruelty in their results. It's about people who act with cruelty and a lust for the sensation of power from the get-go. Near the end, she speaks of hoping to 'heal the divisions' on 'the liberal left', but -- again -- I don't think this is about unfortunate 'divisions,' but about the exposure of an authoritarian current that is interested in power, not 'healing.'
I ordered the book last week, quite oblivious to the minor war being waged around it and the victim, Kate Clanchy. And despite its purported withdrawal from the market, I received it and began reading quite greedily. It was only yestarday that I discovered quite by chance that the publishers had officially withdrawn the title and had more or less declared Ms Clanchy persona non grata. And reading what some people have written about the book and its author, I can only assume that either they have not read the book at all, or that they have no empathy whatever with young people, especially the underprivileged and excluded with whom Professor Clanchy has spent so much time and to whom she has devoted so much love. Ironically, I only discovered the existence of the hornets' nest which had been stirred up because I was looking for a contact address where I could send a message expressing my admiration for the beautiful book which Professor Clanchy had written ...
a few quotes from Ernest Becker “The greatest cause of evil included all human motives in one giant paradox. Good and bad were so inextricably mixed that we couldn’t make them out; bad seemed to lead to good, and good motives led to bad. The paradox is that evil comes from man’s urge to heroic victory over evil.” “If everyone lives roughly the same lies about the same thing, there is no one to call them liars. They jointly establish their own sanity and themselves normal.” “Man cannot endure his own littleness unless he can translate it into meaningfulness on the largest possible level.” “Man is literally split in two: he has an awareness of his own splendid uniqueness in that he sticks out of nature with a towering majesty, and yet he goes back into the ground a few feet in order blindly and dumbly to rot and disappear forever.” “Better guilt than the terrible burden of freedom and responsibility.”

The stranglehold on public discourse is tightening ever tighter. It's disgusting.
It seems to have the tacit approval of your "Conservative" (🤔) government. I'm utterly astonished what is happening to western democracies ☘🇮🇪

@@lafleurproductions hi, I understand your dilemma. I felt from the heart to buy one of Kate's books. I actually hadn't heard about her and the horrible situation surrounding her work before watching the video.

Have you read her book?
To me the way these people behave is a clear sign of mental illness, where exaggerated focus on negative things have taken them on a road to paranoia where they see malevolence everywhere where there is no actual ill intent. What is bizarre is that people are listening to them, bowing to their demands and not understanding that their actions are devoid of true empathy or clear seeing. The way shame and guilt can be weaponised like this in our society to destroy peoples lives is disturbing. Very sad.

Let me bring you back in history, east in geography, just because that is what I know best. Maybe your homeland did not have such history up to this day. Maybe you just missed that Unit in your history class.
Majority of citizens in 1935 (and up) in Soviet Russia: " Why would anybody support anyone removed from jobs, canceled from society/books burnt, kicked out from universities, disappeared ....later on... sent out to Siberia, imprisoned , shot to death, if THEY ADMITTED that they did something wrong?"
You need to know this: almost EACH of those people (now known as "victims of repressions") DID sign a document that they did something wrong.

On the contrary society is so insensitive

This interview perfectly encapsulates the victim mentality - just look at the title.
it's too deep and complicated for most people when you are honest
Well done for another deeply human conversation.
Kate, what a lovely woman. My prayers and best wishes go to you!
I feel very sorry that Kate has been vilified for this ridiculous situation.
She actually did something productive and meaningful for her students. Her book deals with race far better than any of the unintelligible rhetoric going about in the online spaces that sought to cancel her. I can guarantee none of them have done anything for the "minorities" they claim to stand for.

I just bought Kate Clanchy's books and I hope many people are doing the same. I'm looking forward to reading it.
Thank You so much Freddie ; I am sure Kate will come through this stronger , more resilient and an even better writer . How fickle and cruel some can be ....... and the innocent suffer so terribly because of it .
“Shadow play”. What a brilliant expression. We have to get people away from their screens and back into the real world.
Kate, just ordered your book, and look forward to reading it. Bless you with peace.
Thank you Freddy and Ms Clanchy for this enlightening conversation between two intelligent people.
Stay strong Kate! Your publishers are cowards. They should be sued for slander and forced to apologise to you. Shame on Picador!!!
You are just the most gracious and patient person ever. I think you will easily find another publisher. I must say that whenever I hear someone is getting canceled, I know I must go check them out! I have not been disappointed, and I may never have come across you otherwise. Someday I think you might be able to see how this is simultaneously both the worst and best thing to happen to you. Hang in there -- sometimes I still hear birds in the early morning... ♡
You are so strong 💪 the most important take ways for me is a) your students love 💕 and support you. Their futures were not harmed and they are able to prosper. B) You have been persistent. You keep writing ✍️ and teaching as you said “ you always show up” . sometimes the best people are spit on and treated in the worst way, but as they say it’s not so much what happens to you that defines you, it’s how you handle the situation. You proved yourself today and you’d be hard pressed to see anyone do it better. I wish you well but I’m not worried about you! I’m not the best writer but that’s why we need people like you🥰
What a heartbreaking interview.
Thank you for doing it.
Kate's mistreatment must be brought to the forefront. It's absolutely appalling what people get away with these days.
Anyone who is surprised by this hasn't been paying attention. (And I agree with Kate Clanchy that it is 'malign'.)
Very good closing remarks. It seems that quite often in these situations corporations immediately try to protect their bottomline and sacrifice employee or client.
If someone is more offended than the person that is suppose to be offended then that person needs to check their "privilege".
If Ms Clarchy were as versed in history as in poetry, she wouldn't have been so surprised when the trap was sprung.
My thoughts exactly. Even before the full reveal, as I heard her talk and explained her story I shook my head and out loud said “you were too naive to trust them!”
“I know I got many things wrong, and welcome the chance to write better, more lovingly.”
She wrote honestly about what she saw and worked with, and around.
@@iolo6933 ostracised for saying what they really feel. Mentally subjugated into saying what they are being pressured to say to appease other people.

And if for some reason I cannot verify something myself, I qualify my statements by preambling with, "I understand that ..." or "Such and such person told me that ..."
Regretfully, the lesson I learned in primary school had not been learned by quite a lot of people and all they are doing is making themselves look like fools - because when under questioning, none of these individuals will be able to account for their behaviour and will discover that the friends they were relying on for information, abandoning them at the door. lol.

The harshest conflicts often occur within sects. This is a battle between different generations of anti-racists. As with gender, mention of difference, especially physical difference, is becoming anathema.
The people who criticized her were all much less successful writers, so I suspect that professional jealously has a lot to do with it.

An educator loses her life's work for doing a good job in encouraging her students to embrace their culture, difference and become writers. Explore their experiences - relate them to others. That is racism? Her students have a good grasp on what is fair and reasonable - apparently this not enough for cancel culture.

She reminds me of my favourite teacher in school. A way of getting kids to listen through her gentle and good-humoured approach.
This woman has absolutely nothing to apologize for. She should tell the snowflakes to go to hell in my opinion.

“Man cannot endure his own littleness unless he can translate it into meaningfulness on the largest possible level.”
“Man is literally split in two: he has an awareness of his own splendid uniqueness in that he sticks out of nature with a towering majesty, and yet he goes back into the ground a few feet in order blindly and dumbly to rot and disappear forever.”
