I have one of these bad boys a familiar . during our first session ( joining a campaign in progress so I'm level 6 ) I cast dragons breath on the little guy so he could fight from my dragonborns head. he ended the first combat with a total of 2 water elemental kills ( highest kill count of the session ) earned a title from the ships captain , and stole a dagger from a table no one was using . he was a instant hit for the DM and the table group . so picture a 1 foot tall mushroom guy with a big hat to protect him from the sun , ridding around on a dragonborns head.

I absolutely love the idea of myconids, and I think my fascination with them started with the Truffle in Terraria. I didn't know D&D had such creatures until after I started making a homebrew version for the gurps system so whoops
for my upcoming arc, I'm having my party deal with a collective of Myconids that have had a divine entity accidentally instill their Sovereign with a powerful sense of individuality, thus throwing their entire social order and ecosystem into disarray and turning their whole cave into what is essentially an eternally bumpin night club lit by mushroom strobelights and filled with weird organic house music. it's gonna be fuuuuun!
I played a myconid wizard for a oneshot a while ago. Her familiar was a big spider, the size of a hand, which rode around on top of her head, and which she treated like a pet. Unfortunately, she couldn’t talk to it like people do to pets, since it’s intelligence score was too low to understand her, and unlike with actual speech, you can’t use telepathy to talk to things that can’t understand you. That led to a weird situation when the spider got hurt, and she had to ask somebody else to comfort her spider for her, because she couldn’t talk to it since it couldn’t understand her, but of course it wouldn’t be able to understand anyone else either, since it has the intelligence of a spider, and she knew that, but she just felt bad about it being hurt and was being irrational in the same way all pet owners are when they talk to their pets. Nobody agreed to comfort the spider.
She was really great at avoiding combat. Like, two guards approached us, and I used the hallucination spores ability on one of the guards (technically normal myconids shouldn’t have that, but it was a oneshot, and one person was straight up playing sans from undertale, and my brother was playing an inkling from splatoon. Nobody really cared.) and I cast “sleep” on the other. That meant that not only did we avoid combat, but when guard’s superiors saw them, one asleep and the other tripping balls, they thought they had been doing drugs, so they got in trouble instead of us.
frustratingly, they occupy the same monster category as plants in DnD. it makes more sense when you consider that they generally share most of the same strengths, weaknesses, and thematic elements
Myconids can feel the pain of every stuffed or sautéed mushroom you've ever eaten. If I meet my end at the hands of the Myconid species it will have been worth it for the lifetime of flavour wonderment mushrooms have added to my life.
A single spore lands, finds nourishment in decay and attains maturity.. In turn it exhales a cloud of life, a thousand spores land... so progresses Juffo-Wup.
I came back to this video because your Basically series helped create my story for a campaign. Also I love these mushroom boys so much that I made Drow love them as well and trade with them peacefully in most cities. Also Keptolo's followers adore them cause shrooms. Like, who can hurt these nice little fellas!?

Dude i love them they are so chill In Out of the Abyss it goes into there work a bit more, each circle is dedicated to one thing, like hunting, exploring, farming, etc. So basically they form circles to handle tasks in and around there colonies

Myconids are classified as plants under D&D's monster classification, though. Probably because they function more or less like the other various "walking plant" monsters.
Gotta love any video that plays thatched villagers as background music. The only problem is, is that I need to watch the video all over again and actually listen this time.

Fungus can live anywhere as long as they have water and wastes to digest. So they can totally live outside of the underdark.
The bigger problem is their innate pacifism. Sure, you can make a pacifist character, but you probably are not going to have a lot of fun doing so
