  • 3 Years in and a successful crop of Mint last year this year I'm hoping to try something different but overall the bin is still in good shape after another winter of being outside!

While the Mint came in really strong I want to try and get other things to grow this year! I'll update later on the progress!

Sounds like Keter make a mighty fine deer feeder!

I hope you enjoy it! I have multiple family members that purchased these after they saw how well mine held up!

Deer off isn't going to work. You'll need to build a net cage to keep deer out.

Thanks for the video. I am planning to get a couple. What do you recommend to use to fill them up with? What types of potting soil do you recommend? Should I put a gravel bottom layer?
    Thanks

I only added a all natural soil from the big box store with some of my own worm castings. Granted I wasn't very happy with the material as it had lots of wood chips that seemed a bit big in it.
I didn't add any gravel or anything like that. As far as what soil to use it really depends on what you are trying to grow but I would highly recommend adding some organic amendments such as worm castings, compost, or leaf mold to help the biological aspect of the planter.

This Easy Grow Bed has quite little holes in the inner 'upper' plateau. Can the bed work well as 'self-watering' system (do plants get enough water?), or do plants have to be watered directly on top instead of via the bottom (water would be poured in via the indicator hole)?

I found the plants have zero issues getting water and the indicator works pretty well. Most plants have grown really well even with little watering when water is in the bottom.
Two issues are flooding when we get torrential rain and the drain is closed but this is easily fixed when you see the indicator. Second is deer eating all the food.

I wondered about this as well. The holes are small and there aren't many of them. It's a good system to keep soil out of the water reservoir, not such a good system to move water from the reservoir to the soil. If the water level is just a half inch lower than the dividing board then there's no contact between soil and water. In a wet area, like this seems to be, that won't be a problem, but if you were somewhere more arid it would. I can see the watering indicator being handy to show when you need to add water (though even then there could still be water in the bottom and the top half bone dry). I messed around with some self-watering systems using storage boxes and capillary matting that worked well last year (too well to be honest, the soil was drowned because I had the matting "spidering" all through the soil in the planters, when I just needed to keep the bottom of the soil damp. A few strips of capillary matting on top of the dividing board and dipping into the water underneath should do a good job.
Of course once established some plants will find a way into the water reservoir on their own.

@@WorldComposting Are you noticing root material draining out of the tap? Maybe need to pull it out entirely to check. I just don't see how the reservoir works unless the roots are growing into it. Do you get dry spells where you are? Maybe there's just enough soil mass in the container overall to conserve moisture between rain. I've just finished putting two together and am seriously thinking about that capillary matting idea, because now is the time to do it, before I fill them with... I have two of them; let the experiment begin.

    Deer eat onion?!?

I'm not sure if they ate it or just ripped it out while poking around it wasn't eaten to the ground like most other plants are that they like and I did find pieces around the bin.
