      @@polyMATHY_Luke A strange vid but why not. Dealing with books is a nice thing. I'm completely bibliophillic xD
      I just use the "normal" commercial bookmarks and make them on a side. This side is the side of the book where I stopped reading. If I'm getting that distracted to even forget to put in the book mark it must be a serious event. Like, the house is burning or something xD

    It reminds me of the old circular medieval bookmarks for Bibles with 4 columns of text. You could rotate it to read "prima, secunda, etc" so you knew which column you were reading. You could also slide them up and down on the string so you knew where on the page you were vertically.

    As a fellow bookmark maker, though, I need inch and a half wide bookmarks for notes, can't resist. Especially grammar texts, "pg. 77, preps w/dative", "Inna and its sisters, 144, ff." Seeing all line starts on a page used to bother me, too, until the Second Vatican Council took "Intentional Concealment of Text, in part or completely, by other materials" off the list of mortal sins. A great time (and soul) saver! Thanks for your continued intense polymathy.

    I’ve never given bookmarks much thought, but when reading anything except simple narrative books, I summarize everything I read as I feel I understand and remember it better. It definitely makes reading more tedious some times but it has definitely helped my comprehension immensely. Thanks for the great videos!

    I've always used a similar technique, but rather than marking a bookmark, I just place it so that the front is facing the page I left off on. I kind of want to make a bookmark with an adjustable arrow so I can also point to the line or paragraph I left off on, which would be convenient.

    • @Flubbydubbydoodoo
      @Flubbydubbydoodoo 3 роки тому +2

      I do the same. As for paragraphs, if I don’t finish at the end of the chapter, I will either read until I get to the start of the first new para on the page, or until I get to the last paragraph on the page. If it’s the last para, I turn the bookmark upside-down and face it towards that page, with the bookmark poking out the bottom of the page. 😀 I reject claims this is proof of OCD.😀

    I use post-its (the small kind), myself, and stick the bookmark to the page I'm on. They're just big enough to peek over the top, and small enough to be out of the way in the margin. Those peeking out the side are semi-permanent, those peeking out the top are temporary so I can keep my place.

    This was great, Luke! I am going to have to steal this idea :-) I typically use paper scraps and put one or two words of the subject on the top so I know what was in the book that I liked. I am a subject indexer though by trade so perhaps this is why I do that. lol. I hadn't thought of using a more permanent marker (15 years- wow!) pointing to left or right. Honestly, starting when I was in middle school, I just decided "I'll remember the page every time" and funnily enough it actually worked for me, it just involved me taking a second to look at page number and associate it with the book in my head. Now if you're browsing through several of them at once, your technique might actually come in handy, unfortunately I now mostly work with digital material ^^'

    Have you considered having an "ex libris"?
    It's an old costume that's mostly lost because personal libraries are on the rare side nowadays (many people sell or exchange their books after a while. What I consider almost a sin!).

    I found this so hilarious!! lately I use a pack of mini post-it notes as a (thick) bookmark because instead of writing in a book (which I was raised not to do by my librarian mom) i tear off a strip of post it (actually, light yellow mini size "Highland self stick notes") and mark the edge of the page where I want to make a note. I can also write on the post-its. I can use wider or narrower strips of post-it. i see in your "Polis" book you have post its too. Using something as thick as a post it note pad is far from ideal, but since I actually use those notes constantly with the type of research reading I am doing, it works for me.

    This is pure madness, I can't stand it! I've just watched a video of hyperpolyglot Professor Alexander Arguelles demonstrating one of his daily language learning habits and I don't believe in the methodism of you guys. One dot, two dots? I'm too messy for intelligence.
